to all -

as you know, one of our members, TimberGhozt, is serving in iraq and in the middle of the real shit over there. he is carrying on a noble tradition going back over 230 years, laying his life on the line in defense of freedom for those who cannot fight for themselves.

he has received many emails and PMs wanting to know what he wants or needs. gene would very much like to relay his thanks to all the members of both the BSB and the HB who have asked for what he needs and who have expressed a desire to do something to help him. in his words, "I appreciate it, my wife and family appreciates it, the civilians' lives I am charged with protecting appreciate it and my brothers who ride the MSRs looking for a fight appreciate it." gene has said that he's pretty much got everything he needs, but a few of us discovered that there is one thing that he really could use to help make sure he and his boys get home safely.

for those who want to do something for him, he needs a good pair binocs to keep with him for spotting IEDs. Gene needs them for countless hours of staring at the sides of the road looking for IEDs - also when they stop to verify that something is indeed an IED rather than trash, which is everywhere. They also just might come in handy for QRF when he is in a position to take out a sniper.

he needs something that will stand up to constant vibration, heat, body sweat on them and other such rough treatment. we've done some research and have determined that a pair of Steiners would probably fit the bill very nicely. here's a link to a web page that will tell you about them:

http://www.steiner-binoculars.com/binoculars/military/military.html - http://www.steiner-binoculars.com/binoculars/military/milita ry.html

i have ALWAYS been very proud of the fact that the greatest thing separating BSB from the rest of the internet rabble is that WE TAKE CARE OF OUR OWN. in spite of any goofy arguments that we get into over savages, magnums and the threat of methane from cow pies, we pull together when a member is in need.

we all know what is going on over there, and we know that IEDs are the biggest killer of our troops who are engaged in the war on terror. if you've got some spare cash, please consider contributing to this very worthy cause, and show AGAIN that we truly are a family of sportsmen.

anyone interested can PM me here or at the HB, or can email me at deltaforce_iktomi@yahoo.com.

that is all.

gene - my wife hates it when i spend money (although it never stops here from going shopping and buying shoes?), but on this one, she's in full 100% support.

also, my mother asked me to pass along her thanks to you for what you and your boys are doing over there. i know that the times are difficult and that talk is cheap and, but you all have a lot of support!

ok, guys - here's the scoop.

to anyone who wants to contribute:

1) if you haven't already, send me a PM (even if you reply to this thread) so that i can keep track of everyone in that venue.

2) i've got an address set up where funds can be sent and collected.

3) when we get enough, the binocs will be purchased and shipped to gene in iraq.

4) if we collect funds that go over the cost of purchasing and shipping, then we will either:

    a) bump up the purchase to a "better" model of equipment

    or

    b) use it got get gene a few other things that might come in handy over there.

any questions, ask them here on this thread or PM me.

thanks to all, and take care -

ron

hey, guys -

i posted gene a message yesterday giving him several options and asking him what binocs he thought would work best for what he needs to do. he said that all else being equal, the tactical mil 10x50s would work best for him, but he didn't want to be picky.

with that in mind, i think we ought to set that model as our goal and work toward that. i am confident that we can raise the funds.

TAZ,.. just got your PM tonight,... $$ to be sent out to the address you gave on Monday the 6th.

Personally I'd think 10X40's as a minimum power wise,.. another thing to think about is the weight of the glasses. Don't want them to be like a anchor. Those guys have enough weight to lug around as it is. Maybe a bino strap system too,..Just a thought.

I remember all the crap I was suppose to lug around,.. wound up stashin' alot of it most times out and took just the essentials.

The 10x50 Military R model is the one with the range finding reticule.

The 10x50 Military 210 is the one without the range finding retical.

http://www.opticsplanet.net/steiner-10x50-military-marine.html - http://www.opticsplanet.net/steiner-10x50-military-marine.ht ml

Just a thought here, may need to ask if the one with or without the range finding retical is preferred. The retical can get in the way sometimes when trying to view objects.

hey guys -

muleskinner - check your PMs.

as for the price, we've got one source that can get them to us for a good price, plus tax and shipping. at the present time, we are 99% confident of our funds. it looks like we're going to have enough when the last of the contributions roll in, with some left over for any unforeseen circumstance or perhaps to get TG some extra equipment that he might need.

a couple of ideas that were batted around were an extra pair of binocs for the guy who is watching TG's back or perhaps a good tactical knife, just in case.

stay tuned for other details as they arrive, and thanks to all!

