Yes and yes. Now that the kids are older they now know why the chicken had four drumsticks!

How do you boys dress 'em after killing. I've been useing the "squeeze" method after shooting them, throw em a bag or tie a leg, then skin 'em out later.

Carry them out, let the beagle play with it for a tiny bit. Drive to where my dad works, takes his knife and then dresses them. I got 3 total in the 3 years i have hunted them.

We hunt them heavy.  We have 6 great beagle hounds (aka dogs).  We hunt about 8 farms, and get about 300 a year.

We gut them immediately.  Hang the gutted rabbit in a tree and the guts in another to keep the dogs off them.

I like a 410 double, a 16 guage single hammerless, or my 20 guage Remington 870 ultra ligh pump.

We usually wait for the first snow as the cover is down and easier on the dogs feet.

Great sport.

Not since my highschool days have I hunted snowshoe hare, and that's 35years+. Where I live hare are scarce since the early 70's. Some say it is because of the influx of coyotes here in coastal Maine. Hare abundance is spotty. Some places are thick with them, but only in small areas. Located an old friend down east who has beagles and runs hare there. I am going to tie in with him for some weekend hunts.

Cleaning ASAP solves a lot of off flavor problems. I hang mine by one leg, strip off the skin then gut and de-head. It is cool here,so I use to let them hang from a tree limb until I was ready to head home.

I use to get home from school, change my clothes, grab my single 16, call the dog, and head for the woods. Never had any trouble starting one and we generally had snowshoe meat in the fridgidair. I generally cooked them in my family. I would section 2-3, brown them in butter, cover with water, salt pepper and let simmer until the meat was almost falling off the bone. Then I would throw in a handfull of rice and let it plump up. Used Bisquick to make dumplings. The rice thickened the water. Large fluffy dumplings slathered with butter, Boiled peas on the side. It's been years since I've had that and I can taste the flavor of the meat as  type this.

Trigger,

What's the squeeze method of cleanin a wabbit?

I cut a slit cross wise on the back and pull till I see feet & neck.  Hack it off from there I gut it.

Hold 'em up by the chest with your strong hand, and squeeze. The skin on the abdomen splits and all the inards pop out, slick as can be. Give them a couple of shakes, and then you can toss it into your bag to skin later. Oh, yeah, aim the body away from you, as the bladder will empty if it is full when you squeeze. My good friend who taught me this method forgot to tell me that little tip.

Triggerguard, that comes as a nasty surprise the first time.Another quick way is to cut around the middle and pull each way aiming the gut down and it drops out.

We shoot a lot of rabbits down here but don't eat as many now due to the higher incidence of disease in them.We put 36 down over an hour last night with the spotlight. For aussies it is a number game as they will take over if they are not culled relentlessly.Macca

HEY BEAR!,,,,,YES ,,,,,A LITRE IS A GOOD SIZE,,,THE ONLY CROCKERY OR STEINWARE I HAVE LEFT IS FROM THE Schweinfurtbrauhaus,, and at present I use my only remaining 1 litre dimple mug from the Munchen Octoberfest. When I say "medium " homebrew,,it is like a dark Beck's or St Pauli Girl or Lowenbrau,,,right now it is cooling off enough to make some alt lager.

Mauserman,

In the 60s, I spent some time in Bavaria.  My brother was recently married and had no furniture at the time, but wanted some beer mugs (aka steins)  for apartment decorations.  I would bring one or two back to the states every trip home.  I Must have given him 2 dozen, lots with pewter lids and nice hand painting.  He lives in Florida now and two years ago he was burglarized; took his guns and his beer steins.  I thought I'd buy him one replacement of a stein (not a rifle).  I could not believe how much the prices had gone up...better than Intel stock.  I should have bought thousands of those in the 60s.

Only one I have is from the HofbrauHaus.  Stole it.  Makes the beer taste better.

Rabbits are my number 1 game. The little Erma .22 lever action is the weopon of choice and a day rabbit huntin' just can't be beat.

The little buggers taste good too!

seems that most people use shotguns for rabbits. how many use rifles/ what caliber/chambering? this is assuming that you are hunting them to eat them, not for "red spray."

We hunt rabits with a vengenes. Any gun any where anty time! Most of the time we use 22's but as often as not we end up using our big guns,4570,7mm mag,3006,243,308 norma mag,12gagg slug, ext. There's not much to eat that way, when we do have some left we just skin the back, and take just the backstrap. If you hit them hard enough you can nock off most of the FLEES and TICKS!!!

A new twist!!!                                                                                                                             We tried a new twist on our rabbit hunting Sunday. We took out our camcorder, and recorded our hunt. That in its self was entertaining, but some of the footage was very good. Fortunately the bunnies were very willing to hang around long enough to set up the camcorder. Of coarse using our BIG guns it was a little graphic to watch, but it’s was interesting to see how the sound and impact was so different at long range. That big 300gr bullet shore does a number on a cotton tail. I think next time we will use a taller tripod for the recorder. There was little wind and a bit cold for the battery, but very fun. I hope we can do it with more hunting trips

how many did you get? if any weren't "over-exploded," did you take em home for hasenpfeffer?
