I was driving down the street today and it hit me.

I have always been a fan of the .270. What do you guys think of rebarreling a Savage Axis into a .270 with a twist rate that would handle the new 170 or 175 grain bullets?

Remember those barrels for 170 gr bullets don't shot 130 grsin bullets well. Thr heavy for diameter bullets do have high BC but that effect doesn't mean flatter trajectory or more energy until about 400 yards plus...not in my hunting range.  The 130 grain has more energy than the 175 gr bullet at the muzzle. Those 175 gr barrels have higher twist as the bullets are moving mucch slower and need to sspin.

So, you would be giving up antelope loads for elk loads.   depends upon the purpose.

My theory is if you want to shoot heavier bullets, get a bigger rifle..   the 280 or 7 mag handles 170 grains nicely.

1x8 will shoot smaller bullets just fine.