TO ALL -

we are officially over the top and on gene's behalf i would like to thank each and every person who has helped out with this. we are going to get the binocs out to gene, and with the extra funds we will put together a nice package for him with whatever else he might need.

an army ranger who builds tactical knives (i'll get the website to y'all soon) has offered to donate a one to gene at absolutely no cost. when i get the website, i think it would be great if we could trhow a little business his way!

when final contributions are in, i'll post the numbers with an accounting of where everything went. thanks to all, and if there are any questions or comments, please let me know.

update -

as everyone knows, we have taken in a LOT beyond the actual cost of the binocs. with the extra funds, i have taken the liberty of using 20$ in order to purchase two books for gene and/or anyone else in his unit who may benefit from them. the books are the US Army/Marine Corps Counterinsurgency (COIN) Manual and a US Army field manual written in 1943 titled: "Instructions for US Servicemen in Iraq"

after doing quite a bit of research on these books, i am convinced that they will prove very useful to gene and anyone else who reads them. i should receive the books at the same time as the binocs (which have been ordered) and the tactical knife, so they and will all be shipped to gene in iraq together.

for information on the ww2 field manual, http://www.baitshopboyz.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=13022&PN=1 - click here .

that is all.

update:

book, knife and field manuals ( http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0226841707/ref=olp_product_details/104-4071016-3216718?ie=UTF8&seller= - COIN manual and reprint of 1943 "instructions for american servicemen in iraq" ) should be arriving here this week, with the harness (donated by an australian member of AR)  expected not too long after; i will box them all together with a few other things i have been collecting and will ship them to gene. donated funds continue to come in, and i will be contacting those who contributed about what to do with the surplus funds.

some suggestions from people have been:

*donation to a soldier/marine-related charity in gene's name

*a 2nd pair of binocs for whomever is watching gene's back

*an extensive collection of books, magazines etc.

*body armor and/or helmet (providing that something better than GI issued is available)

*recreational items and hard-to-get items such as good coffee, etc.

*reserving surplus funds until the holidays and sending a big care package for gene and his boys

there have been others, but i am at work and need to be getting back to it. y'all get the idea and any other suggestions will be appreciated.

my continuing thanks and appreciation to all who have shown moral support and financial support. i've received PMs and other messages of encouragement from many, many members and even from some places i wouldn't have expected. i am grateful to all.

update - today i received the two field manuals mentioned earlier. i won't be able to go through the COIN manual until after work this evening, but the 1943 guide to iraq is very interesting. after skimming through it i can say that it certainly would have been valuable in 2003.

it serves as an introduction not only into iraq, but also into middle eastern and muslim culture. it puts the information forward in an easy-to-understand and forthright manner that is accessible to anyone and is in some ways more relevant today than it was in 1943:

Quote you aren't going to iraq to change the iraqis. just the opposite. we are fighting this war to preserve the principle of "live and let live." maybe that sounded like a lot of words to you back home. now you have a chance to prove it to yourself and others. If you can, it's going to be a better world to live in for all of us.

Tash,

I saw an episode of some news magazine on TV about Dragon Skin Armor, if that's the one with the smal scales.  It tested much more effective by at least one independent lab, and was tested again for the report.  Word is the army brass downplayed their testing results to award the contract to a preferred supplier, safety of the troops notwithstanding.  I don't know if that's entirely accurate, but from the test I witnessed on TV, the stuff stopped bullets better, and left no critical areas exposed like what they are currently using.  Also, it seems the CIA, private security forces, and some high level military officers are wearing the Dragon Skin.  It's heavy, and the army says it doesn't hold up well to heat.  Here's a link:

http://www.strategypage.com/htmw/htinf/articles/20070814.asp x - http://www.strategypage.com/htmw/htinf/articles/20070814.asp x

Maybe we outta jus' get another grunt a pair of Steiners.

I saw the same show as Mule did.  The stuff looked pretty good.  I don't think Uncle Sam is allowing the troops to wear it as it isn't GI - gotta keep uniformity and such.  Still, I'd bet that more than one commander turns an eye to it if someone has one on.

