Thoughts
I had the opportunity to take our new pastor on his first mule deer hunt. While living in Arkansas he had harvested a whitetail doe with his bow, but had never shot a buck. On the way up to the timber, we saw several does. On the way down the mountain pastor hollered, "stop, there's a big buck!" Unfortunately, the 6x7 monster was on private property within 20 yards from public land. He stood there broadside 25 yards from the jeep with 5 does and a fork horn buck. Pastor asked, "should I shoot?" I said, "let's wait him out and see if he goes onto public land." Unfortunately, he went the wrong way. Later that day, pastor shot a nice 4x3 at 250 yards with his Savage 250/3000. The high fives were flying; pastor was very excited about his first buck. When pastor told several people about the 6x7 muley, most of them said that they would have shot the buck. Pastor and I agreed that he did the right thing by respecting private property. (Tom L.)

Action Point
As Christians we need to be like the Thessalonian Church. They modeled their lives after Paul and his companions and were true imitators of Christ. Being "above reproach" does not give the enemy a foothold and straightens our witness to believers and non-believers.


Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
Study your maps and ask landowners about their property boundaries before hunting an area. Trespass laws in some states are very strict and a violation could cost a lot of money.

John 6:60-66
On hearing it, many of his disciples said, "This is a hard teaching. Who can accept it?" Aware that his disciples were grumbling about this, Jesus said to them, "Does this offend you? What if you see the Son of Man ascend to where he was before! The Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you are spirit and they are life. Yet there are some of you who do not believe." For Jesus had known from the beginning which of them did not believe and who would betray him. He went on to say, "This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless the Father has enabled him." From this time many of his disciples turned back and no longer followed him. (NIV)

Thoughts
With a careful watch, I followed my 6 year old son as he slowly carved and cut his way down the snow covered ski run. Although it was his first time skiing he was doing well so I decided to ski well ahead - in an attempt to capture the moment on film. As I looked back, I saw him fall. Although he was not hurt, his skis were crossed and he needed help getting up. As I struggling back up that slope, I watched skiers quickly and effortlessly pour down past me. It was easy to go down, but climbing back up proved difficult. I visualized Jesus climbing to a high vantage point to speak to the crowd that day. When those followers heard His charge they considered it too difficult grasp and many turned their backs on Him - descending down and away. They made the decision to choose flesh over faith. Action Point
Many times in our lives it seems as though we are struggling with an uphill climb- continue climbing. The crowd (and this world) beckons us to follow them - usually downhill. Continue to place your faith in the Cross - it provides the strength and stamina needed to scale life's mountains.


Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
Regardless of how often you snow ski, wear a properly fitted helmet. Not only will it keep you safe, but it is also the warmest thing you can wear.

today's devotional rings true for me - i see it many times at home, at work and in my own life. it often seems easy to take the easiest path, but in the end choosing a more difficult, yet more rewarding path, is something to be valued.

Give ear to my words, O Lord, consider my sighing. Listen to my cry for help, my King and my God, for to you I pray. Morning by morning, O Lord, you hear my voice; morning by morning I lay my requests before you and wait in expectation. (NIV)

Thoughts
While my husband is out hunting and my 6 year old and I are anxiously awaiting his return to camp, we often pass the time by going on adventures into the woods to collect firewood. We then begin the process of building a fire. Our first step is to prepare a place to build that is safe and cleared of debris. Next, we stack rocks to make a ring and then we build our nest of small fuzzy pieces of wood to light. The larger pieces are then added until we have a nice cozy fire. This is a great activity because it takes time and makes the day without Dad go even faster. (Sara S.)

Action Point
In the Old Testament we often read of the building of an altar and the burning of sacrifice to God. At times the fire was lit by man and at other times fire from heaven came down and consumed the sacrifice. Our scripture today says, "morning by morning I lay my requests before you and wait in expectation." The Hebrew words used in this psalm describe the building of an altar, laying out requests as you would lay out pieces of wood, and the wait in expectation as looking up to heaven for the fire to consume the sacrifice, our prayers. God is waiting to hear from you. Are you expecting to hear from Him? Look up, your answer is coming!


Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
When leaving camp be sure to drown out your fire and stir the water deeply into the pit. Then scatter the rocks from your fire ring. This returns your camp site to a place that looks natural and beautiful.

Thoughts
I often reference to the adage, "They don't care how much you know, until they know how much you care!" I believe it is true of all relationships. This, "philosophy" has served me well as a coach in a variety of sports at various levels of competition, as a youth leader, as a pastor, and as a father. The only way for anyone to really know we care, is for us to give of ourselves to them. This is so true of our closest relationships especially in the areas of time and attention. And, it is these relationships that speak loudest of our closeness to God, or not. (Randy E.)

Action Point
One of my regrets in life is the many times I failed to model Christ for my children and, instead, exasperated them to anger and frustration. Most of the time I was angry myself when I did so. I have talked with each of our children about this and have asked him or her for forgiveness. I did so in hope of bettering my relationship with them and that they will in turn do a better job with their own children. Our oldest, Ben, is certainly doing so. How about you my friend?


Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
If you want your children and grandchildren to share and enjoy your interests and hobbies, start investing your time in them when they are learning to walk. As they grow older, learn what they like to do and do those things with them as well. This is the way to share your life with them. Then when you are old, they will do the same with you. Young or old, it is never too late to start!

Thoughts
We were driving the fire truck down a main arterial street when two women frantically waved us down. "You have to do something; they will never survive," the first woman exclaimed. "They are going to die," yelled the second woman. Now I began to think maybe there was some danger. Was there someone trapped in a burning house? Were people trapped in a catastrophic car accident? They led us around the corner of a house were we found two newborn javelinas nestled against the wall. They were right; they probably would not survive in this location. Not that there was a shortage of green lawns and fresh petunias to root up, but the combination of their poor eyesight and the latte drinking "got to get my Christmas shopping list finished" drivers were no match for these young pups. So with mama javelina circling the area and the fire truck blocking all lanes of the busy street, we led the two youngsters back to a wash located several blocks away where they had probably came from. Eventually with the squeals of the two once content and now very irritated pups, mama crossed the road and disappeared into the wash after them. (Brett M.)

Action Point
Moses wasn't sure about the Lord instructing him to lead the Israelites out of Egypt. He felt inadequate as a leader and questioned whether the Israelites would even believe that God had told him to lead them. Compounding his doubt were the Israelites preferring the enslaved comfort of Egypt over the adventure of an uncertain future.

Has God called you to lead? He calls many of us in many different ways. Some of us He calls to teach Sunday School at church or to serve the homeless at a soup kitchen. Others He calls to create a devotional website and others to be big brothers or big sisters. Regardless of where God calls you, be open and accepting to His leading. Pray, read God's word, and seek out trusted Christian influences in your life like a pastor for guidance. God has a plan for your life, seek Him out, and find out what it is. A good resource is Rick Warren's A Purpose Driven Life.


Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
Javelina have a musk scent gland that many people worry will taint their meat. It requires no special care. Just skin your harvest as usual and the scent gland will peel off with the hide.

1 Samuel 17:45
David said to the Philistine, "You come against me with a sword, with a spear, and with a javelin. But I come against you in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. (NKJV)

Thoughts
For 40 mornings and evenings, the 9 foot 9 inch Philistine named Goliath stood and taunted the Israelites, asking for a man worthy to fight him. No one would step up and take the challenge. It took a young boy from Israel, who as a sheepherder had fought off bears and lions that attacked his flock, to defeat the Philistine behemoth. It was the greatest upset of all time. (Bink G.)

Action Point
Most of us, like the Israelites, would run and hide if we were called on to fight a giant. Oh what problems we would solve and anxiety we would save if we took the same approach as David, "I come against you in the name of the Lord of Hosts." There is strength in the name of the Lord. There is power in the name of the Lord. There hope in the name of the Lord. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.


Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
A few years ago, it became politically incorrect to term one of the largest groupers in the ocean as a Jewfish; so the fish was renamed the Goliath grouper. Ironically, so not to offend the Jews, officials renamed the fish to give homage to the Philistine who persecuted them. Grouper is excellent tablefare. If you ever travel to Florida, look on the menu for a crunchy grouper sandwich with lots of tartar sauce. The tip is - try you'll like it.

Joshua 4:21-24
He said to the Israelites, "In the future when your descendants ask their fathers, 'What do these stones mean?' tell them, 'Israel crossed the Jordan on dry ground.' For the LORD your God dried up the Jordan before you until you had crossed over. The LORD your God did to the Jordan just what he had done to the Red Sea when he dried it up before us until we had crossed over. He did this so that all the peoples of the earth might know that the hand of the LORD is powerful and so that you might always fear the LORD your God." (NIV)

Thoughts
My wife's passions are her horses and trail riding. In the past 38 years we have ridden many back country trails and followed cairns, small piles of rock set to mark the trail. Today the Forest Service uses small blue diamonds tacked to trees along the trail. The older method of marking with stones is still used, especially on unmapped trails or the older less traveled trails. Recently I found cairns over two feet high, stacked by an energetic soul. They still all serve the same purpose, the way. (Byron S.)

Action Point
Rock pillars or cairns date back to Moses' crossing the Red Sea during the Exodus. Rock pillars, thought to be set up by King Solomon, mark the crossing site. They what God did for His people. Another analogy that I thought of is stones of remembrance are to point and show us the way. I have discovered is that every page of the Bible, both Old and New Testaments, point to Jesus Christ, The Way.

Genesis 5 holds the prophetic stones that reflect genealogy from Adam to Noah which spell out the Gospel:

Adam=Man
Seth=Appointed
Enosh=Mortal
Cainan=Sorrow
Mahalalel=The Blessed God
Jared=Shall Come Down
Enoch=Teaching
Methuselah=His Death Shall Bring
Lamech=The Despairing
Noah=Comfort

In sentence form it reads: Man (has) Appointed Mortal Sorrow; (but) The Blessed God Shall come down Teaching, (and) His death shall bring The Despairing comfort.

Take time to read and study your Bible, you will be amazed at the stones of membrance that you will find. I guarantee it will keep you on the trail.


Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
Some back country trails wash out over the years making it hard to find the way. Invest in a good map and compass or GPS and more importantly, know how to use them.

I'm trying to read the bible in 90 days right now. ( not gonna make it but trying) I have just read the accounts of many of these men. Great men and some failors along the way. Thier faith is astounding in some of the cases. Every time I read of Abram a fresh. It amazes me! Oh to have that kind of commitment in my own life! Well I'm just a work in progress.

Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God's grace in its various forms. If anyone speaks, he should do it as one speaking the very words of God. If anyone serves, he should do it with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen. (NIV)

Thoughts
As a Hunter Education instructor I am privileged to help many people with a variety of instructional needs. There's the youngster that is taking the class in order to hunt big game in Arizona, or maybe the teenager that wants to learn how to be safer in the field. There are always students that are there because Mom or Dad has made the class a requirement for shooting and/or hunting. Many times there's the Dad that is there with his child, but who all ready "knows it all" and is just there to be supportive of his child. Without exception, Dad always comes around and is a star student by the end of the class! On several occasions, I've had moms that have never fired a gun and let me know that they are a little afraid of the guns. They are the most fun. By the end of the field day where they are required to shoot, I have to pry the gun out of their hands!

None of these prepared me for a recent conversation with a student. A father and two of his children were in my class. This individual shared with me that he had done OK with the field day and hadn't had any negative repercussions from shooting and smelling the gunpowder. A little puzzled, I asked him what was up. He then proceeded to inform me that he had witnessed his brother's suicide. They were alone at a shooting range with seemingly nothing wrong when his brother ended it all. Needless to say, I was set back on my heels by this story. I cannot begin to imagine what this man has gone through because of this event in his life. The student indicated how grateful he was for the class and my helping him get through his difficult memories. His children were both very supportive and were looking forward to shooting and hunting with their father. Needless to say, this instantly became one of my most cherished moments in Hunter Ed. To be a part of his story was a privilege beyond words. I was humbled to be in God's place for those few weeks and, unbeknownst to me, to be able to help one of His children. (Cliff S.)

Action Point
All believers have been given gifts by God that we are to use in service to Him. I've been given the gift of speaking (practiced through many years of training) and being able to communicate with others. Be it sharing about hunting, firearm safety, or the grace of God, it is important that I use that gift for God's glory. You see, teaching Hunter Ed is a sideline, what I'm really there to do is to help others and to share God's love with them. Please pray for my classes, and also pray that God will make me sensitive daily to whomever He brings into my life and to whatever help they may be needing. It is vitally important that we use the gifts God has given us even when we aren't aware of someone else's circumstances. You never know when God has brought you into someone's life to encourage them in their walk with Him or to lead them into a personal relationship with Jesus. I would ask also that you would pray for this friend and brother in Christ. He's a good guy and is doing better every day. And, if you need help with struggles in your life, find a friend or relative that is a believer and let them share with you the love of Christ. Jesus is there for you, especially in tough times. Don't wait, give your life to Jesus today and experience His love and forgiveness in your life.


Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
Pay attention to the people in your hunting camp. There may be someone there that needs help with a firearm, or some coaching on hunting techniques, a word of encouragement, or maybe something far more important. Share what you have learned over the years, especially with the youngsters

  This one hits home for me,lots of folks are hurting in this world but how many times do we just shut up,listen or look for signs of folks in need.

  Had a guy at work that ended it all just about two weeks ago. Always said hi but on the quite side always looked grumpy so folks didn't talk with him much. Retired in Dec.,ended his life and eternity in Jan.. Not that I could have done anything but we never know do we?

this one hits me too, mike. i can think of more than one occasion in my life when i have been in a place at a time that i could never have brought together on my own, and then found out that it was to help someone or experience something that either did some real good for someone else or taught me an important lesson. i've also been on the receiving end of that as well. these experiences have taught me that everything happens for a reason, even if we never find out what that reason is.

