this is the text from an advertisement that we are drawing up for a missouri river float trip this coming august. (guess whose idea it was! ) this will NOT be a rustic affair, much to my own dissatisfaction, but it will be comfortable, first-class and fun. the outfitters we are going to use have been doing this a while, so the entire range will be covered. scenery, wildlife, flora and fauna, history and lord knows what else. it will, in fact be so "user-friendly," that the outfitters claim that they have had people of all ages and even a guy with one lung! participants will have the option to ride the pontoons (boring) or paddle a canoe. each evening at camp they will get to watch a few local artists at work creating their vision of the missouri. the cost is WAY more than i would ever personally pay, but the official word hasn't gotten out yet, and we already have almost enough bookings to meet the minimum, and plenty of space left. one thing is for sure, this would be a great trip and a comfortable way to see it all.....if anyone is interested and can afford it, let me know!

would be a grand time i'm sure... but at $1000/head, we'll not be along. now, if you could cut the price in half and include a prairie dog expo, maybe we could talk!
Hunting is not a matter of life or death; it is much more important than that.

I couldn't look at all that water without a fishing rod in hand.  If as Dakotasin says we had a few half days of PD shooting....I'd go just to spend some time with my wifeWink.

I'd go anywhere with my wife that has fishing and PDs.

Sounds like fun.  Hopefully the weather won't be too hot.  As for prairie dogs, there are quite a few towns along the river and I can point you to a couple that need to have some control measures (lead poisoning is an opportunity).

Ron, are you putting in at Ft. Benton and out at Judith?  Are you an outfitter or just running a single trip?  Do you have any concerns with the Monument designation and any restrictions that may be developed?

OK, enough questions for now.

craig -

missouri river outfitters in fort benton is handling it all. larry and bonnie cook, if you know who they are. if i remember correctly, we're gonna put in a virgelle and come out at judith. we're just running this trip through the museum this year, and then hopefully will be doing it yearly, even AFTER the lewis and clark hoopla dies down. ron ukrainetz and mike nottingham also have a keelboat and we were talking to them about doing educational floats demonstrating what it would have been like in the "bodmer" days...q830's and so on.....the momnment designation, as far as i know, won't affect things. personally, i am concerned that the "recognition" will ruin a good thing. hopefully thiswon't happen.

updated "blurb" on the trip! any questions, just ask!

------------------------------

In the tradition of Karl Bodmer and George Catlin, and in preparation for the Lewis and Clark Bicentennial next year, the C.M. Russell Museum is hosting a 4-day float trip on the Missouri River in August, from Coal Banks Landing to Judith Landing. Like the explorers of nearly 200 years ago, participants will be able to see some of the best scenery in Montana while enjoying an adventure unlike any other; the big difference is that this will be a fully guided and outfitted trip! No searching for cottonwood trees big enough to carve dugout canoes, no hunting for dinner and no “portable soup” (mentioned with such infamy in The Journals)! Missouri River Outfitters of Fort Benton will take care of all the details, and will provide everything; all you need to bring is a sleeping bag and your personal care items. Travelers will ride in comfort on one of two Coast Guard-certified pontoon boats, or have the option of paddling a canoe for a more rustic experience!

Each night and along the way, there will be much discussion of the history of the region, from Lewis and Clark to Karl Bodmer to the trappers and traders of Fort Benton. Participants are encouraged to bring along their copies of the Lewis and Clark Journals (Ron recommends the edition by Bernard DeVoto) and share in the campfire chat.

The highlight of the adventure will be in sharing the company of some of the area’s best local artists as they create works inspired by this expedition on the Missouri. The artwork created on this voyage will be featured in the C.M. Russell Museum during our Lewis and Clark Bicentennial Exhibition in the summer of 2005.

Join us August 18-21 for this outstanding event! Call Patty or Ron at 406.727.8787 for more details! There will be limited space, but unlimited fun!

so far, many (not all) in-staters are balking at the price (i think it all goes to the "backyard" factor), but out-of-staters are not having a problem with it at all. when you add up hotel costs, food and other expenses related to a 4-day vacation, it must not be too bad. (too much for ME, but not too bad......)

If you can get them to come down to Rocheport, Mo., I'll meet you at the winery overlooking the river!