I'd just wait to see what Timber or grunt X needs and go from there with the additional funds.

It's my understanding that the Dragonskin armor is very expensive.  Something like $7,000.00 for one person.  Maybe a military contract would bring the price down?  Hell, it'd more likely make it go up!

Hey fella's long time no see.  I'm piching in too - how about a stabilizing mechanism for those binoc's?  the roads over here suck ass and are potholed to make New York look smooth as a babys' butt.  Yeah, I'm back in Iraq, too, but this time I'm a CIV.  I haven't forgot the gear everyone sent me last time And I'm damn sure not gonna be left out on giving back - let me know what I gotta do to help Tas

Oh, and I'm not to sure about how the army handles outside procurment of body armor.  Not to squash a great Idea, but it might screw up Life insureance disbursement - Heaven FORBID - or some other Army beurocratic bullshit.

Here's a way to understand the heat over here - preheat your ovan to 400, get a fan & turn it on full blast, then, with the fan inches from your face, open the ovan door and stick your head with fan still in your face inside.

That's out in the open air.

Timber's trucks he rolls around in...  multiply above said sensation by, i don't know, 100?  And he & his are subjected to this for hours on end.  How about some cooling aparatuses - personal or area - able to fit in a vehicle, but cannot alter the vehicle wiring.  Find that & we'll have done more than anything

Not anymore Mule, for some reason the military started to encourage it's members not to smoke - the newer vehicles don't have lighter sockets.

That being said, I've seen some pretty ingenious additions of sockets into said vehicles - not leagle, mind you.  oh, and the vehicles tend to run higher VDC systems than normal vehicles.  I'm not a ground mech. so I'm not sure what the electrics are, but the helos run 28 VDC / 115 VAC @ 400 Hz.

I know the heat you're going thru spent about 3 yrs at a SAC base near Sidi Slimane French Morocco, North Africa in the early 50's w/o any coolers or a/c had sirocco storms off of the Sahara Desert with 140 degree temps and blowing sand. In the intro USAF brochures it said that it was a Med climate like Calif that was pure BS .

Sounds like some electrical wire and fans would be the way to go.  Sorry to say that I'd be against anything air-conditioner like.  Too rough on the conditioning of a soldier to sleep in 72 degree barracks and then go outside all day in 130 degree temp's.  Plus there's the additional concern about powering such an A/C device.  Fans are easy and I've seen them in HMMVs, Abrams and APC's during my stint with Uncle Sam.  So long as some hardass commander or motor pool NCO doesn't raise hell, small clip fans can be downright 5-Star accomodations for a field grunt.  Sure beats the heck out of sleeping in the open on a poncho!  Just some thoughts.  I still think we oughtta get word from those who are there and what they request before proceeding.

hey guys -

sorry for being out of the loop all weekend.

this idea with the fans sounds like it might be just the way to go. let me do a little checking and see what i can come up with. i have an idea.....

also, the last piece of equipment (2nd harness for binocs) arrived over the weekend. ready for boxing and shipping and if my idea pans out, might also have some ways to cool gene and his boys down a bit.

will keep you all posted!

garou - give me a day or two and i'll get in touch with you via PM for a reply to the ones you sent me!

On top of it, as usual, tas.

Hey mountain, I uderstand you line of thought with the air conditioning, but considr this...  weather they're (Soldiers) are sleeping in tents or C.H.U.'s (Mini three room trailers - each room having it's own outside door & sealed from the other rooms), they have airconditioning.  Because of the heat, even at a conditioners lowest setting inside temp is 80-85 deg. F.  Still a severe temp difference, yes, but not hypothermic.

I don't know how you did it in the '50's, I can't sleep for shit when the power's out - something about laying in a puddle of sweat after ten minutes just curdles my stomach.

Hey fellas.I am off for a few hours and figured I would catch up on my internet time some.I am living in a mobile home deal that has three seperate rooms.I share a room with another guy a Corporal who is squared away and not a pig.It isn`t too bad.We have a window unit ac that keeps it cool in here and I have a tv that gets 9 channels of afn cable.I have a coffee pot and workin on gettin a small fridge.
Outside though it is still hot and in a HMMWV even with ac on its farking hot, especially for the driver. Our ac doesn`t work worth a shit in our HMMWV anyways but at least as the gunner I can get some air/wind while we`re rolling.
Garou is right, imagine the hottest day you`ve ever seen back home, then a 40 mile an hour wind blowing and add 20 degrees to it.Thats what it is like.I have gotten half assed used to it but it is still a bitch with body armor on.Armor makes it nasty and keeps the sweat locked in between your clothes and the armor.
Anyways, glad to be able to talk to you guys again.