Thoughts
I will never forget the day that I harvested my first deer. I was twelve years old. My dad had placed me on a stand at the edge of a pine thicket. As I watched his orange vest disappear through the woods towards his stand, I caught movement out of the corner of my eye. A small spike buck was following my dad through the woods. He stayed well behind my dad so to remain undetected, but was craning his neck to see what that was walking through his woods. He never saw my sweaty hands holding my grandfather's old twelve gauge that severed his quiet surveillance. (Brian H.)

Action Point
Sometimes we flirt with things that we shouldn't. We tiptoe quietly behind sin thinking that we are far enough behind that we couldn't possibly be in any danger. It's at those times that we are hit squarely in the side by the flaming arrows of Satan's offense. We must flee those things that could even potentially ensnare us. A wise man once stated, "Sin will cost more than you want to pay, it will take you farther than you want to go, and it will keep you longer than you want to stay." Flee it! Don't stick around to dip your toe in the waters of sin. Be vigilant, watch for the roaring lion so that you won't be devoured, flee sin, and pursue Godliness.


Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
If you're a hunter that uses dogs such as Beagles or Walker hounds, keep some one liter soda bottles filled with water. When you're in the field, keep those bottles in your game bag. Sometimes the dogs need a drink and a puddle is nowhere to be found.

Thoughts
Most of my adult life has been spent in desert environs. In a land where there is no water. This was not always the case. I was born and raised in Pennsylvania where there is an abundance of water. There were so many good fishing spots that your biggest problem was deciding which lake or stream or river to go to! I can remember so vividly the first trip back home after living for many years in the desert. Green! You just wanted to try and drink in all the green! It felt so good to the eyes just to see all that luscious green. Much of the Middle East and of course Israel is a dry and weary land where there is no water. David was thoroughly familiar with these barren spaces and how they can zap the soul right out of you. He had no air conditioning, no refrigerator to go get a cold glass of water from, and no ice cubes! He really understood thirst when he said, "my soul thirsts for you, my flesh yearns for you". Action Point
Have you ever felt the way David did? How you almost feel physically weak and sick because of the need for God in your life? You feel like you are lost in a desert with no water, wandering aimlessly, and trying to find something to drink before you expire. The sun is beating down on you with no relief, no shade, and no shelter. I have been in the literal desert extremely hot and thirsty. I have also been in that dry and weary spiritual place. In the latter case, it is always because I have left the safety of the Lord, never because He has left me. Run after the Lord! Drink Him in like a glass of refreshing water. Taste and see that He is good!

  
Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
When doing your dishes while out camping or hunting, add a few drops of Clorox to your rinse water. This will kill most of the parasites that cause "the runs". After washing, just soak your dishes in the rinse water, dry, and put away. No one ever wants that kind of a problem and especially not on an outdoor outing!

Outdoorsmen are fascinated by knives. Part of the appeal of a knife is its simplicity. A knife calls out to the minimalist in a man. Never has there been a low tech tool with higher fascination. It's so simple it can be made from just one material, handle and blade; the archetype of unity. Yet it's obvious which end to grab and which is the business end. Part of our interest in knives is their beauty. Beauty in appearance, functionality, and allure of creativity.

The word of God is all these things. Its message is simple, beautiful, and creative. When we subject ourselves to God's word we find a simple, penetrating message which points to a beautiful Savior whose creative power transforms lives. (Steve S.)

Thoughts
One of our favorite wintertime activities is cross country skiing as a family. If you stay inside for too long in the winter months, a person can go buggy. Cross country provides us a cheap outlet to get out of the house and get a breath of fresh air. For us to do this, my wife and I have had to teach each of the kids how to ski. Cross country isn't hard once you get a little experience under your belt, but those first few lessons reinforce how easy it is to slip and fall. All it takes is being off balance a little bit and down you go. The important part of this learning curve is, "How do I get back up?" So a quick lesson ensues getting your skis parallel while you are laying down on your side, and then using your poles to help push oneself back up. It's a simple lesson, but if you don't get back up, you won't ever reach your destination. (Dave M.)

Action Point
Spiritually, everyone falls down. The key is to get back up. God designed and created you for a life of purpose. The enemy, Satan, wants to keep you down and beat up. That way you are ineffective for the kingdom of God. Sin isn't good, but when you fall, go straight to God, ask for forgiveness, and get back up. God's forgiveness is quick and complete - accept it and learn from your mistake(s).


Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
For those of you who live in a snowy climate, buy a roof rake to get the snow off your rooftops. Don't go up on your roof to shovel it off - you're inviting trouble. You do have to get the snow off though or you are looking at too much weight on the roof and potential leak problems with the ice backing up.

Thoughts
I finished setting up my things in my tree stand just before the woods awakened to the daylight. I grunted using my grunt call, rattled my rattle bag, and only had to wait a few seconds. He seemed to just materialize out of the dimly lit woods. He walked in my direction seeking out my calling. I could make out his rack as he moved closer. He proudly wore four points on his narrow antlers. As far as he was concerned, he was the biggest deer in the woods. At this point, he was. I enjoyed watching this deer as he couldn't find the other deer and as he walked off. I chose to let him walk away. I told a teenager about this encounter and he shared, "I wouldn't have let him walk." The joy of hunting is that a trophy is an individual's choice. ((Dennis W.)

Action Point
We have many choices in life. We face simple choices like how you like your coffee, to more difficult choices like which house to buy. In our spiritual life, we face choices every day. Will we feed our sinful desires or will we follow the righteousness of God? Joshua said, "As for me and my house, we will follow the Lord."

Of all the hunting paraphernalia you could carry into the woods, take a grunt call. Calls are small and simple to use. When you see a deer, you have a natural sound to hopefully turn that deer toward you.

Thoughts
Outdoorsmen know the importance of a properly equipped camp. If we have good equipment and the right equipment, we will have a great experience. But if we have bad equipment or the wrong equipment, we can be miserable and frustrated the entire the time. Camp with confidence with your equipment by testing before you use it, correcting that which is faulty, and practicing good camp safety and hygiene. (Don A. H.)

Action Point
Our Christian walk also needs to be well equipped. That comes by spending time in God's Word, knowing that it is inspired by the Holy Spirit, and believing that it is perfect, holy, and true. With it, we can establish truth, correct those who depart from the faith, and instruct each other in righteous and holy ways. This is how we are completely prepared for the good work we must accomplish for the kingdom.


Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
Carry extra batteries for your camera, flashlight, or other electronic devices, but don't carry the batteries loose. You can make small, neat carriers out of duct tape, perfectly sized to the number and style of extra batteries that you need. The one I made holds three AAA batteries with a flap that folds over and tucks in like an envelope. I got this idea from watching boys make duct tape wallets at a boy's camp. Some of the boys I know still carry their wallets, even a couple of years later!

Thoughts
Practice! Practice! Practice! Practice makes perfect. Or more accurately said, "proper practice makes perfect". If we practice with the wrong equipment or with the wrong mechanics, then our practice will only decrease our proficiency. Archery is a fast growing sport and is being embraced by more and more hunters. Additional skills and disciplines are required of the archery hunter. Two are to wait on the proper shot that will ensure a humane kill and to practice before the season so you are ready, confident, and proficient when the shot presents. (Jackie M.)

Action Point
Archery gives us a perfect picture to understand sin. Sin is missing God's bulls eye of holiness. No mere human can ever do enough or practice enough to hit that mark. God's bulls eye is absolute holiness, complete perfection. But there is a Champion who has hit that mark. His name is Jesus. He completed every requirement that God had established. He fulfilled the whole law of God, hitting the mark dead center! He did it perfectly. He died on the Cross to pay the sin penalty of death for all humans. That payment is available to all who will by faith receive Him and His work for their own sin. His resurrection proves that God accepted His work upon the cross. He paid the price so every person might be saved or forgiven of their sin. Have you by faith accepted this gift of forgiveness and eternal life? If not, right now put your faith in Jesus Christ. Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
Make sure your bow is sighted in properly. Carrying it in a hard shell case can protect the sights. After travel, it is always advised to confirm the accuracy of your weapon before hunting. Trips in vehicles, poor handlers, and bumps in the road can knock the best sight out of adjustment.

Thoughts
Yesterday while goose hunting the morning started off with a beautiful sunrise. The sky was full of pink, blue, and white colors. God was painting the skies to proclaim the work of his hands. Maybe you fall in the same trap that I do. That is you sometimes forget that the beauty of the hunt or the fishing trip and the people you are with is the adventure. You end up concentrating on the harvest. I do not like when I do that because on a less than successful day, you rob yourself of the personal experience you should have enjoyed with the other people involved. The outdoors is still about the experience and the individuals involved. This devotional is to tell you that if this has happened to you, you are not alone. You will have good days and bad days in the field and on the water. What you learn, experience, and who you spend that time with is the important thing. (Jim C.)

Action Point
As I sit here today thinking over yesterday, I try to focus on what I learned and not why I missed some easy shots. I also remember the 3 guys I shared the blind with and how much fun they were to get to know. All of them were great sportsmen with a pure enthusiasm for the sport of goose hunting. It truly was a good day and I pray that the Lord lets me enjoy a lot more of them.


Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
On extremely windy days, the geese can be really weary once they get close to the decoys. Total concealment and single honks can get some of those birds to come in. Also be aware of birds flying only several feet off the ground, they can come in fast and silent trying to avoid the wind. Be watchful and ready!

When I first read this verse, I was taken back to a memorable hike in Yellowstone Park. As my wife and I stood under Yellowstone Falls, we were totally unable to hear each other talk due to the thundering of the water crashing onto the rocks below. God gives us things like this in nature, which are actually written in scripture, so we might have some perspective of His glory. His glory is far greater than we can even begin to imagine! God created us with the ability to enjoy nature's magnificent blessings. Seek out God's glory in the things you see in nature and you will discover that He is truly an awesome God

Thoughts

Trust, absolute, complete, unconditional trust. This kind of trust is what you must have in your guide or you're kind of crazy to go into the wilderness with him. How about the vehicle you drive, the lifted four- wheel drive that can go anywhere until it gets stuck or loses a driveline or a fan belt twenty miles off road. How about that airplane that you climb in and soar into the clouds, will that prop keep turning? You rock climbers, now that's really crazy. To lean back on a rope from a gazillion feet up a bluff where if the rope breaks we'll have to pick you up with a stick and a spoon, if we can find that much of you! Trust. It is an absolute essential to everything we do in the outdoors or in our day-to-day life, if you think about it. Yes, that crazy driver really ran that red light. Yes, I trust my spouse while I'm gone hunting or fishing. Yes, I trust my hunting buddy to not shoot me while hiking up that mountain. (Cliff S.)

Action Point

God tells us that we can trust in Him and that He will raise us from the dead, if we believe in Jesus. Think about this with me. Jesus had to die to pay the penalty for our sins; that's an absolute fact. But, God also raised Jesus from the dead so that we can have faith that He will do the same for us. By God raising His Son, Jesus, from the dead, He was doing more than just telling us. He was showing us that we could have confidence in Him that He'll do the same for us. God doesn't just ask us to have faith in Him. By raising Jesus from the dead, He gives us absolute, unconditional proof that we can trust Him to raise us to an eternity with Him.


Sportsmen's Tip of the Day

Check your gear and vehicle prior to every trip to the mountains. Be sure all batteries are fresh and that your hunting equipment is in good working order. Check the oil, water, tires, and battery in your truck and don't forget to check the fan belt. Replace any item that is questionable. And, don't trust your life to machines (like a GPS). They're great tools, but be a good woodsman. Your machine might break and leave you stranded if you're not paying attention to where you are.

Thoughts
Who hasn't fallen asleep hunting? Many of us have stayed up too late the night before a big hunt or been worn out fighting the elements and succumbed to fatigue. I recall my son's recent deer hunt from a ground blind. Facing away from him, I could see the deer coming. Under my breath I hissed, "deer," "deeeeer," "DEEEEER!" Overcoming a case of the nods, he snapped to attention with only half his wits about him. By the time the gun was up, there was snow on the scope and one disoriented teenager! Thankfully the deer never got close enough.

When Jesus addressed the disciples' physical grogginess, he was speaking to a much deeper spiritual grogginess. "The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak" is often our excuse for failure. It should be a warning against it. In life, we can't afford to give into temptation, for we are the hunted. Peter warned,"Be sober-minded, be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion seeking someone to devour" 1 Peter 5:8 (ESV). (Matt F)

Action Point
What dangerous spiritual grogginess could Jesus address in your life? "The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak." Get with another Christian and begin to hold yourself accountable to each other. Don't allow weakness to be an excuse for failure. Stay alert!

Make sure you're prepared mentally and physically for a big hunt. Get the proper sleep the night before and bring the proper gear to help you fight the elements.

One day as Jesus was walking along the shore of the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers-Simon, also called Peter, and Andrew- throwing a net into the water, for they fished for a living. Jesus called out to them, "Come, follow me, and I will show you how to fish for people!" (NLT)

Thoughts
With the Silver Salmon running and the pristine afternoon conditions, my friends and I enjoyed treasured, prime Alaskan fishing. We were wading along the river while casting toward the opposite bank as the fish passed through. The borrowed open faced reel gave one friend a struggle. Another friend and I approached to lend a helping hand. The struggling Samoan explained, "I have never used a rod and reel before." We were stunned as he had earlier stated he was an accomplished fisherman. He went on to explain that he had always used a spear to wade fish in coastal lagoons on his island home and he was a good spear fisherman. After a quick lesson in the operation of an open faced reel he was casting almost as good as the best of us out there! The years of spear fishing seemed to have given him the needed excellent hand-to-eye coordination. He caught fish in no time. (Marshall M.)

Action Point
Jesus told Peter and Andrew he would show them how to fish for men. We often have people in our lives that we want to lead to the Lord and are often frustrated that we can't reel them in. We've used all the right baits and techniques and still nothing much ever changes. What we sometimes forget is that Jesus taught by letting his disciples see him live a righteous and holy life. It may be that's how we should try fishing for men, by letting them see us living a holy life. That's one way to teach a new skill, watch someone else practice what they are a teaching. Let your life be the teaching lesson to your friends.


Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
A good way to teach people to fish is in the back yard. Take a washer and tie it to the end of your line and set up targets in the yard. Learning how to cast accurately and deal with obstacles that you might encounter at the lake or river will really improve their casting ability. It will be good practice for you also.

Thoughts
At twenty years old, I had the privilege of bow hunting for elk in the Colorado Rockies. After shooting a 4x5 rag-horn elk, I found myself lost and wandering in the wilderness. It was early evening and darkness began settling in. My only light source was a very small hand held flashlight. Trekking through the steep and difficult terrain would be difficult. If that wasn't enough, another challenge shadowed me when my light began to dim.

Hiking for hours had drained its power and it was only moments from being extinguished forever. Tired and worn out, I stood at the bottom of a deep and dark valley,, faced with an extremely difficult climb. Three quarters of the way up the steep incline, my light died as well as my spirit. Lost and alone, I broke down and prayed.

I would spend the night out in the mountains, but not without God answering my prayers. After composing myself, I felt it was important to get to at least the top of the hill before hunkering down for the night. Upon cresting the ridge, the moon illuminated a field of golden heather and a two-track trail. I was able to travel the rest of the way with a light unto my feet. (Michael T.)

Action Point
Many times in life we find ourselves lost in a dark world without a light. Sometimes it is the blackness of our souls or the darkness of this world that extinguishes our light. We attempt to draw upon our own resources in hopes of meeting our own needs, but find the illuminating power to be weak or fading away. Put your focus on the Light of this world, Jesus Christ, and let His light and truth lead you.

Thoughts
Most of my enjoyable moments happen in God's outdoors. When I hear the wind and the clapping of leaves, I am filled with joy. I smile when I gaze at a thorn bush and think of all that has been redeemed, is redeemed, and will be redeemed. My husband laughs and shakes his head when he turns to see me deeply smelling a pine tree or a cactus blossom very carefully. There is a peace that speaks to my very soul as I drink in the mountains. I have been tearful in the beautiful silence of snow falling. I am filled with wonder as I have watched black bears eat from apple trees, big horn sheep stage the side of a cliff, elk bugle, trout jump, bass roll, quail gather their young, or a troop of coati chatter from a tree. God told Isaiah, "This will be for the Lord's renown, for an everlasting sign, which will not be destroyed" Isaiah 55:13b (NIV). He designed all creation to speak of who He is for His renown. He has not left His plan untold or cloaked in mystery. No, He continues to preach through His handiwork day after day, season after season. His everlasting sign speaks. He lives! He redeems! He is the Almighty Creator of heaven and earth. He alone is worthy of our time and worship. Thoughts
One of the tools we like to use in wildlife enforcement in the field is wildlife replicas (decoys). Decoys are very effective in reducing violations when used properly. We use them in areas that have had continuous problems with trespass, shooting from vehicles and roadways, and closed areas. I remember when we first started using decoys in my state. We wanted the set-ups to look perfect. We made sure there were no tracks to the decoy that would be visible from the road. One of the officers would drive by the set-up several times telling the officer at the decoy to turn it 5 inches one way or move the thing a few inches to the right or left, trying to make it look as natural as possible. If it was snowing, someone would put an orange vest on, go out and sweep the snow off its back every so often. Now, when I look back at the early days of decoy use, it's obvious to me that we worried way too much about the little things. If someone was bent on violating the law, they were going to shoot at the decoy no matter what we did. (Ron T.)

In the book of Matthew, God's word says not to worry about our lives, what we will eat, drink, or wear. The birds of the air don't sow or reap or store away food in barns and yet God sees to it that their needs are met. God knows the things we need and if we seek his kingdom and his righteousness these things will be given to us.And what good does worrying do anyhow, it doesn't change the outcome, and it doesn't add a single hour to our lives.


Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
After the season has closed and you give your rifle that final cleaning, try using a bore guide to protect the muzzle from the cleaning rod. A cheap bore guide can be made by using a spent 12 gauge shotgun hull with the primer taken out.

The apostle Paul, when speaking to the church at Ephesus, instructed men to be the Christ-like leaders of their family. The decline of America's values can be directly correlated with the decline of the American family. As a school teacher, 90 percent of behavior and academic problems occur with kids who do not have a father in the home. Special merit should be given to moms trying to raise a family alone, but Christ did not set it up that way. Because society chooses to ignore God's decrees, society decays. (Bink G.)

No one ever said living and loving your spouse would be the Garden of Eden (before Eve ate the apple). Women are different, biologically speaking, they have different hormones that require extra love, attention, and patience. God gave me the most wonderful woman in the world and I thank Him for her everyday. Our love grows stronger with daily prayer together, communication, and a Christ-first attitude. Sure, we get upset with each other at times, but it is hard to stay mad at her when my cell rings and "Beautiful" pops up on the caller ID. Her ring tone is a song which was popular when we were dating at East Texas Baptist University in 1994. She better not reveal what my ring tone is on her phone.

Happy Valentine's Day

Thoughts
Years ago I was in a small village deep in the Mexican desert on a missions trip. The residents of the village were very poor and had little means to support themselves let alone us. So a couple of others and I decided to camp on the outskirts of town. We surrrounded the fire with our bedrolls. Even in spring time in this desert, the temperature at night would drop near freezing.

Before we could turn in, we needed a plan. Firewood would have to be collected, enough to last through the night. It had to be quality wood. Mesquite was our choice since it would burn hot, long, and leave quality coals. We didn't choose the lighter wood, cottonwood, which would burn too quickly. We had to take turns, each one of us staying awake for a few hours at a time to feed the campfire. The chosen one had to make sure it never burned out, so the others could sleep in warmth. Action Point
After nearly twenty years of marriage, I have learned that marriage is a lot like the campfire in Mexico. You can not just build a marriage or any relationship, like that campfire, and then expect it to continue to flourish with out tending to it constantly. First and foremost God must be at the center, as the campfire was at the center of all of us. Next when it is well established, it needs to be tended to, not just on Valentine's Day or your wedding anniversary, but every day. Paul tells us a "love marked by giving, not getting." This means giving of yourself for her benefit. Tend to your wife regularly. Rub her feet after a long day at work or with the kids. Take the time to cook a meal and do the dishes. Wash her car and vacuum the french fries from under the seat. Do these things regularly. Let me emphasize the last point, do these things regularly. Sometimes it can be a bit of a sacrifice, just as it was to stay awake for hours feeding the fire so others could sleep. But the results are a long lasting, loving, and God entered relationship.


Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
I carry two prescription bottles in my backpack used for fire starting. The first contains several waterproof matches. The second contains petroleum jelly covered cotton balls. A single cotton ball covered with the jelly will burn for nearly two minutes.

Thoughts
One morning on a muzzleloader deer hunt, two friends and I discovered the track of what promised to be a toad of a muley. When he dropped into a deep narrow canyon, Randy stayed on his track while Jeff and I skirted around the top for a shot at this buck that would surely spook when he caught Randy's scent. We crept at least 100 yards along the edge of the canyon and waited while Randy hotly pursued the buck into the head of the canyon. Within minutes we heard a clatter of hooves right beneath us as this monster escaped from under a palo verde tree and scrambled straight up the opposite side of the canyon. I settled in with my TC Renegade and shooting stick, an ancient saguaro skeleton spine, and readied for the shot that I guessed was at least 125 yards (later 'ranged' at 165 yards). Jeff whispered, "Are you gonna shoot?" I replied, "When he gets to the top, he's gonna stop." Sure enough when that big buck topped out on the other side of the canyon, he stopped and looked back for a glimpse of what had spooked him from his noontime nap. That's when I lowered the boom on him. (Ruben C.)

Action Point
This particular scenario had never presented itself. I wasn't certain that buck would stop. By faith I believed he would, because my dad had encouraged me to wait for such opportunities when dealing with a spooked buck. With just my old man's advice ringing in the back of my mind, I waited for the shot. He was right.

Paul told the Philippians don't just obey when I'm around to watch (like anyone would when you're in church), but as well when I'm not. We are called to be Christ like each day of the week, not just on Sunday while in the midst of the pastor and the body of believers. It is not easy. If we are to win others to Christ, we must set the example and walk as Jesus did. 1 John 2:6 instructs, "Whoever claims to live in him must walk as Jesus did (NIV)." Like I was eventually rewarded with that buck, you too will be rewarded with winning others to Christ. His blood can save us all.


Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
Don't know why they do it, but they do more often than not. A mule deer buck will stop at the top of a ridge and look back if you've spooked him and he doesn't know what "you" are. Save this for the running shot that you're not all that warm and fuzzy about or as a lesson for young hunters. Worst case scenario if you don't take a chance on an "iffy" running shot, you'll have an opportunity on the other side of the hill at a buck that's settled down. If you're patient and give him enough time, he will.

Presidents Day

Thoughts
After a long enjoyable day deer hunting, my son and I were sitting around the perfect campfire he had built. We had been there for awhile just enjoying life when one of the logs rolled out and away from the fire. We were both too comfortable to move so we just let it lay there and watched it slowly burn its self out. After a while my son finally got up and kicked the log back into the fire. Within seconds, that log was a blaze of fire again.

The next morning resting under a tree, I started thinking about that log in the fire. God mentions several times the importance of being among fellow believers and staying in fellowship with other christians. There is power and strength in numbers. I know for me, it is easier to stay on fire for God when I am around other Christians. But when I have been away for awhile, it is difficult to keep that fire burning as hot and as bright as I should. The devil knows how to poke you in hopes that you will become separated from God.

Don't wait for something to happen that kicks you back to God. If you have been out of church for awhile or away from your bible studies, don't wait any longer. Become focused on Him. You will be surprised how much better you will feel and how fast that spark will turn back into a blaze. (Dave L. W.)

Thoughts
Even though all the collegiate football action is over for another season, some sports fans are still debating who should be number one. A friend at church, who listens to sports talk radio regularly, commented that after the Florida-Oklahoma game, the particular station he was listening to was besieged with callers complaining about the game announcers' comments about the Florida quarterback's, Tim Tebow, christian background.

My friend's point was that there were no callers defending the right of the commentator to report about every aspect of the game, including Tebow's christian beliefs. He thought christian listeners should have called and gave their point-of-view on the subject. We as christians should not be ashamed to testify about our faith. The comments about Tebow's background even though not intended to be "preaching" might have been what someone watching the game needed for his or her life. (Tom B.)

Action Point
God gives us all different platforms to tell others about Him. It might be on a fishing boat, a deer blind, or just riding in the truck on the way to an outdoor adventure. When the opportunity presents itself, we should not be ashamed to talk about what we believe. One wouldn't hesitate to describe the monster fish he or she caught. Don't be bashful telling about those wonderful things God has done in your life.


Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
I remember when I used to tear down my fishing reels and service them myself. I would not recommend that now considering the complexity of the new reels. The experts who repair fishing reels recommend only cleaning and lubricating exterior parts of the modern day reel. Take your reels to a qualified repair specialist for cleaning, lubrication, and repair.

Last summer I had the opportunity to spend some time on a sport fishing boat in Alaska. Eight of us left Wrangell and headed out to sea for a week. During the day there was plenty of commotion; baiting lines for halibut or salmon, checking baits, landing fish, cooking meals, watching for bears and wolves, and cleaning various pieces of equipment; you know the drill. There was always something to do. We were always busy. When night came and we all went to bed, it would get quiet and so wonderfully peaceful. To fully appreciate this, you have to understand that I live in Phoenix, AZ and hear noise from two freeways, a railroad, a nearby fire station, and the airport. It's never quiet where I live. The quiet is one of the primary reasons that I spend time in the mountains, or in this case, out to sea. In the middle of the night, I would go out to the fantail of the boat and just stare at the sky and listen, to nothing! I just couldn't believe how quiet and peaceful it was in the middle of the night on the Alaskan sea. (Cliff S.)

Action Point
We all live in a hurry-up world. Where can you go where there's not a phone, a radio, a television, a computer, or some other source of interruption to your day? Take time to get alone, preferably somewhere where it is as quiet as possible. You will be amazed as to what it will do for your state of mind. And when you're there in that quiet place, listen for God's still small voice. It's there in the quiet that He can speak and you can hear Him the best.


Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
Many times when I go to the mountains as soon as I hit the edge of town, the radio gets turned off. Upon my return to the city, the radio can go back on. The time in between is used to enjoy the quiet, to read, to think, and to pray. Try it the next time you head out. You'll be pleasantly surprised as to how refreshing it can be to escape the noise of daily life for a couple of days.

What is it that really draws us to the outdoors? I'm sure there are a multitude of reasons depending on who you talk to. For me, I long for a sense of serenity. I have always longed for that. When I'm by a babbling brook or high on a majestic mountaintop, that is where I experience a rare peace and a comfort that I usually don't find during the everyday grind. (Tom H.)

Action Point
Over the years I have been blessed with many great insights from christian writers and speakers. One theme I have seen repeated is that of security and significance. Maybe the Lord is trying to tell me something. Here's what I think it is. It's that, my longing for serenity really is a deep heartfelt need for the intimacy of a secure and meaningful relationship with the Lord. The bottom line is that He truly is the only source for my need. Find peace in the outdoors, but find a greater, more satisfing peace seriously relating to Jesus.


Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
If you have an old thin foam backpacking pad that you can spare, cut a section of it off about 18" long. It can be used as a pad to sit on in the woods or by a stream or for landscaping when I need to kneel down to lay rocks or other materials.

Thoughts
I recall fond memories when I hunted whitetail in Minnesota. Vivid were those crisp, cold opening day mornings waiting for that first light on the eastern horizon. Due to the dense brush, my first indication of wildlife was not visible, but the sound of the crunching snow or the dry fallen leaves of fall. Excitement increased with the anticipation of the approaching deer coming my way. Often times it was a grey squirrel scurrying from tree to tree, once it was a pine martin looking for a small rodent around the dead falls, and another time it was a ruffed grouse walking down a deer trail with a coyote tracking 30 feet behind. My fondest memory was a very still morning when I heard the periodic footsteps of what seemed to be a deer. He chose the deer trail I was on and finally came into view. My heart was pounding! I shot my 30-30 and bagged my first whitetail buck. (Tom L.)

