Is there any real advantage in 1) accuracy 2) amount of cleaning necessary 3) barrel life of the moly coated bullets vs normal bullets? i have a Tikka 223 and a Savage varmint 243 and i was wondering if there was any reason that i should be looking at the moly coated ammo. I dont reload and probably shoot 6-700 rounds of 223 ammo each summer and 2-300 out of my 243. I am pretty sure i wont wear the barrels out anytime soon but was just curious. and for the record i like both rifles but the tikka is waaaaaayyyyyy smoother and will shoot the $11.99 per box ammo into an inch or under all day if i do my part.

hey, birddog! glad you finally put a post or two up! don't be bashful now, w/ a name like birddog, i am sure you can unleash a flurry of info, of particular value to me, about getting my dogs ready to go in a few months!

anyway, to your questions... so far as i know, there is anecdotal evidence only that says moly extends barrel life, and even though (anecdotal) evidence is thinner yet, there is some moly advocates that claim increased accuracy.

as far as cleaning goes, i think most would agree that moly users don't need to clean as often.

even though you didn't mention it, i will add that moly is capable of bringing velocity up higher - though you will likely need to handload them to realize this.

i no longer shoot moly stuff - got to be too messy is the primary reason. in factory trim, especially the hot hornady loads, i really like it. but for handloading, for the sake of simplicity (reducing the number of types, brands, and weights of bullets i 'stock', i am shooting nekkid bullets.

ready for more anecdotal evidence? very few, if any, of the very top benchresters shoot moly pills anymore.

there are problems w/ definitively testing moly vs. naked bullets... you can't use the same barrel to test life (obviously), and can't use the same barrel to test accuracy because moly requires a few shots to lay the stuff down - to coat the bore, and then the bore is far different than before. also, since each rifle is a law... some rifles just might happen to like moly/naked better...

Hunting is not a matter of life or death; it is much more important than that.

i don't know if they still have it, but lilja's website (i think it is www.riflebarrels.com) used to ahve a pretty good Q&A regarding moly and it's pros and cons.
