Seems like the 20 gauge is taken over for the 16. And the 12ga 3 1/2 inch has eaten the 10 ga. |

I hear the 16 is making a come back......I have one, with "mule ears" a sxs.....my son has one too, also a sxs but hammerless, a modern one from the late 1950's.

The 16 does appear to be making a comeback. At least 2 companies are making wads that weren't at this time last year, Browning has several O/U models in 16 gauge now too. These guys will argue that it's on the way back. Tons of interest on this site. I really hope not. I really like the 16 guage. I use one alot for Pheasants. Lighter gun, Handles real good. and will knock a pheasant down as good as a 12 guage. Course I also use a 20 a couple of times a year and it knocks them down too. You can still buy 16 guage shells, but their are way more options for a 12 or 20. I don't have any experience with a 10 guage. The more I think about it, it does seem like they might be going away.... I hope not. Well, there was a day when the 16 was built on a special 16 ga frame. So it handled better. Wut the lst one i say was on a 12 frame so it was just heavier? I hope they don't come back as there are lots of great bargain in 16, pumps, and SxS. People think power so the 16 doesn't have a 3" chambering and it is hundreds of dollars less. My used 16 ga model 12 was $300 less than the same gun in 12...go figure? |

As long as we can still buy ammo, I guess it dosn't matter cause I like old guns anyway. The 16 I use is a model 31 Remington. I think it was built on it's own frame. I also have one in a 20. I can shoot them better than anything else I have. I have been looking for one in a 12 guage to round out my collection. The ones I have found have either been in rough shape or priced way out of line. The Model 31 has a really smooth action and is as reliable as a model 870. One of the things I like, is you almost never see anyone carrying one in the field.