Just as listening to the sounds of wildlife is important to having success in hunting; listening to God during meditation enables us to experience a personal relationship with God. In the book, How To Develop a Powerful Prayer Life, Dr. Frizzell says, "I even go so far to say that listening to God is the fundamental key to an effective prayer life. Prayer is our discovering what God wants to do and joining him as co-laborers though our prayers. Through meditating you learn to hear God's leading and thus your prayers initiate from His heart and mind."

When the snow or leaves are crunchy, allow yourself extra time to get to your stand. Always travel in the dark walking slowly and carefully.

Thoughts
As a teenager I stayed hunting in the field much longer than planned. I had walked a lot further in the Sonoran desert than I had wanted to. I got so dehydrated that my legs started to cramp and my tongue was literally sticking to the roof of my mouth. Finally, I came across a small barrel cactus and plunged my knife in again and again. When I think back to my years growing up, I was most attracted to men like you reading this article. Sportsmen, hunters, adventurers, cowboys that rode rodeo & risked their lives, and especially if they had wall mounts of their conquests. My Christian parents worried that their maverick, rebel, and renegade ways would influence me away from Christianity, but they didn't. Instead they opened my eyes to the God-colors of this big beautiful world and encouraged me to explore and to expand my horizons to discover all that God made available to us as men. (Wes W.)

Thoughts
This fall held one the most challenging trips we had taken. Nothing was going right. The weather was nightmarish, the deer weren't moving like expected, and we had tried various locations while moving to three different motels. We weren't seeing hardly any deer, let alone the big ones we had gone there for. Yet at any point the rut could change, so we kept getting up at 5 in the morning and hunting the whole day. Finally after six days, someone flipped the switch. I harvested a really nice 10 point.

I'm sure you can think of challenging times you have had in the field or on the water. You wanted to give up, yet kept at it, and your perseverance was rewarded. Sometimes in life we want to give up due to circumstances, yet we are reminded of all Jesus has done for us. We have something to hope for, no matter what is happening at the current time. (Ross G)

Putting your faith and trust in Jesus is easy to do when things are going well. Use the challenging times to develop your character and to remember the love Jesus has for you. It's the tough times that will strengthened your faith in Him.

How true that is! Pocket bible helps to. When things get slow sit and read Gods word for a while. It will build you up and keep you occupied at the same time. Something wonderfull about sitting in Gods creation reading his word. At least for me.

Conservation groups maintain and record the detailed measurements and weights of world record harvests. They specify the scoring criteria and stipulate rules and regulations on the game we pursue. While some of us only chase world records, most realize that taking a record fish or animal is merely a byproduct from the challenge of the pursuit. Nevertheless, we adhere to those specific rules and guidelines set before us; a system by which we recognize as an ethical benchmark of success in the field. (Will D)

Action Point
The world's system used to record man's earthly successes is a bit different. Its criterion measures things like the size of our house, our bank account, or the kind of vehicle we drive - usually without regard of rules, ethics, or fair chase. God doesn't use that system. His is a Heavenly one. Only the heart is measured. He keeps no record of where it's been nor what it's said, thought, or done. His standard begins with and relies on simple faith, one found in and through His son Jesus Christ. Are you His world record trophy?

Ash Wednesday, First Day of Lent

Thoughts
There's an old saying that my Dad used to quote whenever we were preparing for a hunting trip. It went like this: "Anticipation is ninety percent of participation." Dad's point was that the actual preparation for the trip was a large part of the pleasure of the hunting experience. My son and I have proved this point on every trip we've gone on, be it hunting, camping, skiing, or scuba diving. Getting ready for the trip is almost a sacred part of the overall experience and is a bunch of fun! We as outdoors folks also understand that preparation for an outing often means setting things aside for a while and maybe doing without some things for a while. For example, we may have to save a little money here and there to pay for tags, ammo, and gas for a trip. We may not eat some of our favorite foods (McDonald's fries) in order to take off a few pounds and to be able to climb those hills a little easier. We may even climb on an exercise bike for a few weeks to get the lungs and the legs in shape for the exertion that will be involved with the particular activity. While we may not relish the sacrifices that we're making, we know that what we are doing will make the actual trip more enjoyable. (Cliff S)

Lent is a season where we as Christians are challenged to offer something to God in order to remind us of His gift to us, our salvation. Make no mistake; we aren't doing anything here to earn our salvation, that's purely a function of the grace of God. But, what we do during this season should remind us of how much God loves us and what Jesus did for us when He died on the cross. A good friend shared with me that whatever she "gives up" for Lent serves as a reminder of Jesus' love during this time of year. The way she put it, every time she thought about doing whatever it was she gave up for forty days, it served to remind her that Jesus loves her. I would add a suggestion, if you participate in Lent, whenever you are thinking about what you've sacrificed for those forty days, let it not only remind you of Jesus' love, but also let it serve as a reminder to pray for somebody that needs God's gift of salvation.


Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
When you're preparing for a trip, make a list of the various things you'll need. I make four columns: camping equipment, hunting equipment, clothes, and food. After each item is placed in the pile in the living room it gets a check by it. When it's in the truck, it gets a second check. That way I know not only that I have the item, but that it is in the truck.

Thoughts
I had been sitting near the water tank for a few hours, with a cow elk tag in my backpack. Nothing had come in and darkness was near. As I grew tired and my senses seemed to dull, I suddenly detected the unmistakable smell of elk. It hit me in the face like a Mike Tyson upper cut, but I could see nothing. For several minutes I searched the areas in my line of vision, nothing in front of me and nothing to the sides of me; it must be behind me I thought. After fifteen minutes of waiting and the sun setting, I decided I needed to turn to see if it was behind me, even at the risk of alerting it to my presence. Slowly I turned and there it was, a large bull elk standing 20 feet behind at the edge of the tree line. Fortunately he hadn't seen me. For the next twenty minutes he stood motionless. With an extreme amount of patience and diligence, he slowly scanned the area for danger. His head moved so slow as to be undetectable, until I noticed his antlers where now facing a different direction. He continued this for the better part of an hour and well into the darkness. Action Point
Jesus tells us to look at the fig tree. When the leaves begin to change colors we know that the season is beginning to change. He says that we will be able to recognize the season of His return in the same way. We will not know the day or time, but we will know the season. Many of the signs He tells us to look for are all around us. Many believe we are in the season of the end times. Whether we are or not, Jesus instructs us to be watchful. We are to be like that elk and diligently watch out for the signs and dangers, to "look to the heavens" for His return. Many of us have seen the surprise when an animal steps into our line of sight during hunting season. Do not let that day take you by "complete surprise".


Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
During rain or snowy weather place a small piece of black electrical tape over the tip of your muzzle. It will keep the moisture out of your barrel and will easily give way when you take your shot.

Thoughts
The January retreat in Rockport, TX, was an outreach ministry aimed at introducing the Word of God to men who might not make it to church, but surely would not miss a duck hunting trip. The next morning the invited speaker hunted with the event leader and the pastor of the sponsoring church. The bay flat the group planned to hunt was surrounded by some pretty mucky stuff. A quagmire would be a better term. The speaker waded off in a hole trying to retreive decoys and sunk to his chest in mud. The pastor was beside himself, worried that the speaker would sink past his head. I laughed; I had been in this predicament many times in my younger days. Short story - they tied a rope to me and pulled me out. (Bink G)

After the pastor settled down and realized I would be alright, I assured him that my sinking would make a good devotional.

My experience brought to mind the hymn, The Solid Rock, that I have sung countless times:

Stink does not begin to describe it! Abbi, my German Shorthair pointer, had pointed to the wrong thing. Seems like bird dogs are drawn with fateful determination to skunks that sometimes hide under the grass and in some out of the way places. This one gave her the whole load of his defensive ability. She was hit squarely in the mouth. She was pitiful. She slobbered profusely, shook her head repeatedly, and walked around in a dazed condition. The sad thing is that it was not the first time. This instant replay has been repeated over and over through the years. She seems never to learn that the alluring smell will end in dreadful consequences of pain and discomfort. (Jackie M)

The sharing of the gospel is described as a smell or a fragrance in the passages above. It portrays the response of others to the good news of immortality that is available in Jesus Christ. Because they oppose Christ, some people consider the smell of our witness as offensive as a decaying body. Some people smell eternal life! We are to spread the fragrant smell of eternal life in Jesus Christ. Let’s use our fishing, hunting, and other outdoor activities to spread Christ to our friends. Some will hear and receive the gift of eternal life. They will choose to spend eternity with us and with the Lord.

Scents are a valuable tool for today’s hunters. Learning when and how to use them can multiply the chances of success afield. Whether stink baits for catfish, attractants for deer, or the odors used to attract animals for other reasons, the use and expense of scents often determines success or failure.

Thoughts
I was sitting quietly in my tree stand as the light rain began to fall. The gentle tapping on the leaves was relaxing. The fact that I had already taken a nice 10 point the previous day added to the relaxation that I was enjoying. I sat there just talking to God quietly, watching deer, and listening to the gentle rain for the entire afternoon. As dark began to fall I mumbled softly to myself, "Why can't this relaxed feeling continue on and on? Why do I feel so much closer to God out here in the woods?" (Brian H.)

Action Point
The answer to my question is this: I feel closer to God out in the woods because I'm being still and quiet. That's it! When I'm at home or at work, I have the television blaring or the radio on or people chatting nearby. The fact is that we have made our world very complicated and noisy. Only when we get out by ourselves, get quiet, and become still are we able to just sit and know that He is God. Try scheduling some time to yourself whether it's out hunting or just sitting on the porch with a cup of coffee. Get rid of the distractions for a little while. Take some time to be still and remember that our God, He is truly God.


Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
Here's a twist on deer steaks. Roll a small chunk of cheddar cheese and a jalapeno slice inside a butterfly cut steak and toothpick together with bacon wrapped around the outside. Cook slowly on the charcoal pit until the bacon is done. Delicious!

Thoughts
Flee, get out of there! Run! My wife hollered at me as the hornets swarmed up out of the ground. We were out on a ride, enjoying the beautiful fall colors on a back country trail when her horse stepped too close to a nest of hornets. I was behind and even though I saw them beginning to swarm I was unable to get Tuni to move as fast as I would like. We had a rodeo for a few moments but I managed to hang on for the 8 seconds and finally got away, unscathed, and neither of us stung. (Byron FS)

Action Point
Sin, like hornets can swarm up suddenly and overwhelm us. It is surprising how quickly desire can turn to sin. Jesus knows that and tells us "Flee," "Run," "Don't Tarry," but get away from there as quickly as you can. When the desire strikes, stop, voice a short quick prayer, and ask Him to intervene. "Dear Lord, I need help right now, I am too weak to stand up to the Devil. I ask you to stand between me and him and drive these thoughts from my mind." It is amazing how this will help you flee the situation and move on to something more productive.


Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
We love to ride in the fall, but have to stay on guard in our country for ground hornets, also called meat bees. They have a nasty temperament this time of year. Carry a small bottle of ammonia in your first aid kit. This works very well on stings to relieve the pain. If you are allergic to bee stings, be sure you have your sting kit along and be sure it's not outdated.

Thoughts
The above desert bighorn sheep petroglyph is high on a mountain by some natural water collecting rock holes, similar to a bath tub. I just reasoned from those long ago signs that some Indian while waiting to ambush supper when the sheep came to water, would hide under cover while drawing on the rocks. I put that in my memory bank in case I ever want to hunt one. Thanks for the sign fellow hunter. (Wes W)

Action Point
This was God's promise to Solomon. Instead of asking God for riches, honor, and long life, he asked for a discerning and God-listening heart. Now as a man a few thousand years later I can grasp that, reason it, and apply it to my life today. I will follow the God-signs.

Thoughts
The lifespan of a Mahi- Mahi, Dorado, is only about 3 years. Needless to say, they have remarkable growth rates. In fact, scientists believe it is possible for them to grow as fast as three inches per week. To do so, they cannot simply wait for meals to approach - survival and this rapid growth rate depends on their ability to devour food with speed and aggression. It is this acumen that makes them such a remarkable and acrobatic game fish.

In the parable of sower, Jesus tells us what can hinder our spiritual growth - distractions that keep you and me from being remarkable Christians. The "thorns" that existed over 2000 years ago are still present today dubiously distracting us from spiritual growth. (Will D)

Action Point
Avoid life's thorns by devouring God's word with speed and aggression. Consume His word daily; retain, and apply it to your daily life. Plant yourself in good soil by refusing to allow the thorns of this world to distract you. In doing so, you will become the person God has created you to be.


Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
When fishing the oceans for pelagic species, always scan the horizon for debris or Sargasso patches. Fish them. Recently I saw a bright green kid's pool floating that had drifted miles offshore. Thoughts
Habitat in Georgia is quite different from Minnesota I discovered while whitetail deer hunting. Northern Minnesota forests provide dogwood shrubs, willow, alder, ironwood, white birch, red and white oak, aspen, several species of conifers, and a few agricultural fields. Georgia varies with live oak, hickory, magnolias, holly, pine, various trees draped in Spanish moss, and scattered peanut and cotton fields. The temperature varies about 40 degrees. I realized how far from home I was when a lizard scurried across the rail of my tree stand. Although, we didn't see any, we were warned about the alligators, snakes, and wild pigs. Amazing is the whitetail's adaptability in thriving from Canada all the way south to Mexico. The South blessed us with southern hospitality, great Christian fellowship, two bucks, and two does.(Tom L)

It is my prayer that we adapt our lives to the leading of the Holy Spirit by using our gifts in serving God. Let us not sit on the sidelines and conform to this world, but be transformed by following God's direction in our lives.

Thoughts
On a recent fishing trip to Manitoba, we hit severe weather. The wind blew and the waves crashed against the shore. With dim lights and small beds the old, remote outpost cabin hardly provided a refuge from the storm. The walls creaked and glass from an old door shattered. The three friends, who sat around the table that day, exchanged life stories and experiences. The long day became short and our prayers were answered. The setting sun shone through the clouds and we survived the day thanking God for the time we had spent together. (Jim C)

Action Point
We have all had those days where we need to be rescued. Stress, anxiety, and depression seem to grab hold of us and never let's go. The outdoors has always been my OUT and my IN. It's been my OUT for relief, a time of reflection, a time to take a deep breath, and a time to talk with God. Even if you have to take a short walk away, down a trail, out behind your house to look up at the sky, to see the trees, to hear the wind blow, or see the sun set. It can be your out. The short time away can be you're IN with God. Look up to the sky or toward the setting sun and ask God to help you. You will be amazed at the results.

On any adventure into the wilderness, it is always a good idea to known how to pack and to prepare for the terrain and the weather you could encounter. Always think, what if? Educate yourself on where you are going and the possibilities that could occur. You will be better off for it.

Action Point
The hard part for me would have been getting out of the boat. Can you imagine what people would say today if you stepped off the bow of your boat and tried to walk on water? Why does it take miraculous signs and wonders for us to believe in the omnipotent power of Jesus Christ? He is the same yesterday, today, and forever! If He tells you to walk on water, don't hesitate - get your feet wet!

Thoughts
Boy, does this verse trigger thoughts. Do you remember saying something like this to your parents, a teacher, or maybe to a Game Warden? "My hunting partner told me to do it, he said it was OK." Kind of sounds like Flip Wilson's famous statement, "The devil made me do it!" Yep, good old Adam invented the oldest line ever used to shift blame to someone else for his own actions. First he tried to lay the blame at God's feet for putting the woman there, and then he blamed the woman. Wait a minute, who did God give the command to? Right again, it was given to Adam. Genesis 2:16-17 reflects, "And the Lord God commanded the man, 'You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die' (NIV)." Adam should have known better than to have eaten the fruit of the forbidden tree, but he went along with the crowd, so to speak. He did something dumb and then tried to blame everybody else for what he did. (Cliff S)

Action Point
Take responsibility for your actions, good or bad. In the long run it will serve you better to admit your mistake(s) than to try to cover them up or to blame somebody else for what you did. Remember, your sins will find you out!

Thoughts
Although the verse above is aimed at the qualifications for an overseer in the church, it really goes for all believers. When we're involved in Christian fellowship, we can lean on each other for help and encouragement. When we are among others on the "outside," that is outside a community of believers, we become more vulnerable to the tactics of the devil because we are removed from the security provided by Christian fellowship. A good personal testimony is important in keeping us focused on the things of God. It's like trapping, which of course, is done outside. Satan likes to trap men outside the family of God. Christians must be wary because Satan will use every lure and attractant at his disposal to catch us. A good, consistent testimony overcome the tricks of the devil. (Don H)

Surround yourself with Christian friends. Regularly attend the church of your choice. Take the family to Christian events. Participate in a Bible study or even start a Bible study group on your own. Join Christian-based outdoor sports organizations. Use every way you can find to stay involved with other believers. It's dangerous outside of Christian fellowship. If you are not a Christian, become a child of the King now by asking Jesus to forgive you of your sins and then confessing Him as Lord of your life. Then, begin to hang out with Christian friends! Don't be trapped by the devil!


Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
A piece of thick plastic bolted to an old ironing board makes an ideal butcher or food prep table. It can be folded up and stored easily, even hung out of the way. The plastic can be form-cut from an old office chair floor mat or other heavy plastic item. It's easily sterilized with clorox or alcohol before placing food on it. Used ironing boards can be found at thrift stores, usually for a bargain. I use one for all butchering, filleting, and other food prep chores.

Thoughts
One of the things that keep me going during the long Northern Michigan winter months is planning. I enjoy the winter activities, but I also enjoy sitting by our fireplace with an outdoor's magazine in hand just daydreaming about possible adventures that I could take with my family. I'll check out new hiking trails, equipments needs for various adventures, and the costs of possible trips. You get the idea, basic daydreaming. What happens when I am doing research like this is a feeling of anticipation that wells up in my soul. I just love putting these trips together and the thought of going is just about as exciting as actually taking the trip. The anticipation makes the cold winter months just fly by! (Dave M.)

Jesus is going to come back some day - could be very soon or later on. No one really knows the day or the hour. However, the timing shouldn't matter. We should eagerly be looking forward to the day that he comes back to claim what is rightfully his. Will he do it? Yes, he will. Don't be caught off guard. Live your life anticipating his return! We only have a limited number of days on this Earth - make them count for eternity.

When planning a trip, see if you can find a way to double dip on the experience to get more for your money. Many "fishing camps" in Canada will also have bear hunts, moose hunts, or bird hunts in the late summer or early fall. Instead of just taking a fishing trip, why not wait until late August to do both? Fish in the morning and hunt in the afternoon! Now that's a great way to spend a day!!!

How bold are we about hunting? Some of us would stand in the middle of a hostile anti-hunting crowd yelling positive hunting statistics. Some of us will give our money to pro-hunting agencies who speak up for us in legislature. Some of us will be the silent majority, not speaking up at all about our love of hunting.

Your way of portraying the hunting community is up to you. You can exhibit your sport by making sure everyone sees your harvest as you drive home or you can discreetly transport your catch. Either way you love hunting and fishing and must not be ashamed of your outdoor sport. (Dennis W)

Action Point
How bold are we about our faith? Daniel was unashamed of his faith. Even when he knew that his faith could cost him his life, he was unashamed. We should be as bold in our faith, unashamed of God, and willing to take the consequences for being counted with Christ. Thoughts
We headed out to our favorite crappie hole pulling all our gear in a make shift sled with the kids riding on top across the ice. There were already a few ice fishermen at the spot, but plenty of room for us. The other guys had been there about an hour with no luck at all. We drilled a hole in the ice and stuck the vexilar (sonar) down the hole; the depth was 30 feet and it showed a school of crappies suspended at 18 feet. We drilled a couple more holes and lowered our tear drop jigs baited with fat wax worms to 18 feet. Bam! As soon as the hook hit the correct depth, the action started. It was fast and steady. We told the other fishermen to drop their bait to 18 feet. As soon as they did, they started putting crappies on the ice. The other guys had all the right stuff, just not the right depth. They needed someone to tell them at what depth the crappies were located. (Ron T)

Action Point
The Ethiopian in this verse had all the right stuff. He had God's word, the desire to learn, and an open heart to take in what he had read. He just needed someone to explain the meaning of what he was reading. God provided that by sending Philip across his path. In Luke 10:2 Jesus said, "The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into the harvest field (NIV)." That's us! We are the workers that God can use to spread the good news to those who don't know Jesus. If we have an open heart to God's will, he will put us in the right spot to add to the harvest.


Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
You can make your own ice jig by using a #12 dry fly hook. Take a paper punch and punch a hole in an aluminum can. Fold the little piece of aluminum around the hook shank just below the eye (shiny side out). Crimp it tight with a pair of needle nose pliers. Stick on a wax worm and a small split shot several inches above the hook to weight it down.

Thoughts
While archery elk hunting this morning, I came upon one of the biggest Coues white tail bucks I've ever seen, drinking at a spring. This "grey ghost", as they're often referred to, looked up at me from his drink, oddly went back to drinking, and allowed me to get a full view of his awesome rack. Normally, they seem to fade into their surroundings without hesitation. This wise ole' buck must have somehow known I couldn't take a shot at him, for it wasn't deer season, yet. They don't get that big being careless in their ways. I sat amazed in the moment at this fine creature God gave me the opportunity to enjoy this morning. Then I thanked Him for that very rare moment which made my morning, because I may not have an opportunity like that again for a long time. (Jimmy S)

An easy way to guard your soul against destruction is to keep His commandments. Memorize them, meditate on them, and keep them written in a place where you can often read them.


Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
When hunting for Coues white tail remember, they are habitual animals with a small home range. If you see a nice buck before the season, he probably won't be far from that same spot once the season starts.

Thoughts
Imagine that scene! It's a powerful verse and for me hard to wrap myself around. It would be an amazing site. One of the most beautiful things to enjoy in any outdoor adventure is the rising of the sun. When that sun comes up over the trees, rising out of the ocean, or from behind a hill side, it becomes a truly remarkable picture. There are mornings that as the sun is rising, God paints the sky light blue, purple, and pink adding in the fiery red of the sun. Now that is a back drop for the King on his throne! (Jim C.)

Action Point
On your next adventure a field or on the water, watch the sun rise, take a second, and appreciate that God has created this for you. No matter where you are, you are the only one that can see the sun from that exact angle. It's a present from the Father to you. This should jump start your day!

When choosing to capture a sunrise or sunset, always have your camera ready as the scene changes constantly. Some of the most beautiful pictures I have taken, occurred from the shadows, colors, and designs that appear in the sky quickly at a moment's notice.

Thoughts
At sunset we watched as the elk headed up to the top of a steep, dark timbered knoll. Before sunrise we were stragically at the base of the hill. We had planned to meet up on the other side of the mountain and at sunup hunt for the herd which included a nice promising bull. My experienced trail horse had little difficulty making it to the top while my partner was circling around the mountain. It was still dark as the horse and I eased slowly into the trees and came to a stop. I recall smelling the elk at the same time the lead cow barked the alarm. The entire herd of elk jumped and ran all at once! I had walked right into the bedded down herd. My horse spooked violently when the elk stood up and took off running; I went flying off the saddle, but fortunately held on to the reins. After a few excited seconds of calming and soothing my horse and I trying to catch my breath, I took stock of what happened. I indeed was blessed. Neither my horse nor myself were hurt. Just both of us startled out of our wits. (Marshall M)

Action Point
The dark is a scary place when you are not right with God. Our relationship with Christ is like having a really good flashlight, lantern, or spotlight. As long as the lens is "clean", we can see quite clearly to walk along life's path. However as we put sin between the Lord and us, the lens of that light gets "dirty" and we are soon in total darkness. Take the time today to talk with God, get your life lens clean, and make sure you're living in the light.

Always carry spare batteries for your flashlight. The light is more than a comfort; it literally can be a life saver in many situations. If possible buy all your hunting accessories, camera, flashlight, GPS, and rangefinder requiring the same size batteries.

Thoughts
A friend of mine was processing his deer at home with his kids watching. Left from the field dressing, some blood ran out of the body cavity. His daughter squealed, "Ewwhh! Blood!" His observant three year old son replied, "The blood provides forgiveness for our sins." My friend was presented with a perfect teaching opportunity. He told his two children how the deer's blood had to be shed so they could use the deer for food. He was able to explain that the blood of Jesus was shed on the cross that we might have our sins forgiven and our guilt washed away.

How amazing that a three year old was so understanding of such an important truth! It reminds us to train up these little ones in the things of the Lord; they can understand. It also lets us know that our sins deserve death, but Jesus' blood secures life for all who will by faith receive him as their own Savior and Lord. (Jackie M)

Action Point
Blood trailing is an important tool for the hunter. Many can tell where the animal has been hit by the blood's appearance. Bright red blood is usually from an arterial source, which is usually an indication of a solid hit. Bright red blood, with bubbles in it, signifies a lung shot. Dark red blood can show a hit in a vein or the liver. This is usually not a good sign for the hunter.


Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
Always search diligently for evidence of a hit anytime you release an arrow or shoot at a game animal. Look for blood, for hair, or for any sign of a hit. Throw your hat down or hang it up as a center mark and make ever increasing circles to locate any sign. Follow that sign until you find the quarry or lose the sign.

Thoughts
The story of the fall of man is just one of the many times individuals in the Old Testament have sought out "God Status". There are other examples of God's creation seeking to be just like Him, such as Cain deciding who lives and who dies, Lamech who chose to change the rules of marriage, Nimrod and others seeking to be as powerful as a god, and a group of people who had a lame-brain idea to build a tower in an attempt to literally reach the level of "God Status".

How many times do we try to set up our own rules, create our own timelines, and make demands for how our life is supposed to play out? Do we try to take matters into our own hands? Do we try to become men or women of power? Do we dictate to God, like Cain, what is an acceptable sacrifice? If none of these thoughts pertain to you, ignore this devotional. If anything mentioned here hits home, confess your sins to the one and only true God and seek his forgiveness for attempting to claim "God Status".

Make a special effort to take your children out into the woods or the field with you. If you do not have children, see if you can borrow one or become part of a mentoring program. Wait just a minute before you take off! Don't be tempted to teach them all of your tricks instead passively engage and see what they teach you about hunting or maybe life.

Thoughts
Living at the high altitude of 8000 ft, I have the opportunity to observe cyclists preparing for a race. They come here to work on stamina and to enjoy the great summer time weather. The mountainous terrain provides a very tough workout. Only those who are in the best shape are able to compete at these high altitudes. (Byron S)

Action Point
We know how to keep our physical bodies in shape, but how about keeping our spiritual bodies in great shape? The best way to keep yourself spiritually sound is to start your day on your spiritual treadmill, your Bible. Take time each day to read, start with a proverb of the day. There are 31 chapters in Proverbs, one for each day of the month. They provide some great thoughts to chew on for the day. For example today is the 18th of March, read Proverbs 18. After you have finished, work on a chapter in the New or Old Testament. If you are new to this, start with the book of John. Take it slow until you work yourself into spiritual shape. Remember, you have a great coach at your side, the Holy Spirit. Always begin with prayer asking for help in understanding and wisdom. It won't take long and you will find yourself anxious to learn more each day. There is a crown waiting for those who are willing to endure the race and finish well.


Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
It does not matter if it is biking, hunting, or fishing, it is important to work at getting into good shape. Walk every day for at least 30 minutes at a good pace, best done if you get your heart rate up and keep it there. It will make a big difference when you are riding your mountain bike, going after that trophy buck, or paddling around in your float tube trying to catch the big one.

