I won't be shooting anything over 200 yards. Mostly because I generally have to share the same bush with the deer I am hunting in Michigan. Fieldcraft is hunting for me not that I am good at it. I tend to be in a hurry and a bit noisy. Most of the deer I see are on the jump running away from me and I still manage to get one once in a while. For those of you that are able to shoot the long shot good luck. It doesn't take a long distance to leave wounded, just a poor shot. If it isn't a killing shot for you don't shoot.

Well!!.. I ben give'n all this sum thot fer'a few days, and I think most of it boils down to several factors wether or not, long-distance shots on game is really "hunt'n", or mostly be'n "proficent at long-range" with tha "advantage" of modern thecnology.

"Age",..... I'm 57 years old, I bot my first "big-game" rifle frum a "Coast-to-Coast" store when I was 16 years old,   a Russian "Moison Naget" (military surplus)7.62 with tha iron sights,.... few years later I got'a domistic 30-06 with'a 4X Weaver scope,.... then'a 7Mag with'a 3X9 scope,.... .219Zipper, .222, .243's, 22-250's, .303, 30-40Krag, .338Mag, .300Mag, and etc. followed over tha years, and I was "proficent" with evertin I tryed,.... on small-game, varmits, and big-game.
(Fer me,....anyways) as tha "range increased" I found myself, mostly jest "drive'n 'round" in'a pickup look'n fer sumpthin ta "shoot", such as ...... antelope, deer, coyotes (and, it warn't no "big-trick" ta shoot a critter plumb-center, at 400+ yards).

Tha way thet I was "brot-up" as a young'un, was,.... when ya go "hunt'n" ya put sum "effert" into it,.... or,.... ya start be'n a "lazy-slob" jest out ta do sum "shoot'n".
So, 20+ years ago I started use'n nuth'n but tha old blackpowder rifeguns,....and, I sold all my "modern stuff", and actually started "hunt'n" agin.

Now fer "location",.....I've lived 'bout ALL my life in Wyomin ('cept fer 10 years in interior Alaska), and wher I've lived,....I could "shoot" big-game frum my frunt porch (in both states)with tha modern highpower rifleguns,...so,....critters wern't hard ta find. By limit'n myself to tha old rifles wher it's NOT possible, or proper, to attempt "long-range shoot'n" at critters ,....I'm have'n FUN "hunt'n" agin, and use'n tha "hunt'n skills" thet I had ta use when I was a kid.

This ain't'a "flame" ta ANYBUDDY, what git's ther "thrills" frum shoot'n critters at "long-range",.... but,...rather sum "in-sight", fer WHY I "hunt" tha way I do.

Very best regards!!

RollinB,

Well come back from yer vacation, did you run inta anyone on yer travels?

I wouldn't mind see a picture of thet black powder gun of yers.  I had the same experience you did, I went to black powder, then bow.  Liked bow the best, but didn't have the time to case all the game I wanted, and boy hunt.  I jest started Mulie huntin in western kanas, an next year I'll be up fer a lope tag.  After thet I'll probably go back to bow.  Sold the BP gun, it was a knight disc - sold it cause BP season here in Kansas is early Sept.  way too hot fer me.  I like the air cold when I'm huntin.
