hey guys, i know that dang enar anything will get a pike, as long as it is something BIG, but what have you had the best luck with? my best luck has been found with frozen smelt, big red/white daredevl spoons and big rapala-type minnows. where i grew up fishing, it was illegal to use live minnows and suckers, but i always wanted to try them. a couple of times, i have seen a small perch produce BIG pike, but that's not exactly legal, either! |

In Canada for large pike (not thru the ice) I kill them wiht large silver spoons. Second best are yellow skirt5ed large silver spinner baits. These are especially good to cast into log jams without snagging. For Lake Chautauqua muskie trolling, I like very large 6+ inch wooden jointed Pikie minnows, in "tiger"; ie yellow with black vertical stripes. Fishing, I miss it. My boat is in storage, and the ice is on the lake. Merry Christmas. BEAR |

Tas, I spent about 18 summers at my grandparents cabin on a lake in Northern Alberta, learning how to ( and not to) catch pike, walleye and perch. My brother and I would spend at least 8 hours a day fishing, the rest would be divided between swimming and prowling the woods with our pellet guns. I've had excellent results using the same types of lures you mentioned. But my favorite has to be an odd looking spinner called a "Tee Spoon" Its a large silver blade that spins over a body made up of plastic orange bells.3 or four i think trailing a larger treble hook. Its a top water lure and holy cow is it exciting to see a big old pike come after one of those near the surface. I usually cast these over submerged weed beds or other structure. Another way I have tried a few times is flyfishing from my float tube using a huge deerhair mouse imitation. If you ever want a big thrill give that a try. I just about crapped my waders the first time i had a pike take my fly !! |

Thinking about the lake has reminded me of a story. One early morning, my bro and I were fishing for perch right off the end of our dock. There had been a school out there all summer and we'd had good success tossing pickeral rigs baited with minnows. We'd landed 2 or 3 and.i was getting a nibble......i set the hook and started reeling in my perch. Just as it was nearing the surface , I could see it clearly, a HUGE pike came up from the depths and swallowed the damn thing whole....shook its head once and snapped my line. I stood there shaking like a leaf while my brother rummaged through our tackle box for the biggest perch imitation he could find !! The same thing happened one more time that summer, this time to my brother. We never caught that fish........and we're pretty sure it ate a duckling that year too. Mama duck swims by with her babies in tow ......a huge splash...then it seemed like there was one less baby duck. That lake has produce 30 pound pike and i'm sure that one had to be between 20 to 30 pounds.....we were afraid to swim for a while.

tom - never tried a mouse, but i have also heard that salamanders, frogs, and even ducklings work great for northerns. the common misconception is that northerns are fiends who will strike at anything, but in reality i do believe that they are quite picky!! |

A walleye is a lot like a sager, in the perch family. I've never used a mouse in the spring I've herd a baby duck works too

I got all my hide tanning done this past week, so am planning on trying out the pike this coming week. I got a set of the Reelpearl lures, that are supposed to be the wrath of God on all species, so I will give them a go. If no good, I will soak smelt.

I see you have a posted some info on a fly-fishing website, so I am guessing that you are a fly-fisherman or at least have some interest in the sport. If either of my guess's are true, try this come spring. I strictly go after pike with my fly rod. Just like huckin' hardware at um, they will strike at a variety of patterns. You can buy lot's of fancy fly's for this such as mouse patterns (you won't need the welding glove) or most anything they sell for bass will do. But these are some of the easiest fly's to tie yourself. Anything big and flashy will get their attention. Along with these flashy fly's I use the smallest steel leader I can find. If you get a leader with the plastic coating on it instead of the expensive crap they sell at the fly shops, take a match to it and burn the plastic off it. You gotta do this to cut down on the weight, ya don't wanna sink the fly this is all top-water stuff. So in short use a tiny leader. If ya don't them pike will cut ya off in a heartbeat. Now with this equipment in your arsenal of supplies, when spring thaw starts get ready. The first days when the ice breaks up on you favorite little pikey pond, be there. Cause them pike hadn't had no top-water feeding all winter and they are gonna respond. If you know a spot that's just plumb full of pike, take the video camera along cause you just might start a top-water war like you hadn't seen before. This is how my boy and I have done it and this has been our results....

The only pike in Texas are chain pickerel and they are only in the drainage of Caddo lake on the Texas - Louisiana border.
I have caught them on almost all the common bass lures, on shiners, goldfish, worms and streamer flies and grubs. Maximum size here is about 5 lbs. Local name is "jackfish" Just most anything that is long and toothie are called that in Texas, fresh or salt water. Don