Thoughts
Late in the fall I snuck out for one more fly fishing adventure before the snow and ice came. I knew that soon parts of my favorite trout stream would be turned into a skating rink or an ice castle. As I brought one throbbing rainbow to the net, I was struck by how noticeably the stream had changed. The meandering even fragile creek, just a few months ago, had become torrid and rushing with fall rains. As nature takes on the change of seasons, so does life. Sometimes the waters of life, once flowing smooth and soothingly, are now "roaring and foaming". But God is "a very present" help, and that is indeed what we need. Not only when the streams of life flow gently, but also when they surge menacingly. (Matt F)

In what season of life does the Psalmist find you? Are you blessed with the streams that flow gently or has God called you to the mighty rushing waters that roar and foam? Be renewed in the hope that he is your very present help, no matter what the circumstances.


Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
In cold weather stream fishing be prepared for the worst a creek can throw at you. Equip yourself with good wading boots, a wading staff, and even a change of clothes. Nothing can ruin a cold weather fishing trip like wet clothes after the unplanned swim.

Thoughts
In Hunter Education classes, we talk quite a bit about hunting rules and regulations. We stress that you must not only be familiar with the regulations where you are hunting, but, more importantly, that you must hunt by them. In one class we were talking about "buddy hunting" (being allowed legally to kill an animal for another hunter) which is not legal in my state. However, I've been told that it is in others. One student answered a question affirmatively that it is legal to shoot another hunter's animal for him. That may be fine back home where he grew up, but not in my state. It was an excellent illustration of reading and becoming familiar with the rules where you are going to be hunting. Now that this student knows the rule, I assume that he will go into the field and follow that rule. (Cliff S)

Action Point
It's important to read and to study God's word and to know what is contained there. But just knowing the Word of God isn't enough, we must be determined to walk by it. The Bible says that if we walk by the word of God, we will have peace and will be in fellowship with Him. That's a rule I want to follow!

Review the regulations where you are going to hunt on a regular basis. Regulations do change. It's your responsibility as an ethical hunter to know and follow the rules.

Thoughts
The Super Bowl XLIII commercials reminded me of an all out effort to sell products. Approximately $3,000,000 is spent for a 30 second commercial or $100,000 for one second of time. That's astounding! Sportsmen spend millions of dollars on equipment and licenses. They also spend countless hours on beneficial conservation efforts. Wyoming license fees help to improve habitat, wildlife restoration and conservation, fund education, law enforcement, and other programs. In all these cases people spend time, money, and energy to promote a product or a purpose.

Action Point
The questions are:

  • Do we put enough time, money, and energy toward THE GREAT COMMISSION?
  • What are our priorities?
  • Do we value our purpose?
  • Do we use our God given gifts to make and to teach disciples?
  • Can we do more?
With God's help the answer is always YES. Remember Matthew 28:20b, "And surely I am with you always, to the end of the age (NIV)."

A great way to start a conversation about the Lord's work is to wear a Sportsmen's Devotional hat or put a SD decal on your vehicle. A typical question I've heard many times is, " What's that all about?" My testimony and some good talk about fishing and hunting follows.

Thoughts
Chronic wasting disease (CWD) is a fatal brain disease found in deer and elk. The animals infected with CWD show a loss of weight and poor body condition. It is always fatal for the afflicted deer or elk. There are a lot of unknowns when it comes to CWD. For example, it's not totally understood how the animals are infected or if the disease can be transmissible to humans or domestic livestock. There are no cases of this happening, but one should be cautious and avoid handling any wild game that appears to be sick. (Ron T.)

Action Point
Sickness and disease is a part of this world, but where did it come from? Jesus came so that we may have life, and have it to the full. The Devil came only to steal, kill, and destroy as reflected in John 10:10. "The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full (NIV)."

I have heard it said that God puts disease on people so they might change their ways or learn a lesson. To me that doesn't make any sense. Our father gives us good gifts, not sickness or disease as reflected in Matthew 7:9, "Which of you, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone (NIV)? When Jesus walked this earth, he healed a lot of people. I don't recall him ever refusing to heal anyone. The sick came to him in faith and were healed by faith.


Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
In your field dressing kit, make sure you have extra surgical gloves packed away and change them out every so often. They can get a little brittle in the cold weather and tear fairly easy. The long gloves that veterinarians use to pregnancy check cows work well. They slip over your coat sleeves and keep everything clean.

Over the years, I have heard thousands of sermons. I'll never forget the one about taking naps. During cowboy church the good old boy preacher said, "Sometimes the most spiritual thing you can do is take a nap!" (Tom H)

Action Point
Many times the preparation, packing, last minute responsibilities, and hundreds of miles driving to your favorite getaway can wear you out. Once you arrive and get settled in at your happy hunting grounds or your favorite stream brimming with trout, try taking a power nap. Fifteen minutes works for me, any longer and it backfires making me feel worse.


Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
If your camp has lots of pine needles, try making a good fluffed up pile. Put your sleeping bag on top and enjoy your power nap right under the trees. Be careful of sap that will drip down if there are broken branches above.

Never leave fish to find fish. We've heard that cliché a thousand times, yet we still do it. We catch a few, but become dissatisfied with the quality or quantity. We can do better. A life pursuing happiness without Christ is like this - constantly moving from one thing to another chasing earthly satisfaction. (Will D)

Action Point
God made you and me to seek contentment. However, it's not shiny with big tires, in stacks of dollar bills, with bigger horns, or with larger scales. It's found in Him. Don't keep running after earthly things. Seek contentment in Jesus Christ. "Delight yourself in the LORD and he will give you the desires of your heart, Psalms 37:4 (NIV)." Doing so, you will discover the real and everlasting contentment your heart desires.

Not only are instant hand sanitizers good to keep on your boat for killing water-borne germs, but it will also clean and shine used or stained hard plastic lures.

Thoughts
On a January winter weekend a friend and I went bass fishing on a popular southern Texas power plant lake. In the winter they are known for producing great fishing. The heated lake water is not affected by the outside temperature. A major cold front was approaching, but we thought we had plenty of time to get on the lake, catch some fish, and then get off before conditions became bad. Wrong thinking! We were at the opposite end of the lake from the launch ramp when the front blew in earlier than expected. High winds turned the lake into a churning ocean. Temperatures quickly dropped. We were in a bad situation.

We turned my 16' aluminum bass boat into the wind and waves and headed for the launch ramp. The only way to stay on top of the waves and keep from getting swamped was to run at full speed. Tackle boxes, fishing rods, and both of us were bouncing around as we battled our way up the lake. Only by the grace of God did we make it back to the ramp in one piece and without injury. (Tom B)

Action Point
As I remember that trip, my mind is called to the passage of Jesus calming the waters. He didn't calm the waters we were on, but He certainly protected us as we fought our way back to the launch ramp and safety.

Jesus is a calming affect in our whole life if we call for him. When things aren't going as planned or even expected, especially in today's world, know that we can call on His name. Read the Bible. Look for the many times Jesus is mentioned promising to take care of our needs, bringing calmness to our tough times.


Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
In the winter months be sure to get an accurate weather forecast before heading out on the water in a boat to fish. Fishing can be fantastic as the barometer drops. The chances for a disaster in the making also go up as dropping temperature, rain, snow, or high winds rake the water. It's not worth the chance. The fish will be there another day.

Thoughts
Moses was afraid to accept the challenge God gave him to lead the Israelites out of the bondage of Egypt. To prove to Moses and the rest of the Israelites that He was in charge, God told Moses to throw down his staff, which turned into a snake. Here is the tough part for me, He then told Moses to pick it up by the tail. Moses did, and the snake became the staff again. That staff was no longer a shepherd's staff, but an anointed tool for leading God's people to the Promised Land. (Bink G)

Action Point
God challenges us from time to time to leave our comfort zones, take a leap of faith, and obey his will. It would definitely take an act of God for me to pick up a snake by the tail. As anglers, we all have our favorite fishing spots; and we fish these spots 90 percent of the time. We rarely look at new water for fear of failure, especially when we have paying customers. Just the other day God challenged me to seek out a dear friend who was having family problems. Honestly, I did not want to do it. I wanted to stay out of it, but God burdened me to leave my comfort zone and talk to my friend about being a godly man and in doing what is right. My friend, a proud man, was very receptive to the discussion. I knew it was because God was there, leaning against the truck with us.


Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
Fishing on days when the weather is not the most conducive to catching makes us better anglers. We must seek out new water and read patterns and tides to find fish. In the process we become better fishers and add a few new coordinates to the GPS.

Make sure no one gets left out of God's generosity. Keep a sharp eye out for weeds of bitter discontent. A thistle or two gone to seed can ruin a whole garden in no time. (MSG)

Thoughts
Three hours deep into the interior of the snow covered mountains, I enjoyed the rare treat of being in God's country for the day. Far enough away, I thought that I would not see anyone. Hunting season was over and it was the middle of the day in the middle of the week. I was just out exploring. Imagine my surprise when I came across another human dressed in full camouflage with his hunting rifle.

I stopped and learned that he was "bird and varmint hunting". He then began a lengthy bitter diatribe that consumed the next half hour of my life. He was angry that the mountains we were occupying had been hunted out of deer, that the state of AZ used a drawing method for obtaining a hunting tag, that he seldom got drawn, that the current economy had cost him his job, and that he seldom had food to eat. He was just plain bitter. As I drove away I felt a wave of depression come over me that lingered far longer than the thirty minutes it had taken to go to seed. Boy did he just ruin my garden. Action Point
The author of Hebrews is not exactly known, however the message is clear. He is telling Hebrew Christians that Jesus is the Messiah and the way to salvation. He then gives advice for daily living: to follow Christ, not cling to their old ways, and to eliminate bitterness from their lives. I found it interesting that the scripture eludes that bitterness in one's life can lead to being left out of "God's generosity". Looking back now, it seems evident that this bitter man was not enjoying many of the blessings he could have. It may have been a direct result of a withholding of God's generosity.

Bitterness often is a result of hurt and pain. Hurts left untended fester into resentment and ultimately into bitterness. Remember Jesus heals all hurts. Turn it over to Him, forgive the offender, and let Him heal the pain before it goes to seed and ruins your whole garden.


Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
Never confront a suspected poacher. If possible observe from a distance and gather as much information as possible. Many states have a poacher's hotline, memorize it or keep it nearby and call from a safe location.

Thoughts
This past fall my dad, brother, my two older children, and I spent quite a bit of time hunting on one of our leases in the Ozark foothills. We setup the camper, but had no electricity or running water. We ate by campfire light, we cleaned our deer by hanging them from a tree limb, and we feasted on charcoaled hamburgers and soup. Night was utterly quiet. We were separated from the hustle and bustle of the world. We worked hard and played even harder. When the game warden stopped by to check our licenses, we were able to look him in the eye and enjoy his company. We stood honestly before him and as a result, were able to tell him about our relationship with God. It turned out that he was a Christian as well. I was glad that we were living a quiet and honest life out there. (Brian H.)

Action Point
My grandfather was not an educated man. He dropped out of school in the third grade to help raise crops and take care of his younger siblings. As an adult, he painted John Deere tractors and worked at a shoe factory to support his wife and six children. By the time I came along, he was retired and had settled down to raise cattle and chickens. Everyone around the county knew who he was, but he kept to himself. He was hardworking and honest. Late in life his brother quietly led him to the Lord while standing in his garden. As Christians, it is our responsibility to live a life of honor. We will give an account to God for what we do or not do with our lives. Visit 1 Thessalonians 4:11-12 again. Read it slowly and turn it over and over in your mind. Meditate on it and make it your life verse. Let's resolve to live lives that win the respect of outsiders and win them quietly to Christ.

Thoughts
In Arizona we are blessed with many days so clear that one can see from one end of our state to the other. After riding the ski lift on San Francisco Peaks, near Flagstaff, I was to see Mt. Lemon over 100 miles south just outside of Tucson. (Byron S)

Action Point
How big is our God? For mankind, God is hard for us to comprehend. Many of us want to downsize Him in order to better understand his ways. But He tells us that our ways are not His ways.

Rather than trying to downsize God, see Him for what He is. His handy work is all around us, especially in the outdoors. Be thankful and blessed by the fact that He gave His only Son to die for our sin so that ALL of our transgressions are removed from us. Just take hold of that, believe it, and give Him thanks. Rejoice in the fact that He is so big that we cannot comprehend. Romans 1:20 says, "For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities-his eternal power and divine nature-have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse (NIV)."

Thoughts
I love to fly, whether I'm at the controls or a professional. My pilot's license allows me to fly single-engine fixed-wing aircraft. Don't ask me about the time I got to fly a 747 Simulator, it wasn't pretty. Crash and burn, baby! Maybe I'll leave flying the big planes to the pros! On a fishing trip to Alaska I was constantly amazed at the sights from the window. Now, think with me. We're in a metal tube at 35,000 feet above the earth doing something that humans aren't supposed to be able to do, fly. We put our trust in the machine, the pilots, and the maintenance people that take care of that plane. The views are awe inspiring. I never get tired of looking at the tops of clouds. There are peaks and valleys and you can see where the wind currents have cut channels through them. When we enter those clouds, we can't see anything and sometimes the ride gets a little turbulent. Again, we have to trust the pilots and the machine. We don't even ask about the qualifications of either. We just assume that they will safely take us through the rough stuff. Talk about faith, it doesn't get any deeper than that. Right? (Cliff S)

Action Point
When we walk with God, we have to put our faith and trust in Him and His Holy Spirit, always. There are going to be times when we can't see where He's taking us and times when the ride will get rough. Those are times when, like Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, our faith will be tested. It may be when you get a bad report from the doctor, when something goes terribly wrong on a hunt and your very survival is uncertain, or when God has allowed you to prosper to see how you will handle what He's given you. There's a saying, "Character is tested when you're up against it". Well, guess what, God tests us. He's watching to see how we react to adversity, eo see what kind of character we possess, and to see if we really trust Him.

The founder of this website, Sportsmen's Devotional, always signs his letters with the acronym, "WIHP". The letters stand for "Walk In His Paths". Good advice when the road gets hard to see and maybe a little bumpy! Trust God that He will lead you through the rough stuff!

