Well guys im out shopping for a new 4x4. Something with the extra cab. Any ideas as to what vehicle doesnt cost an arm and leg in the parts department like my toyota does. Ive heard horror stories about Fords breaking down more often than not. I like Dodge but do they guzzle as much gas as people say with their 318 and 360 motors. I like Chevy and Gmc too. I want a full size truck and something that handles well in the bush. Please give me some ideas and let me know the up and downs with each make so i can narrow down my best picks. I cant even drive my Toyota without wondering when its gonna crap out on me. Gary |

Gary, I grew up a Chevy man, and then went the Dodge route, and then on to a Ford. It seems I was always working on the Chevy, and the Dodge hardly ever made it out of the shop. I bought a Ford F150 4x4 while in MT. Never had a probelm out of ot. Same goes with the Ford Explorer my wife had. i got rid of the Ford in September, due to body damage it suffered from Hurricane Katrina. I now drive a Toyota, and love it. I wanted a new Ford, but was not willing to wait on a 2006 4x4 to show up at the dealer to buy. Went across the street and bought a 2006 Toyota Tundra. How old is th Toyota? I have a friend that just left a Toyota dealership as a mechanic, and the only Toyota he ever had to do work on other than routine maintenance, was one he ruined himself. Hudge Edited by Hudge |

I'm surprised about your Toyo having problems. I've only owned their cars but have found them to be very reliable but maybe not easy to work on. I have a 1999 F250 crew cab short box 4x4 with a 7.3 diesel.19 mpg with a 80hp chip tuner. Only problems are glow plugs. Just turned over 200K miles. DD Edited by deaddog |

Tough to beat a F-150. if you are looking used. Son has a 2WD Mazda/ranger 225,000 miles with a 4 banger it gets great mileage even with the cap. I bought it for him new when he was working his way thru college. I think it is going to the grave with him. I've got 35k on my Envoy, zero problems. Got a great transmission, 2wd, awd, 4wd high and 4wd low at the flick of a switch. With 275 Hp it goes anywhere with road tires and gas mileage (sucks) 21 on the highway, 17 around town. Gary; Your best bet, IMHO, is to find a 4 to 8 year old used truck that has the major features you want. You want to buy it from the original owner who wants a new truck. Do, or have your mechanic do, a detailed inspection & ask the owner about the history. If it passes, pay a reasonable price even if a touch high. 900F |

Too broad a question to answer. need to know what you re going to be
using the truck for. Going to tow a large boat or trailer? are you going to haul firewood or just groceries. How many people you carry? short or long distance. I could suggest everything from a 1 ton diesel down to a four door Nisson. Spec out the truck's job for us. |

Hunting, fishing and pulling an aluminum boat. Nothing really ridiculous but as long as i can haul a camper on it and head to the hills ill be happy. Im heading to kelowna this afternoon to hopefully buy one. Im looking for a ford f150 with an ext cab. It will do for now as im trading in the Toyota with 3 grand in cash on top. I wont get a fancy vehicle but it will do till i can save some more money and i panic everytime i drive my toyo that its going to break down. Gary |

I have a 1993 full size Bronco... still going strong... apart from the normal maintenence, and normal wear and tear for a 14 year old 4x4, it's doing pretty good... Only thing it needs right now is a rear main seal... which I will get to one of these weekends... outside of that, it's been a work horse for me... and I wheel it too...

Gary, CB gave great advise. If it is you everyday truck, but the best condition you can find (premium $). those extra bucks will save you 5 times as much. I like one owner vehicle and low miles. Dealers all set those odometers back, buy out of state at auctions and resent the miles, so don't count on mileage from a used car dealer. BEAR Edited by BEAR |

Anyway, i bought a 2001 GMC Jimmy. The bank wouldnt finance me on anything older. Now i have to re-think my hunting ways. Girlfriend says i need a pickup box trailer cause she aint letting me stick no game in the back and messing up the upholstery. I cant put a camper or ATV in the back of it so i guess its going to have to be my canvas tent and a trailer. This vehicle will do for now. It has only 63,000 clicks on the odometer and one owner which was lady driven. Ill post pics real soon. Gary |
