I just picked up mod 742, .308, with a older Redfield, 4x, tapered post style reticule, here's a few pics.  I thought the basket-weave checkering was kind of different.

The two brothers I have hunted with for 20 plus years,  used 742 remington , 30,06s with great satisfaction since the 70s.

I have seen one of them take a very big mule deer at very long range, using my handloaded 165 grain hornady.

The .308 is one of my very favorite rounds and it should be a good combination.

If you plan to hand load, I recomend a small base die, and save a batch of fresh factory brass for hunting, to insure reliability. Use relaods for practice only saving hand loads in fresh brass for hunting.

Great gun.  I had a friend that shot one in 308; it shot an honest 5 shot 3/4 inch at 100 yds.  I thought that was outstanding.

Might want to pick up an extra clip (might tak the same as the 760 pump).

Good looking gun Robert.  Great caliber.

I found some ammo for it, I'll have to go shoot it.  It looks like it belonged to someone who took good care of it, I expect it had a shot or two to check zero and a shot or two on game, for each, of it's 40 years.  Stock only has a few light marks and a couple of light scratches on receiver.

I was going to swap out the scope, for a 4x12 I have.  I'm thinking with the tapered post and cross-hair, it maybe the perfect deer setup for the woods, I'll going to give it a try first anyway.

As far as social mags, I have four 10rd mags, that will fit it, post sight would be good for that use also.

I would stick with the scope you have.

I might be in the minority here but a 4X12 is more scope than i am likly ever to mount on a big game rifle.

I like 2X7s 2.5X8s and I have one 3.5X10. In my opinion, the vast majority of hunters should keep there shots on game to not much more than 300YDS.

But I reapeat thats just me.

TJ, I agree with your opinion.

A hunter should only shoot as far as they're comfortable.  I tend to take shots, a little longer than 300yds, however, I got the 308 for under 200yds on moving game and 4x with a tapered post, should be plenty for that.

Most of my hunting is close  less than 200 yards for big game.  I love the post reticle.  I have a few 2x and 4x posts and they have all killed deer size game.  Again most are less than 200 yards, but I do have some at 4-500 yards.

know thy rifle is the key.

As for magazines.  I like the 760 magazines better as the Magazine  doesn't hold the bolt open which when you want to change it requires you to drop the bolt with the little lever then drop the magazine using the release. Wasted time, movement and noise.