When booking with a guide, always check his references and those of his associates. You want to be sure that he will be able to get you there and back safely and hopefully put you onto the animals you're hunting.

Thoughts
I know I have written about David in the past, but just can't seem to get enough of him. David the sweet writer and singer of songs, David the poet; David the musician, and David the boy who grabbed a lion by his beard, struck him, and killed him! Wait a minute! Did you read that right? You bet you did! What a man! David did that when he was just a boy tending his father's sheep. No wonder he went on to be such a famous warrior. This guy was fearless! What was his secret? No secret at all! He comes right out and says, "The LORD who delivered me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear". He did not take credit for anything. He knew that apart from the Lord, he was nothing. Too bad Samson didn't learn that lesson earlier; his outcome might have been much different. Yes, we know that David had his share of sins. Terrible, horrible sins to boot! But even then he knew what to do, repent and take it to the Lord! "Against you - you alone - I have sinned," he said, Psalms 51:4a (HCSB). (Dave H)

Action Point
We need role models in our lives. We need to teach our children the right way to live. Yes of course we should always consider" What Would Jesus Do", WWJD, but we should also study about the great men of the Bible. They are put there for a reason. They are put there for us to learn from. Remember folks, these aren't just some tall stories told around the camp fire. These are gospel. What is recorded is actually what happened. David was not given any supernatural strength as Samson was given. He was given one thing, a heart for God. Pray that the Lord would give you this same heart, the same heart that was also given to our Lord. Your children can learn so much from studying the lives of these men. They will hopefully learn to draw from the strengths of these people and to avoid their weaknesses. More than anything else, they will know who to turn to and that they are no less of a man or woman for admitting their mistakes and falling on their faces in front of the Lord.


Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
David did not use a slingshot made out of surgical tubing like we have today. It can be fun project for you and the kids to construct one like he used. He would have taken two cords of leather that can easily be had from Tandy or any leather supply store (or make your own from your next deer). Even heavy duty shoe laces can be used. Take a piece of leather or cloth material about one inch wide and two or three inches long, punch a hole in each of the long ends of the cloth and attach one of the leather cord to each hole you have made. The cloth forms a pocket into which you place the stone or other object you wish to throw. Hold the two loose ends of the cords together in your hand and swing them over your head like you have seen Argentinean cowboys swing a bolo. Release the end of one of the cords and launch your projectile toward a safe target. A word to the wise: practice this in the wide open spaces till you get the hang of it! We don't want to break any windows or heads!

Thoughts
On a beautiful morning just before sunrise, we were elk and mule deer hunting in a very promising area. Our horses had just eased up to the edge of 50 acre plus three year old burn-out. We were glassing the clearing on the edge of the trees for about ten minutes when suddenly both horses stiffened, put their ears up, and were fully alert as they both craned their necks to look toward our left. From out of the trees in a ground eating trot came a huge male mountain lion about 50 yards away. He never slowed from that trot as he passed to the side and in front of us heading into the burn out. The big cat casually glanced at us but never broke stride. The horses, my hunting partner, and I watched in silence as the majestic feline cruised by. The entire pageant took less than a minute as he disappeared into the maze of burned and downed trees. (Marshall M.)

Action Point
Trials and temptations are with us always. Sometimes they seem to appear from out of nowhere. We can't always prepare for everything in life, but we can be prepared spiritually for these surprise attacks. An accountability and prayer partner or a mentor can give you the safety net for many of these situations. Only Jesus can give you the security you need to face all of the enemy's traps and pitfalls. With Christ as your personal savior, you have the power to be victorious even when facing spiritual lions.


Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
When you're in the woods, observe the habits of all the animals around you. Pets and livestock will almost always give you a warning or a heads up to other animals. Even birds and squirrels will raise an alarm about other wildlife in the vicinity.

Thoughts
Mackinac Island is a common stopping point for those vacationing in Michigan. Located out in the middle of Lake Huron, its old Victorian theme throughout the island prohibits motorized vehicle traffic. You either walk, ride bikes, or enjoy horse drawn carriages.

In summertime the island bustles with people on vacation. In the winter, it quiets to a few hundred people left to endure the cold. Adventurous winter folks will visit utilizing the "ice bridge". Separated from Michigan's Upper Peninsula by 2 miles of Lake Huron's freezing water, the temperatures are consistently low. The waters will completely freeze over enabling access from the Upper Peninsula by snowmobile, cross country skiing, or simple hiking on ice. The bridge may last a couple of weeks or a couple of months. There's nothing more exciting than crossing over the ice when you know that all that is below you is hundreds of feet of icy water. Your trip can only be achieved if the bridge holds. If not, your trip will end tragically! (Dave M)

Action Point
Spiritually, each of us has a location problem with God. We are living here on Earth in a world broken by sin. God, who cannot tolerate sin and who is completely holy, can't have sin in his presence. So how do we as broken people get access to God? The answer - Jesus! God knew that we needed a bridge to connect to Him. He sent his Son out of love to join an imperfect world to a perfect God. Jesus sacrificed his life as a bridge for us to cross over to heaven to our Father. Without Jesus, there is a huge chasm between God and us. Beauty is that God has made it very simple. All we have to do is repent of our sinful ways and accept His Son as our savior. Let me encourage you that there is God. If you have not accepted His Son as your savior - do so today. He is the bridge that will connect you to God. There is no other way!

If you are going to venture out onto ice, keep talking with locals about the ice conditions. Ice can change rapidly and develop fissures, gaps in the ice. Ice can pile up high causing a threat to snowmobilers going too fast for the conditions.

Thoughts
I slipped through the woods scanning ahead for a turn of an ear or a flicker of a tail. Then I saw the patch of white. Felt like I was walking on potato chips with every step as I slowly eased ahead. The closer I inched the better I could see the doe, bedded on the edge of thick cover. With the wind in my favor, I planned to sneak within 40 yards so I could make the shot. Suddenly there another head, this doe's fawn. I decided to not complete my stalk. There beside the doe covered in thick vines, briars, and saplings was an old log home piquing my interest. Its roof was gone, the windows broken, and trees were growing through the floorboards. The home was abandoned. (Dennis W)

Action Point
Lamentations speaks of God's judgment on his own people. They had turned their backs on him to worship other gods. God allowed the enemy to destroy the temple. For years it laid in ruins. Our choices can cause God to allow the enemy access into our lives. We can become just like the abandoned home overgrown with unnecessary distractions that choke out our faith. Keep your faith strong through prayer, Bible study, and serving others.

Sneaking through the woods after a heavy rain is a great way to see more game. Your footsteps are quieter and game is moving more.

Thoughts
I love being outdoors. It provides a great time for me to get away by myself, with family, or with friends and just chill. I do find time to be by myself. I need the solitude to think, pray, and sometimes just to get things off my mind. Jesus reminds us in this verse that it's okay to do this. In fact, it is quite necessary, especially for those who expend a lot of energy for the faith. (Don H)

Action Point
We need to take time to eat, not just food for our bodies, but food for our souls. Never feel guilty about planning free time outdoors. Just know that our Lord wants us to use that time to talk to Him, read about Him in His Word, and renew our strength in Him. Even a tiring hunting or fishing trip can be spiritually exhilarating when we dedicate part of that time to Jesus.


Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
Have a knife with a bone or antler handle? Renew the grip by soaking the handle in mineral oil for several hours then wipe off the excess. Baby oil will work, but it will leave a scent. Pure, unscented mineral oil is available at most pharmacies and general-type stores. Mineral oil does not absorb moisture from the air, will not turn rancid, will not harm metal, and is a good protective treatment for uncoated grips made from natural material.

Thoughts
Years ago standing at the old Sunset Point overlook, my sister and I observed a little donkey coming up out of the canyon below. He arrived at the fence begging for a handout. We also discovered the black stripe pattern on its back in the shape of a Cross. My father explained the Cross on its back was put there as a remembrance that our Lord Jesus rode on a donkey's back when He presented Himself as Lord of Lords and King of Kings. (Byron S)

Action Point
The day most of us call Palm Sunday is the day the "Triumphal Entry" took place in Jerusalem. On the Jewish calendar, it is the "10th of Nissan". That year it was the day before the Passover when all devout Jews were to present their "lambs of sacrifice" to the priest for inspection. That day he fulfilled prophecy when He presented himself to the multitudes. Jesus was the "spotless Lamb of Sacrifice for our sin". Remember this day, when it comes, what Jesus did for you and me. He gave Himself for the forgiveness of our sin. Not just the one you committed yesterday, but for every sin you or I have or ever will commit. Take time today to think about how awesome that is and give thanks to Him for all He has done for you.

Donkeys, burros, and mules all make great pack animals. If you have never packed, be sure you take time to learn the knots that are necessary to hold the pack together. A set of hand scales are also invaluable to make sure the load is balanced on the beast's back.

Thoughts
Turkey calls are fun to make and bring satisfaction. Making your call adds to your hunt. I make them for fun, for gifts, and for personal use. Start with a 4 inch square wood blank. Nip the corners at a 45° angle to save time on the lathe. Various gouges, abrasives, and other tools shape the wood into the desired pot. Check dimensions to ensure the surface will fit. Drill the holes, sand some more, and apply finishes. My maker's mark is applied before the parts are assembled and glued. Tune each call to the particular striker as some work better than others. After completion, the surface must be conditioned as well as the end of the striker. When all is finished, I use my creation to call in unsuspecting turkeys to the gun. The finished product becomes a treasure to be proud of. (Jackie M).

Action Point
Maybe God is tooling, remaking, or finishing you as I did the call mentioned above. Are you going through some pain right now? Maybe it's a loss, physical pain, emotional agony, mental anguish, or even depression. "Why?" is a common question. Asking this question does not indicate one is unspiritual or lacking in faith, but often accompanies one's struggle to understand.

God is shaping us to be like Jesus. He is remaking us, finishing us, and removing our rough edges. His Word tells us that he chastens every one he loves. "Because the Lord disciplines those He loves, Hebrews 12:6a (NIV)." If we remain under his discipline and cooperate through the times of pain, hurt, and discipline, we will become more like our Lord. In this world we will then be a better vessel for God to use in his work.

Buy or make quality calls. Think about what you have invested in weapons, clothes, time, travel and everything else to ensure quality hunts. Don't short change yourself by using inferior calls. Get the best you can afford. Most importantly, practice using them till you are consistently proficient.

Thoughts
The church needed a new roof and I was the fundraiser speaker. The fish fry was awesome. As usual, God used the evening to show how loving, merciful, and incredible he is. A lot of sportsmen and ladies were blessed, I included! Leave it to God to take a simple fish fry with humble souls under a leaking roof and show that he is everywhere for everyone. Great and Marvelous are your deeds, Lord God Almighty! (Jim C)

Action Point
The leaking roof reminded me of some previous outpost camps with extremely humble accommodations to say the least. The buildings barely seem to stand on their own while they protected us from the weather, contained our laughter, and created memories while we lived our adventure. Oh if those walls could talk, the fishing and hunting stories they could retell. In those simple accommodations, it is always easier to hear God's voice. It's a magnificent experience

True outpost cabins are extremely rustic in nature. Be ready for the lack of necessities. It is bare bones living. Always pack what I call "packables", extra band aids, Neosporin, and extra toilet paper. Planning ahead always helps you to be prepared.

Thoughts
The trail had been an easy one to hike in beautiful Baxter County, AR. As I topped the rocky ridge, an old wooden bridge challenged me below. The trail wound down the hill into a gorge packed with brush and an assortment of junk that had been washed up with the water from the lake below. The old crossing didn't look secure and encouraged me find a path around. There was no other way around or across without trusting the ancient bridge. I took a deep breath and stepped out on faith. (Brian H.)

Action Point
The world encourages us to believe a wide assortment of things about eternal life. Many buy into the belief that if we live a good life, God will "let us into heaven". Others believe that we simply cease to exist once death comes. Friends, we WILL live forever either in heaven or hell; both are very real places. Thankfully, God has made provision for us to cross the deep gorge between Him and us to avoid hell. He bridged that gap with the cross and the shedding of blood through Jesus Christ. If anyone tells you that there is any way to heaven other than accepting Jesus' atoning work at Calvary, they are misleading you or they simply do not understand the truth. There is only one way to heaven and only one way to God the Father. That is through the narrow way of faith in Jesus Christ. Do you know Him? Step out on faith. The cross is one bridge that will stand forever and you MUST cross it to obtain eternal life with God in heaven.


Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
When approaching a stranger to ask for permission to hunt or fish their land, wear your nice clothes with shirt tucked in. Be polite even if you get declined. Remember, whether or not you get permission to hunt or fish is beside the point. You are to represent God and the Christian outdoor community well, regardless of the outcome of your visit.

Easter. Springtime. Arguably the best time of the year to be outdoors. Fish are spawning, flowers are blooming, and life is in full stride. But what season are you in? Are you still in winter; dormant, cold, and reluctant to go outside? Perhaps you are already in summer; fuming over something - easily angered. Maybe you're convinced your life is falling apart; a seemingly endless and tumultuous down-hill spiral like leaves falling from the autumn trees. (Will D)

Action Point
Jesus paid our debt on the cross that day. Three days later He was resurrected; a miraculous event symbolizing the new life God offers us. Good Friday

Thoughts
Several years back I was helping a friend, a professional guide, on a desert bighorn sheep hunt in northern Arizona. The area around Lake Mead is big, rough, mountainous country and has a good population of sheep. The client had finally scored, killing a sheep on top of a large plateau (a plateau is a flat top mountain). I was with two other guys at the foot of the mountain when they made the kill. We immediately started up the mountain to the hunters to help pack the animal out. As we reached the top, we saw my friend with the entire sheep carcass, head and all, on his backpack. He could have gotten it out alone, but he was sure glad to see us and welcomed our help. In a few minutes we had the animal quartered and we all experienced the weight of the animal on our shoulders as we started down the mountain back to camp. (Cliff S)

Action Point
It's Good Friday and Jesus was willingly carrying the cross to the hill where He was to be crucified. He did this without reservation because He knew that by doing so He would take on Himself the weight of the sins of the world, and by so doing provide the only way of forgiveness for those sins. My sins, your sins, and the sins of all mankind, they were all carried by Jesus with the cross.