Hey Gene,

Sorry we didn't link up yeasterday, maybe if there's a little more fore warning I can plan to take the next day off (I.E. stay up later).  BTW, I understand 'bout no warning - OPSEC & all.

As for your fridge, the PX here has a few 220V LG minni fridges.  The kind you'd find in a hotel room or under a counter.  If you'll get me a DHL or FED EX addy for you, I'll pick one up & send it to ya.  I have one - works great - and CB knows what kind of lock works in it (Put one on mine).  I can get a case of Monsters, a case of Starbucks DoubleShot, a 12pk of starbucks frappacino's, and a 12 pack of soda in mine with a little room left over.  Let me know.

to all -

we finally got all items in place, boxed up and ready
to ship. here's what part of your donations have bought
gene:

a) a pair of kick-ass steiner binocs for use on
missions

b) two binocualr harnesses designed to take the weight
off his neck

c) the field manual: instructions for US servicemen in
iraq

d) the COIN (counterinsurgency) field manual

e) a pretty wide assortment of several varieties of
good coffees (i told gene to try them all, trade or
give away what he doesn't like (might make him popular
with the locals), and let us know what he does like -
we'll get more for him).

f) a coffee grinder

g) a shitload of corn bread mix (another guy on another
site is sending him a shitload of chili fixin's, so it
seemed like a good idea to get him some corn bread!)

h) a shitload of hard candies for gene and his guys and
for handing out to the kids they see.

in addition, a member of another site has donated a
combat knife that he had made (www.rangerknives.com),
and there have also been separate donations of an
additional 5 lbs. of damn good coffee, a case of
oatmeal (assorted flavors) and a case of hot chocolate
mix.

finally, my mother, sister, wife and youngest son have
donated a veritable shitload of small beanie-baby style
stuffed animals and toys. i used this as packaging
material and also so gene could hand them out to local
kids.

we've still got a good chunk of money left. since this
money was raised for gene by friends of gene, i propose
that the money be used for one or a combination of
these purposes:

a) a package to be sent during the 2nd half of his
tour.

b) a donation to a soldier-related charity in his name.

c) send it to his wife and three kids to help defray
any expenses they might have.

the issue of shipping has now cropped up. we managed to
pack all of this in a long box that is approximately
12x18x30 inches. i don't know for sure about the
weight, but i wouldn't be surprised if it were about 35
lbs. any options for shipping, or is USPS going to be
just about all there is?

garou,

If you can introduce a water mist onto the cooling fins of your AC you might be able to reduce your room temperature a bit more while saving on electricity.

It might be worth the effort. Try it and let us know if it is worth the effort to do the misting. It is something that you ought to be able to feel right away. If you had access to a thermometer you could measure the change in the ac air temperature recirculating in your hooch immediately. You could use a hand pump pressure sprayer for the test. If this seems worthwhile there are commercial air misting kits available here that readily fit any AC. I don't know about GI ACs though.

This might be something the higher-ups might be interested in?

FYI....

"AC Mister combines a number of features in such a way as to make it possible for customers to be able to improve the efficiency of their current air conditioner with a very simple installation. AC Mister will also reduce the power consumption of current air conditioners, both window and central types.

The increased efficiency of current air conditioner systems comes from the application of several engineering principles. Water under available pressure is released through a nozzle to produce a spray mist into the incoming air stream of the compressor.

The Process
First, the water is slightly cooled as the pressure is released. Second, and most important, as the water mist is released into the air stream it evaporates almost instantly and reduces the temperature of the cooling air to the condenser coils by about 20°F. Third, some of the moisture will wet the cooling coil surfaces, which will transfer heat more efficiently. Fourth, the moisture in contact with the elevated temperature of the cooling coil will evaporate to provide additional cooling.

The Effect
The effect of this improved cooling will reduce the power input required by the compressor to provide high-pressure liquid (Freon or other). The high-pressure liquid going to the condenser will also be at a reduced temperature." [copied this from a web site.]

