GWs are great dogs. But I'd pick the breed that best works for your specific type of hunting. My hunting dogs have been beagles, vizsla, Brittany, labs all specific breeds; except the vizsla which was promoted as a versatility breed, he only hunted birds. The Brit was also a good bird dog but not a great retriever. I did hunt pheasants over a GW. he hunted good but was a very strong willed male, and would snap. |

I have German Shorthairs. I agree with Bear. I use dogs to hunt upland birds so I have upland bird dogs. I would snap a picture of heidi and post it, but she is laying on the couch licking her butt right now. I will wait for a better photo opportunity. Just read that this is the FIRST dog. Just my 2 cents.....they take a lot of work to train. MORE than you think. Get some training books and read NOW. So you can start right in. That thing about old dogs, new tricks is TRUE. Lots of work to train as a good hunter, easy to love the critter.

I was probably spoiled because Rocky was a natural pointing lab. First thing in the morning he had a little tendancy to work too far ahead but always settled down and kept a steady pace back and forth between two of us when pheasant hunting. Never duck hunted him but he'd wear out my buddies brittanies, water spanials and springers in the fields of Iowa. Still raren to go at mid afternoon while they were looking for the shade of the truck. I'm sure that a GSH or other big running pointer or setter would have given him a run for his money. Sounds like Rocky was one heck of a dog. It would have been interesting to see him on ducks and geese. A pointing lab would be the best of both worlds. I've been blessed with several fantastic dogs..... For upland birds the best was a GWP.....awesome hound.....it was stolen from me..... I've owned two great chocolate pointing labs.....and they easily do double duty as a waterfowl dog!!!! I had a buddy with a fantastic Golden retriever..... Here's my advice.....for waterfowl it's Labrador all the way!!!! For double duty is still Labrador..... But for pure upland hunting it's Draathar.....This is a German registry GWP.....because not all GWPs are created equal!!!! |

The wire hair has long been known in it's homeland as a very versatile huntin' dog in all fields,,,but as they seem to be vogue here in the U.S.,they are pricey ------------- If,,in the end all I have is my honor......it will be enough! |

As breeds get pricey or popular, lots of inbreeding occurs, and the quality goes own fast. Try to buy from a reliable source. Papers don't always truely represent the actual bloodline!!

I've spent over 37yrs with Irish Setters and Golden Retrievers and never looked back...great dogs......usually one of each all the times.....GR I have now is 10+ & the IS now is 3. She will be my last dog I believe If I outlive her and for sure if I don't.

Although I don't own one, german short hairs have ALWAYS got my attention. I have two basenjis that live with me and though they are supposed to be sight hunters, they don't impress me for anything but their over activeness. I walk them both, at the same time, and it's a real physical thing. I even have the chain knuckle head collars that are suppoesd to make them stop pulling, and they really enjoy having their necks jagged, well I suppose they do, they never stopped dragging me............Kingpin ------------- There are times when a normal man must, spit in his hands, hoist the black flag, and begin slitting throats. |

been thinkin' on a Britany,,,don't want a big dog,,,but I want a good all around dog,,,ain't a water fowler on purpose,,,have jumped a few while after other stuff,,,but livin' in Louiusiana kinda means waterfowlin',,,though I will do it from boats,so I need a dog that wont flip a small duck-boat,size-wise. ------------- If,,in the end all I have is my honor......it will be enough! |

All around dogs I go with Labradors everytime,upland game,waterfowl,bloodtrailing wounded deer. Licking my nasty feet,great with the grand youngin's,shreding my hunting boots when they are puppy's.They hunt till they drop and spoil ya when they aren't.LOL

Lets see I raise labs for years and hunted with them for grouse/pheasants and ducks. I was lucky enough to own a Field champ Brit. Brits shed, if a house dog. Labs are better with kids. Neither is a negative, both are just great. Brit nos is 5 times better than a lab. Labs are 5x more disciplined than a Brit. My lab was , "Spookie" my Brit was , would you believe "Brit'. Loved them both, miss them both.
PS I'm back from 3 days hunting deer in NY.

Collies...lots of hair in the house. They are susceptible to brain tumors and some eye problems, possible to having been breed for narrow thin sculls. Not a long lived breed. their hair is course (not shiny like an Irish Setter) and get some briers when running afield. Of course if she gets one you almost have to name it lassie I've hunted birds over English cockers, and at least the ones I've hunted with were fine bird dogs, here in the east. Doubt they would be as wide ranging as a pointer. Brittany still sounds like the winner to me. Especially if your wife would consider a collie, 'cause the indoor brit does shed, plenty, thin under coat hair.
