I recently joined this forum, and would like to hear from anyone who has hunted area 417 in the Montana breaks.  I drew a cow elk tag this year, and have not hunted this area before.  Any tips are appreciated.
I have hunted 410, but 417 was a second choice and I drew it.  I see there is plenty of block management there, but don't know anything else about this area.
Thanks
Frank

hi, frank -

i haven't hunted for elk there, but i have hunted for antelope near there. it was only once and due to decent luck it was only a one-day trip. here are some general thoughts; i wish i could be more specific and i am sure that someone will come along with more details.

in general, there is a lot of public land and if you go to http://fwp.mt.gov - fwp.mt.gov ; you will be able to download maps with govt land as well as block management sections, which are a huge help. should be plenty of opportunties as there was a lot of govt or BMA land. the maps at FWP can provide specifics. don't be afraid to ask landowners; most of them will say no due to previous arrangements with other hunters, but quite a few will say yes. don't overlook school sections.

great country; pack for cold mornings and hot afternoons! take plenty of film/memory for the camera and keep an eye out for other hunters. there will be some out there, but as i remember it isn't TERRIBLY crowded - you shouldn't be tripping over other hunters, even on opening day.

Thanks, I did find a source for some decent maps today in Billings.  The Zortman BLM map is pretty poor.  But a survey shop will make a map from GPS software that gets down to the finest detail.  They can map by such detail as sections.  Then print it for you.  Pretty neat.
Thanks again, and good hunting this fall.
Frank
