Today my daughter and I both got our Elk. We started out early and were done by about 10:00 am. Not that we are that good of hunters. We have been hunting every day we could since opening day on November 5th.

We got them at the same time. I was very impressed once again with her .257 Roberts. her Elk dropped right where it stood at a ranged 224 yards. she hit it in the neck and it went into the off side shoulder. Dead before it hit the ground. I was also very impressed with her shooting.

This was the first time we had two down at the same time. Dang, thats alot of work.

Oh, By the way, She is 14 weeks pregnant. I have another Grand baby on the way.

That's awesome Winger. Not that good of hunters????? I beg to differ. Looks to me that you both know what you're doing out there. Taking two elk at the same time and being with family. You guys rock!

Thanks guys. I will pass this on to Tiffani.

This has been a great season. We have got to spend alot of time together. just the two of us. I didn't get to hunt with my son as much, but a little. Work gets in the way of fun way too much.

Congradulations guys on your Grand kids. It is a GRAND epidemic.

I got mine with a .270 winchester, Weatherby vanguard. It was 280 yards. I wasn't as calm as Tiffani was. They were standing together and Tiffani always gets first shot. She shot. I flinched and lost the elk in my scope. When I found it again, I aimed and pulled the trigger. Dang, Safety still on. I took the safety off and by that time the elk was about 250 yards. I got a neck shot, but it didn't stop her immediatly. she kept going and at 280 I got a shoulder shot and she dropped.

I guess if I didn't have buck feaver I wouldn't love hunting as much as I do.

I can send you a gallon of our city water. The way I see it their must be something in it cause they seem to be reproducing with great regularity around these parts.

Wing, Congrats on a couple of nice elk. I"ve never been elk hunting but I've butchered a lot of beef. Can't imagine doing two in one day under field conditions. How close could you get to these with some type of vehicle?  RD

Thanks Guys.

Rocky, It was about 500 yards to the pickup. Not too bad. we have had alot worse.

We quarterd them and I can carry 1 quarter over my shoulder. She carried the backstraps and our guns etc. The thing is, after 8 trips it was a long way.

The best part was, that will probably be the last time I will have the opportunity to spend a whole day with Tiffani, just the 2 of us, until next hunting season. We took full advantage of it.

That's got to be a chore. In WI we can't 1/4 our whitetails, remove any parts etc. Field dressing is the only thing we can do. Now WT are a lot smaller than elk but where I hunt in the SW corner of the state there are tall broad ridges separated by deep valleys. The hills in between can be almost too steep to climb without the use of hands add the fact that some of the areas we hunt is so thick that you literally crawl through wildlife tunnels in the brush on your hands and knees. Dragging a wide racked 225 pound+ buck uphill through this mess is not for the weak of constitution or heart. Never the less, 8 trips carrying 1/4s! You've got to be in better shape than this grandpa. Hopefully I'll get to test that out next weekend though. RD

Good job. There is noting better than elk steaks on the

with the grand kids.

Packing elk/moose....time for the 8 wheel Argo.

Posted By: Wing master
Date Posted: 16 November 2010 at 14:51

I think we would quit hunting elk if we couldn't quarter it in the field. I have only loaded 2 elk whole. It is not very common, at least for us, to see one close to a road.

An Argo would be really cool for retreiving down game, but I don't know what I would do with it the rest of the year. I have been thinking of getting a 4 wheeler. The only problem is if you have one while hunting you automaticly are branded as someone who hot rods around tearing up the forrest. Even if it only leaves the back of the pickup to get downed game.

It is a shame that the 4 wheelers have given hunting a bad name.  they are only allowed on private land here.  I've always hunted the larger forests and public areas (just more remote).

Especially as one gets older it is tough.  My hunting group averages 70, and with open heart surgery I'm the best of shape!!!

Every year I pass on deer because of the drag.  Just starting to hunt closer to roads; lots of deer there but I miss the deeper interior.

I often thought a law that would let you use a gas powered puller (like a snowblower or roto-tiller without the blower/tines to just pull out critters would be great).

as has been said, randy, double congratulations! a double-down on elk with a good hunting buddy is a great thing in itself, but another wingmaster on the way is spectacular!

Randy. With my quad in the off season, Barb and i just like to go for lots of rides in the mountains and also do some scouting in the summer. I wouldn't even worry what people think about you owning a 4 wheeler. As long as you know what you use it for is all that matters. It's not like the trails we use them on are nature trails that have been built by some bird watching organization. I'm thinking about buying a Rhino when i get my truck paid off. Barb thinks they look too much like a golf cart though . I love Argos too but the only thing i don't like about them is the amount of clearance they have unless they've worked on that problem like they had with the original orange ones that used to be advertised in Outdoor Life years ago.

use an 8 wheel model inAlaska.  unbeatable.  like a junior tank.  Even goes in streams and deep rivers (slow, espically up stream) with its self propelled tires.  It is a sealed unit, no water inside.  Skid steers like a tank also.

My only problem is the cost is high, and down in the lower 48 where I hunt I can't use any motorized vehicle at all.

Cost and multiple uses are why I thought a quad would be better for me.

I really don't care what anyone thinks, I try to do the right thing.

In the Bighorn mountains near me they have 4 wheeler trails. Lots of them. I think that would be fun in the summer. These trails have a width restriction to keep jeeps and pickups off the trails. I don't know if an Argo would fit.

first off...congrats WM on your family hunt......kudos to your daughter too........my daughter shot a WTbuck when my grandson (now 10) was "packed in water" too....I think the gunshot and recoil set him up to be a better hunter....

....elk...bone 'em out and there is less wt to carry out.....just peel the hide off where they fall & go to it.....no gutting required....I only shot 1 bull elk and this is how I did it but I helped with others.

RD...read your 2010 Deer regs....you can now 1/4 your deer and bring it out...see regs for details..gotta leave the head attached tho....first time this year.

I have been looking back and thinking about packing out elk and deer. We spent several days hunting, and when we finally got our elk the hunt was coming to an end. When we were field dressing and packing elk parts we didn't have to be quiet or sneak around hills and trees. We talked laughed and I can't say for her but I really enjoyed being with her.

I don't think I want to trade any of that for a 4 wheeler and a little less work. Its all part of the adventure and I am very lucky to have had the opportunity to spend that last, and probably the best few hours of our hunt with Tiffani.

Yep, I don't think I want to mess that up by changing anything.

well put there WM......father/daughter times are to be cherished.......one of my best times with my daughter was when we canoed the Missiouri River from near Fort Benton  for 3 days down river to a landing whose name I forgot.  That was in 2001. It was a great trip for both of us.  When we launched the river had whitecaps on it from the east and we had to "walk" the canoe for most of the day....towing/pushing it cuz we  couldn't paddle against the wind/waves.  That made for a real bonding beginning.............

Just like your canoe trip, it is not so bad looking back. When you are looking ahead at where you are going to drag your canoe it looks alot worse.