Simon was pressed into service that day and experienced the weight of Jesus' wooden cross on his shoulders. Simon experienced physically what Jesus had to carry, but, there's no way that Simon could have carried the other weight that Jesus carried, the weight of the world's sins. You see, Simon wasn't the Son of God. Simon wasn't the Savior. Simon was a bystander that was drafted into doing what he did.

Jesus came from heaven on a mission from the Father. A mission that would offer to all mankind the gift of forgiveness for sin and a relationship with His Father, God, if we'd only believe in Jesus. Knowing this, we now have a choice. Will we let Jesus carry our sins or will we carry them ourselves. By letting Jesus carry our sins, we will experience life eternal with Him and the Father. If we choose to carry them ourselves, we will die to God and be separated from Him for all eternity. Choose life! Choose it now! Pray to God and confess your sins, your need for forgiveness, and your faith in Jesus. God will save you if you accept the free gift of His forgiveness and grace.

Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
When selecting a backpack consider a couple of things. What are you going to be doing with the pack? My experience has been that when packing animals, it is easier on an external frame pack where there are places to hang and tie things. Also, go to the store and try on several packs to be sure you find one that fits well and feels comfortable. When you strap on a hundred pounds or so of weight, the pack has to fit correctly or you're going to hurt.

Thoughts
Gambel quail are the most common variety found in the AZ desert. They're very interesting and challenging to hunt. It's tough to hunt them with dogs because they don't typically hold for a point. When they sense danger they run until they flush, most often together as a covey, very fast, and low to the ground. I've watched some very good shot gunners go home talking to themselves because of this quail's elusive abilities. I know because I'm one of those hunters! I've made lots of excuses for my misses. The most common being, "Did you see that? It was a miracle! That dead bird just flew right over that ridge!" All the experienced Gambel hunters in the group will normally chuckle and agree with me. They know the feeling of a clean miss on an easy bird. But, there is a little known characteristic of these birds that you can use to your advantage. If you can rush the covey and get them to scatter as individuals or pairs, they will then hold for the dogs to work them. I've not only experienced it, but have watched other hunters employ some rather hysterical tactics to get these birds to scatter rather than flush as a group. (Cliff S)

Action Point
The crucifixion until the resurrection, that's how long Peter had to think about his fulfillment of this prophecy by Jesus that he would deny Him. While preparing for this writing, I was reading today's scripture and thinking of what I would have said and done that fateful night in Jerusalem. It's easy, oh so easy, to sit in the comfort of our churches and tell each other that we'd die for Jesus, just like the disciples did that evening, and then go out into the world and deny Him. How do we deny Jesus? Well, maybe it's when we see a person in need and don't stop to help. Perhaps it's when we speak ill of somebody, OK, we gossip about them. Sometimes it's the inappropriate example we set for our kids, or the non-loving way we treat our spouse. Sadly, it may also be when we have an opportunity to share our faith and instead keep silent. All of these are ways that we can deny Christ by not loving others the way He commanded. I'm sure that Peter had a long three days to think about what he'd done. Maybe we should stop and reflect on our own actions before we condemn Peter. We may be more like him than we think. I hope so, because, you see, a few days later Jesus reinstated Peter, and he did great and mighty things for the Christian faith. That's the Peter I want to be like!

After you've flushed a covey of gambel quail, give the dogs a few minutes to work the area around where they flushed. Quite often there's a single or two holding tight that the dogs might find for you.

Thoughts
One of my favorite things in AZ is summer thunder storms. Wow! Talk about thunder and lightning! My son and I were camped out one evening when one started. The lightning flashes and thunder claps were three to five seconds apart for almost three hours. Along with the thunder and lightning came about three inches of rain. That's a lot of rain for anywhere, but especially here in AZ! The rain and thunder kept me awake for a long time that night. Ever try to sleep in one of those storms? It's not going to happen, not until the storm is over. But, just as quickly as it came on, the storm quit, the quiet set in, and it was a very peaceful rest of the evening. It always amazes me how violent the storm can be and how quiet and peaceful it can become in a very short period of time. If you've never had it happen to you, it's hard to comprehend. You go from violent storm to quiet peacefulness in just a few minutes. It's simply an amazing thing to experience. (Cliff S)

Action Point
No doubt the disciples were experiencing their own storm of epic proportions. Their leader, Jesus, had been arrested, tortured, and crucified. Then on top of it all on this first day of the week, Easter, the body had disappeared from the grave and an angel had told them that Jesus had risen from the dead. They had heard Jesus speak of all of this in advance, but didn't really understand what He was saying. "From that time on Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, chief priests and teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life, Matthew 16:21 (NIV). "

They were huddled in a private room hiding from their enemies when suddenly Jesus stood in their midst and said, "Peace be with you!" Yeah right! I would have asked who let Him in; I didn't hear anybody knocking or the door open. You know what, the door didn't open. Jesus came from out of nowhere and was suddenly among them. When they got over the shock and suddenness of His appearance, saw the nail prints in His hands and the spear mark in His side, they rejoiced that He had, indeed, risen, He was alive, and they believed in Him.

Because of their belief, they did have peace. You can, too. You see, the only way to have peace in the midst of your storms of life is to have faith in Jesus. Jesus never promised us a storm free life. You'll still have storms. But you'll also have the peace that only Jesus can give. Peace that passes all understanding. I know, because, you see, I've been there, too! If you'll give Jesus a chance, He will change your life. Receive Him today and His promise of peace!

Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
The power of lightning amazes me. I've seen many ponderosa pine trees that are literally blown in half mid way up from the power of a lightning strike. If you're caught out in a storm, do not seek shelter under a tall tree. Those deer or cattle bones didn't get there by accident, they were electrocuted. Seek shelter under a small or medium size tree or lay flat out in an open area. If you feel the hair standing up on your arms or neck be advised that you are the next target for the lightning. Drop to the ground immediately and hopefully the strike will hit somewhere else.

Thoughts
Lake Erie, a massive force, can present adverse weather and fishing conditions on a winter trip. When you live as far away as I do, you want to know as much as you can about the weather and conditions. I scour the fishing reports on the internet. I've learned to be very discerning when I read these. We all know those reports are designed to help us determine where the fish are biting. However they're often misused for the opposite purpose, to discourage us away from where the fish are biting!

Frustrating and deceitful! Who can you trust? I love how Proverbs 3:5 starts, "Trust in the Lord." No worries about the source. He is trustworthy. Then Solomon elaborates in verse 6 as you walk day by day acknowledging Him, he'll show you the way to go. Fishing forums must always be read carefully since we can't trust every source. Thankfully, our Heavenly Father never fails to deserve our faithful trust. (Matt F)

Action Point
How is God asking you to trust Him? Where are you prone to doubt His Word, His plan, or His timing? Renew yourself in the truth of Proverbs 3:5, "Trust in the Lord with all your heart."

Network to find reliable sources on the internet and elsewhere for forecasts and fishing reports. A personal connection you make with someone at a local bait shop or fly shop can make the difference between a wasted trip or a great day on the water.

Thoughts
I was in my stand on a cool, clear, and crisp November afternoon. It was the perfect day to be hunting whitetail. The rut was in full gear and the possibility of getting a trophy buck was high, plus it was a great opportunity to get away from the stresses of life. The monster eight-point appeared out of nowhere. I began to focus on the deer's rack. In a matter of moments, over twenty years of practice and training flew out the window. I already had the deer mounted and hanging over my bed. The only thing left to do was to convince the wife that this was the best spot to hang my first trophy Michigan whitetail. Armed with only two arrows, I released my first shot into the mud at his feet. The second shot flew just over his back. I waited until he sauntered out of sight and climbed down to retrieve my first arrow. He returned and presented me with an easy thirty yard shot. Smack! I hit a small sapling.

It took me a week to get over the pain of missing this buck, but it gave me time to reflect on why I had missed three times. I realized that I wasn't focused on the right thing, those intangibles that had made me a successful hunter over the years. I was too focused on the trophy and not on the hunt. (Mike T)

Action Point
We can learn a lot about life through our hunting experiences. A week later, I was fortunate to get a second chance (fourth chance) at the trophy eight- point. This time my focus was clear and right on target. The result was victory and redemption. What is your life focus? Are you serving two masters? Christ says it best, "You cannot serve both God and Money."


Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
Make sure you have more than two arrows in your quiver. You never know how many opportunities you may get. Who knows, it may even be with the same animal.

"And now what are you waiting for?"

Around this time of the year many anglers take inventory of their fishing equipment. Some call it spring cleaning-sorting out different lures by type, color, and size; replacing fishing line on reels; checking rod guides for broken or missing ceramic inserts-just a general cleaning, replacement and reorganizing of your fishing tackle.

If the fishing season hasn't already begun where you live, it soon will be prime time to be out on the water. Reorganizing fishing tackle while you are out fishing is too late. (Tom B)

Action Point
"Get up, be baptized and wash your sins away, calling on his name." Just as we get ready for this year's fishing action, take stock of your life. What needs to be thrown out, bad habits maybe? What needs to be repaired in your life...broken relationships or promises? What needs to be cleaned up, your thought process? Maybe you need a complete "restart". Throw everything out, start over, reorganize your priorities, or maybe even an acceptance of Jesus as your personal savior.

Remember that Jesus Christ is the master of life reorganization. Trust in him to help restore your life. Clean up your personal tackle box.


Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
Inspect hooks and split rings on your different lures. Check for rust, especially if your baits are used in saltwater. Run a hook sharpening stone on the hooks to make sure they can provide a good, solid hook set when the fish strike. Don't forget the split rings that many lures have. I have had split rings break at the most inopportune times.

Thoughts
Patrolling some back country trails, I came across a wide swath of tracks that crossed in front of me. As I continued on, I discovered a large herd of elk, about 100 head of cows, calves, spike bulls, and a few rag horn bulls. Elk, as do most big game animals, herd up in the winter months. Being in a herd offers many benefits, one of the most important is safety in numbers. Anyone who has ever tried to put the sneak on a large herd of elk knows how difficult it can be with all those sets of eyes scanning the area. Any little shift in the wind can carry your scent directly to the nostrils of a herd member, who will immediately bark out the warning signal to the rest. Their God given herd instinct serves them well. (Ron T)

Action Point
I have heard people say, "The only church they need is to be outside in God's creation. That's where they feel the closest to God." I sure can't argue with that. What they are missing out on is the opportunity to meet up with fellow believers, to come together as a herd, to worship God, to grow spiritually, to give encouragement to others, and to receive encouragement. There are so many benefits that we receive when we are together. Finding a good bible based church and being a member of God's herd is a step in the direction of becoming mature in Christ. "As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another, Proverbs 27:17 (NIV)."


Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
A 12 inch chunk of dental floss tied on a stick makes a nice wind direction devise. You can carry it in your pocket. If you're hunting from a ground blind or a tree stand, you can tie the floss to a nearby tree branch. Remember never use the scented floss.

Thoughts
While visiting my son in Florida, we went surf fishing along the gulf coast. Occasionally, we would catch whiting, pompano, redfish, blues, and Spanish mackerel. One day a stranger approached and visited for at least an hour. Before he left, Dave, a christian with the gift of hospitality, invited us to go fishing in his boat. Our trip turned out to be a great experience. We caught about 75 sand trout and a few black drum along the rubble of a hurricane damaged bridge. When the pelicans noticed all the fish that were being caught, they tried to join us for a free lunch. They actually surrounded the boat and you had to be protective when you pulled the fish out of the water. Between catching fish, observing the pelicans, and assisting in driving the boat, my grandson had an unforgettable day. (Tom L)

In Matthew 9:37 Jesus says, "The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few." (NIV) Attracting the pelicans to our harvest illustrated a good point about attracting workers for Christ.

Marion Jacobsen, in the book, Saints and Snobs, writes strong but true words: "If any group Christians who claim to believe and practice all God has said in His Book will face up to their personal responsibility within the family of Christ, and to the real needs of Christians around them, their church will impress its community with its shinning goodness of God's love- to them and among them. Such a transformation would do more to ATTRACT others to Jesus Christ than to any house to house canvass, evangelistic campaign, or new church facility. People are hungry for acceptance, love, and friends and unless they find them in the church they might not stay there long enough to become personally related to Jesus Christ. People are not persuaded, they're ATTRACTED. We must be able to communicate far more by what we are than what we say."

Before buying live bait to use when jig fishing, try some of the Berkley Gulp baits. They work great, last a long time, and you don't have to rebait as often.

Thoughts
Each spring I begin my scouting for the next fall. It is a great time to be in the woods seeing where the game was the previous fall and you don't have to worry about disrupting their regular routine. You really figure out where and how they evaded you the previous year. A couple years ago I found the ultimate buck bedding area. The place was torn up with beds, trails, rubs, and sign. I even found a really nice shed. In studying how to hunt this spot, it was really difficult. There wasn't a way to access this spot without announcing I was there, which is why I'm sure the hunted hung out there. Everything would have to work out perfectly for me to be able to hunt this spot. As I was thinking about this I was reminded of how different God is. He has taken away all the barriers, tells us if we earnestly seek him he will reward us, and we will find Him. Wow. (Ross G)

Action Point
This verse in Romans is in the middle of what is referred to as the Hall of Fame of Faith. It lists tons of stories about Old Testament people who put their faith in God and were rewarded for it. The reward didn't always come easy or instant, but they were following something they believed in so they persevered. They didn't stop with simply seeking and finding God, they served and followed Him. I pray you choose do to the same.


Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
Early spring and late winter before green up is the best time to scout for the following fall. You can follow trails and discover where bedding, staging, and feeding areas are that will help you in choosing the best stand locations. When you select your stand site this time of year make sure you cut huge shooting lanes otherwise they will be gone in the fall. In the spring it is hard to make them too big. The good thing is you don't have to worry about spooking the animals.