Tas.

After reading the thread I had a thought (doesn't happen often)  alot of the police supplies around here sell a T-Shirt that goes on under the armor that has cloth ribs running verticial on the shirt.  They work well in keeping the armor directly off of you and allows a little ventilation so that it keeps you a tad cooler.  I can find out how much they are now and we can see about getting them in the right color as well.  Just let me know, this may be a good second care package item.

  Take care Be safe Poacher.

900f - i'll check and see if DHL runs out of havre. i
haven't seen any of the yellow trucks up here, but on
the other hand, i haven't been looking for them. we've
got money for the shipping, no problem, but it would be
nice to save a bit on the costs.

poacher - that sounds like a pretty good idea. if you
could look into that, we should see if we can get two
of them, so that he can have one for "laundry day...."
we're going to have around 300$ left after shipping
(maybe more) and i imagine we could get a good package
together with that.

alright, guys -

over my lunch hour i went to the USPS and got this box on its way to gene. i filled out the customs form and requested insurance in the amount of 850$, which should cover everything (at least the critical stuff). on the advice of a member from another forum, i listed the base commander as an alternate recipient in case gene was "out there somewhere" or otherwise temporarily unavailable when it arrives. i also specified priority mail since "parcel post" packages might sit there for quite a while before they make it on the plane.

the final weight of the package was much more than i thought it would be (50 lbs., 14 oz.) but the final shipping cost, including priority and insurance, was quite a bit less than i thought it would be (66.95$), so i guess things evened out pretty well. they said that 10 days is a "normal" amount of time to allow for shipping; i told them that i will start worrying after a fortnight.

when i have free time, i will tally up the remaining funds and we can make a determination of what to do with them. a quick look at the numbers indicates that we should have a little over 400$ left. poacher has given a very good suggestion for the beginnings of a second package, and i am sure that before too long we will be able to come up with more. two other alternate courses for the funds are also suggested above, so we can surely come up with a plan.

i'd like to congratulate and thank each and every person who contributed in any way to the successful completion of this project. were it up to any one of us alone, this endeavour would most likely have been out of reach for many reasons. by pooling our resources, knowledge and experience, we were able to make this thing work, and i can say, without controversy, "MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!"

Does TimberGhozt have family (wife, son, daughter) here in the States? I have been sponsoring a service member’s family (a buddy of mine’s son) to help with incidental expenses. It is really tough on the families left behind. Maybe some funds towards this side of the equation may be beneficial.

Even though I am a little late in the mix, I am more than happy to assist. Let me know what I can do.

Rick, I am a doctor of the PhD variety. I am a microbiologist running a research lab for a large pharm/chem company in the South. Getting to the point of retirement so that I can spend more time hunting, fishing, and pissing off liberals.

Knowing what a sacrifice our military families are making for this country, a little check now and then is our way of saying thanks. We have several in the military at work and fortunately our company provides support for their family members. Anytime an unforseen expense arises, we pass the hat. It sure beats seeing tax dollars wasted and we know our contribution goes directly to those in need.

Howdy all,

My laptop's power supply shit itself, so I had to borrow one for a minute...

Sam - Good Idea, and yes it works.  We have some big ass mobile swamp coolers we use to cool the areas around the aircraft in the hangar - 6'x6' cardbaord drip area with a 4' diameter fan pulling air through the "waterfall".  There is a water reservior at the bottom we fill every couple of hours. A pump pushes the water through piping to a PVC tube with holes drilled in it.  The water flows down the cardboard and cools the airflow.  It make a hugely noticable difference in temperature.  They are called a "Port-A-Cool".

Poacher - I can't recall the manufacture of the vest, but Brigade Quartermasters sells 'em.  If memory serves they run somewhere in the 20-30$ range.  They also make a liner for the PSGT and ACG helmets.  All three types are sold at the PX's here.  I never bothered with one because I didn't wear the armor for any great length of time all that often.  And I figured it would be more of a pain in my ass getting into and out of than the armor vest already was.  But that's a personal choice/opinion.  They gave me a vest for this trip too, but I have yet to wear it.  In fact the last time I saw it was when we had to move 140 guys into 8 tents from the 13 we had originally.  As for wether or not it works - couldn't say, haven't tried or run accross someone who has.
