I'm refinishing and 870 pump shotgun, about 20+ years old.

Go everything off, except the tub inside the forearm.  I got the spanner nut, tapered off from the front, but the thin tube inside the wood is TIGHT.

tried light tapping, no movement.   I think the wood has with moisture over the years gripped the tube extra tight.  any thoughts appreciated.

Start the nut back on the slide tube about three turns, then take something a little oversized of the barrel channel and squeeze it by HAND into the groove. Not as hard as you can mind you. It should spread the forearm enough to allow you to tap the nut with a large dowel and free the slide tube. Try it and get back to me...................................Kingpin

never thought to try and spread the barrel channel..slightly.  It really has a hard grip in that carrier.  I'll try it.

thanks

worked good KP.  i used a short length of pip and a padded vise.  Since the operation my hand strength is 8 pounds (increased from 4#), so I can't even open a twist off beer bottle.

thanks for the tip.

Now to refinish before the sportingclays charity event next Fri.

I would like to volunteer to go to the sporting clays event and open your beer bottles for you. Course, It would cost you a couple of beers. I am thinking about a 1 for you 1 for me ratio.

I always liked the old 3 stooges counting lines.

"one for you---one for me"

"two for you--one, two for me"

"three for you --one, two, three for me"

etc

Glad it worked for you Bear. If it had split, I would have backed you up with a new one.............................Kingpin

Bear, I forgot to mention, when you assemble it, make sure that it's straight where the bars come out of the rear, otherwise, it will bind some when you operate it......................Kingpin

thanks KP for the "backup"...it came out great.  refinished quik with only 3 coats of tung oil.  but it is dry clean assembled for fridays shoot.

I was able to re-align it using the old bearing marks on the tube.

thanks..great advise.
