Fella's; I've got a set of Dillon .223 dies, a Redding .223 neck sizer die, a case gauge, and a little problem. The situation is I'm sitting on a fair number of .223 brass that's been fired in max chamber and shows long in the case gauge. The problem is my Dillion sizer die won't bump the shoulder back enough to pass the gauge. And yes, I've got it screwed in as far as it'll go. The question is; does anybody know of a die that will fer sure, fer sure, bump the shoulder back? With times the way they are, I do not want to dump this brass if I don't have to. 900F ------------- Birth certificate!? He don't need no steenkink birth certificate!! |

CB, If I understand the problem correctly your die is too long? Why not grind the shell holder a little thinner or shorten the die? I could see why you wouldn't want to gring the die but shell holders are cheap enough. If you do set the shoulder back won't you have headspace problems with the rifle? I've got a set of Lyman SB .223 and an RCBS X Die. Send me a half dozen brass and I'll size them and send them back to see if these'll do it. Rocky; No, that's not it at all. The used brass is too long & need the shoulder set back to headspace properly. The Dillon die has been set as deep as possible, but isn't able to bump the shoulder back. Grinding a Dillon shellholder isn't in the cards, they're not cheap. The used cases, before or after sizing, will not clear the gauge. So, I'm on the search for a new gauge that will bump the shoulder back. I'm trying to wrap my head around this one. The overall length is OK but the shoulder is too long? Normally the die squeezes the brass and the neck grows as if being extruded and is then trimmed to size but you can't get your die to do it? I imagine the stuff won't work in your AR but can you close the bolt on your bolt action? DD ------------- Endeavor to persevere. |

Thought you had a manual press also CB? I've used that "thin" shell holder trick when doing wild cats. My Rcbs holders are cheap. Would the Dillion size die fit in your o press and then use a cheapy shell holder? |
