I stumbled across a Savage 112 Competition in .223 at an out of the way shop. The owner took it as part of a collection, not because of any particular interest. Have any of you had a chance to use one and are they better than the off the rack models? The Savages that I've been acquainted with have been solid rifles but don't set houses on fire. Well, the Savage followed me home. Officially it's the 112BT Competition. I'm having a dickens of a time finding information on it. It was rigged for three position witha Redfield International Match rear, a Mid tompkins front and an Anschutz palm rest.
I removed the sights and palm rest and installed a Leupold 4.5X14X40 for bench testing and load developement. If it shoots, I'll keep it, if not, it'll go. I've got some Federal Match and a box of SMK 69 grain head to load up. Without the sights, it may be a passable varminter. More in the Spring when the weather warms. Later, 788

| KP, It's actually a twist knob that hold the cheekpiece in position. when fully extended, it comes up about 3". 788 |

I've got the 12FV with the varmint stock. With Dogtown 50 grain I get 3/8" 5 shot groups. I can't complain. The gun isn't pretty to some, but pretty is as pretty does. Hey guys, An update and a conundrum. I made a range trip and rung out the 112 Comp with three different loads. With the exception of the Federal Match, I fired five three shot groups at 100 yds. The FM was just three. Results as follows: #1) Federal Match: 0.50", 0.78", 0.74". Average 0.64" #2) 69 gr. SMK, 25.5 gr. WW748, CCI 400 primer: 0.39", 0.67", 0.54", 0.38", 0.35". Avg 0.47" #3) 69 gr. SMK, 25.5 gr. WW748, CCI 450 primer: 0.63", 0.57", 0.44", 0.31", 0.68". Avg 0.53" The conundrum: I'm past the point of shooting high power match, so all of the stuff that I have for the 112 Comp, e.g. fancy sights, palm rest, will go to waste. But the .223 is relatively cheap to reload for and fun to shoot. It's up against a Remington 700VS in .308 that will shoot as well. For the small amount of varmints that I get to shoot at, do I keep the Remy and ditch the Savage, or keep the Savage and ditch the Remy? I've only got room for one. Anybody want to weigh in? 778; So tell us the other half of the equation, if not varmints then what are you shooting? Would both of them, the Savage & the Remmie, be paper punchers? If it's any sort of competition, then you might want to factor in the recoil. Generally speaking, the lighter the recoil the easier it is to stay in the X ring over the course of the shoot. I dabble at longer ranges from time to time. That was the original driver when I got the .308. Here in southern New England reaching out beyond 200 yds is tough. The public ranges stop there as do most of the prinvate clubs. I lost my one 300 yd freebie spot to construction. Not on the land I was shooting on but near enough that it put an end to it. I guess that's the question. As the longer ranges have dried up, maybe the Savage is just fine for the 'chucks and some paper. 788 |
