A lot of Norinco 1911's have been imported into Canada in the past few years. Been curious about them since they are so reasonably priced [new around $400 Canadian = about $300 US]... Had been looking for a Colt Commander for some time without luck but just got this Norinco version of the Commander... only 'add ons' are the Colt stocks, 2 piece Wilson guide rod, Wilson checkered flat mainspring housing, and an oversized mag release button...

As a huge Colt fan I gotta admit these knock-offs appear to be very well made... 'smiths are using them up here for base models for IPSC and other custom 1911 work... Have the imports of them into the USA been cut off?

no, they are around... i haven't been very pleased w/ what i've been seeing w/ the knock-offs so i haven't picked one up. a lot of folks are buying the norincos (for the frame) and customizing them into what they want. there are tons of colts and springfields around here, so i haven't felt like i needed to get imported stuff, yet.

I don't believe the Norincos are importable any more. Haven't seen any new ones in some time. The Norincos were well thought of by the local IDPA and IPSC guys as platforms for building on. The imports now are Philipino, and I have heard very little good about them.

I have one and it shoots almost as good as my $1500 Kimber Super Match. They don't have quite as nice a trigger pull but they sure can shoot. The tolerances are much tighter than a Colt they don't rattle like one either. Maybe if I dropped it in the mud during a combat situation it wouldn't work as well as the Colt but It works for the kind of shooting I do. I admit I've been tempted to grind that made in China off the side a few times though.

Norincos can't be imported, thanks to Billy Clinton.

No billt, Charles Dalys are built by Armscor in the Phillipines, funny thing, they have a better manufacturing facility than Colt, they are actually ISO9000 certified.

I think the Dalys are built in the Phillipins (?) by the same folks who used to make Armscor.

Okay... sold the Norinco compact... 'cause I just got a nice Colt [Series '70 type] Combat Commander .45ACP...

Norinco:

Colt:

And when it rains, it pours [as the saying goes] also found a Colt Combat Commander in 9mm...

Update: January 2007.... Just acquired another Norinco 1911... this model's called the NP-29. It is a full size version of the typical mil-spec 1911A-1 but in 9mm. Bought this one "used"... some custom mods over 'stock' 'as issue' condition include, stainless flat mainspring housing, stainless beavertail, custom fitted hammer, aluminum adjustable trigger, stainless ambi-safety, stainless hex-head grip screws, Hogue grip panels...

Update September 2007:

Got me a NIB Norinco 1911A-1C [compact - commander sized]. This is the latest series of compact 1911 from them. Note the upgrade in overall quality. All I added was the adjustable aluminum trigger & fancy double diamond hardwood stocks:

Here is a "Norc-in-Stein"..... Fullside 1911A-1 Norinco frame with a Colt WWII USGI surplus slide. Mix & match parts include new Springfield Armoury .45ACP barrel. Wilson combat sites. Finish is desert brown 'armacoat'. Magazine is a brand new Mec-Gar with bumper pad:
