I posted a while back about a model 27-2 that I found at a local shop. But I can't find where I posted it.

I decided to wait until after the gun show this weekend to get serious about the model 27. I went to the gun show and didn't find anything that I couldnt live without. I did see a S&W model 17 K-22 that I really wanted, but I couldn't get together with the seller on the price.

So I went back to look at the 27 again. I think it is in better condition than I thought at first. It only has about 1/8th of an inch of wear at the muzzle fron a holster. The rest of the gun looks great. Only a small ring around the cylinder.

The thing I dont like is, It has a set of Pacmayer grips. I would rather have the originals. And some dumbass painted the front sight ramp with what looks like finger nail polish. Any ideas how thremove the polish without damaging the blueing?

It has a 5 inch barrel, Is pinned and recessed, and has the knurled top strap.

All this for $475.00

I think I am going to like this one. I will post a range report as soon as the wind quits blowing. No wait, This is Wyoming. I will have to shoot in the wind.

Still patiently waiting to find that model 57.

screaming deal on that 27... nice work!

when i re-grip a smith, i usually scour the gun show circuit. lots and lots of smith and colt grips at the shows, and i like the older wood grips better than the rubber versions so many guns have now. might also order a grip from hogue - they have some pretty nice looking grips available.

can't help ya on the front sight...

congrats on the iron - sounds like you got a great one!

Wing;

I think you got a very good buy.  Very good!  Particularly with the P&R & knurled rear sight.

I know that acetone, aka fingernail polish remover, will take the stuff off, but I don't know what it'll do to the blue.  Might want to invest a call to S&W on that one.

congrats on the "find"....I found the factory grips on the M27 was always to large for my smallish hand at least those they called the Gongalcoalves (?) or some such type of name...try to find a company called "CDNN" on the net.....they have a tremendous amount of handgun grips for sale all the time and many of them are orginal manufacturers. I used to have one of their catalogs, will look to see if still in the catalog pile.  If so will get you better address.

Congrats you will love it.

That muzzle wear just means it wasn't a closet Lady.  the owner liked it enough to take it out and carry/shoot it.

Gun shows have lots of standard S&W grips in like new, as many replace them for lots of reasons.  In the 44 I like the Pacmeyer or U. Mikes rubber grips.  They stick to your hand and of course absorb some of the 44mag shock.

enjoy.

I respectfully suggest that you use the same thing that you use on your toes, when you want to change the color of your polish on your toes.

OK, seriously, nail polish remover, or you should have half a dozen bore cleaners that should take it off.

Wing paints his toes? LOL. Congrats on the 27, you bought a world standard. I LOVE N frames. I hope I don't have to keep my head down on those comments. Polish remover or acetone will remove the nail polish............................Kingpin

If you want to make a quick $20 I'd take it off your hands...

To clarify; $495 for the gun with the polish. $10 bucks more for a pedicure.

A man's pedicure is around $45.00 and includes polish. Since the polish will make you walk with a swish I skip it. Being diabetic I was told not to cut my own nails, and the Pedicure comes with a GREAT massage. Leaves you with HAPPY FEET!

Well Wing, how does it shoot? Ought to shoot like a dream and very accurate. Although I don't recommend it, it will shoot hot loads a lot more forgiving than the K or L frame and is still very manageable to shoot..........................Kingpin

I have only had the chance to get it out and shoot it one time.

I need to practice more, but it shoots great. I can put 6 shots into about 5 inches at 25 yards offhand. I can assure you the gun will do better.

One thing that surprised me was. I tried 38's and 357's. It shot 357's better and I didn't notice much difference in recoil. Not much at all. On one cylinder I alternated 38's and 357's and I could tell a difference but not much.

I could tell the difference in my K frame alot more. and it shoots 38's better.

Might just be the factory ammo I have been using while I have been gathering brass.

I will try to post a picture soon.

LOL, I will probably take hits for saying this, but I always believed that putting .38's in a .357 is a lot like putting regular gas in a racecar. I LOVE .357's and have a few. Not much gives me as much satisfaction as shooting a .357 full tilt. It just feels so right.......................................Kingpin

I think a lot of people with a .357 Mag don't like the "full throttle" loads especially if they have a smaller gun......also some (the non reloaders for sure) may buy the less expensive .38Spl  "plinking" rounds just to get more trigger time for the $ spent.

I tried 38's looking for accuracy. Guess I am not going to get minute of angle accuracy out of a 5 inch barrel. I would like to get as close as possible.

That big ole N-frame will not pass a whole lotta recoil on to your hand.  It's real good at soakin' the recoil up in it's own not inconsiderable mass.

For target loads, try pushin' some 148 grain hollow base wadcutters along at about 900 fps.  Experiment with any of the faster powders, you'll be almost sure to find one that's both accurate & clean.

5 " can be an advantage, less sight wiggle.  I like the 158 SW cast at 100 fps.
