Grayghost; Thanks for the answer. Got anybody he should contact over there about getting it done? As he's in Iraq now, there'd be no booking far in advance, but he might just be able to fill a cancelled slot. 900F |

Voted never but plan to go. There are lots of things in Africa I'd love to say I had the experience of hunting, but the truth is, I haven't even met all my North American goals. Yes, Africa would be fun, but I kinda feel like until I get home grown things taken care of, I've got no business thinking about Africa and won't be broken up about not getting there. |

CB900F, he can contact me if he wishes. Although I book hunts for some of the big guys in Africa, I specialize in lesser known private conservancies and ranches in South Africa. Places that won't have 12-15 hunters on top of you and were all the best trophies are taken within the first two weeks of March. I love to hunt Africa myself, and finding remote areas with less pressure assures first time or trophy hunters a true chance at taking a Roland Ward trophy. I do not charge any fee and can help him with airfare, travel concerns, gun permits and hooking up with a quality area, PH and overall experience. He is welcome to email me anytime. No need to look for left over hunts. I have affordable hunts anytime of year. Good hunting, grayghost

Well now, If I didn't have my heart set on winter sports in the Alps just after Christmas/New years, I'd have to seriously consider taking you up on that Gray. That, and borrowing a firearm to hunt things easily capable of doing me in is NOT my idea of smart. When I get back, maybe I'll get an Africa Gun & work up a few loads for it. THEN I'll get in touch with ya Gray, if the offer would stand... Who knows, I might be able to drag an over-the-hill old fart with me then. No point in going alone & not having someone familiar to share it with, know what I mean? CB's Brat |

garou_22, no problem on the gun. Our PH's have them in small, medium and big calibers. I use a .223 and .280 on everything but dangerous game, which requires a minimum of .375 cal. Plains game are very enjoyable to hunt with anything from tiny Blue Duiker to giant Eland. Something for everyone. Good luck in the Alps!

I've never hunted Africa but would like too. I got a government sponsored vacation there once in 1994. I spent 45 days in Entebbe Uganda. My unit was there to evacuate humanitarian relief workers if needed while working in the Rawandan refugee camps. Most of my time was spent unloading aircraft bringing in supplies. I did get a 3 day R&R trip and went on a photo safari. I saw quite a few animals that I would like to hunt. Africa is really a beautiful country that I really enjoyed being there. Hey there gents! I went to Zimbabwe in 2006; going again next September. Still Zimbabwe but a different area. Last time it was for Cape buffalo, eland, kudu, waterbuck, zebra, warthog, impala. Next time I'm just going for buffalo and tuskless elephant and maybe a hyena. If I just get a good buffalo that will be enough though. Anyway, in my opinion, hunting in Africa is well worth the (very!)considerable expense and pain of the long flights. I hope to go on safari five or six times before I get too old. My next hunt (2010 maybe) will either be for a leopard or bongo and Lord Derby eland. |

BEAR: Hey there, how goes it? Yes, I'm scheduled for two days of tiger fish fishing at Chifuti's new fishing camp and then 14 days of buffalo and tuskless hunting at one of their safari concessions. I don't know if it is Chewore or Dande or one of the newer ones they have picked up. I'm going to SCI-Reno and I think I'll find out then. I'm still up in the air about the tuskless ele though. I don't really have a compelling desire to shoot an elephant. If I can switch the hunt to two buffalo instead, or a hippo on land, then I'll do that (the cost is about the same). I'd much rather spend 14 days hunting for two really big buffalo. I recall you said once that you declined to shoot a tuskless. I've also considered leopard but September is not a good time they say. Just gives me a reason to go back I suppose... What are your plans? |

"....up in the air about the tuskless elephant though. I don't really have a compelling desire to shoot an elephant." that was my feeling exactly...you have a good memory. I have hunted Dande. It is the most north Western you can go and stay in country. We did sneak across into Mozambique, a little. The roads in that region are all made by dozers from World health organization to try to halt Sleeping sickness, as it is a tiestee fly area. I've never regretted NOT shooting an elephant. I'd suggest tow things: 1) study the horns of cape buffalo, at a zoo or in trophy rooms or in natural history museums before you go. Books and magazines also help. You need to make your own mind up (not your PHs) in about 1 second once you see the game. Since you want to shoot a trophy, not everyone does, you need to decide instantaneously. In either area you WILL get a nice bull, how nice is up to you. 2) regarding the 2-buf or elephant thing. I'd take only one buf and spend twice the time to find the one you want. To me the hunt is more important and the longer the better. In that area two days is the average to get a decent bull. If you take 5-7 day it means you had twice the fun. Lots to see and learn while you hunt, birds, mammals history. Lots of other things to hunt at the same time, including small game and predators. I would take a 416 and a 243-257 Roberts etc. and plan on some small plains game and small cats. Obviously, I envy your your trip. I have two brothers that I've hunted with for 50 years, locally and on foreign trips. My older brother has had failing health, so I've been putting off anything overseas (my open heart surgery also slowed planning down). We have gone archery for antelopes and mule deer, and we still go shoot 300 pheasants at tower shoots in Florida. I'm going to retire in January, just decided yesterday. So with more time (and less $$$) I'm starting to think right now about '08? BEAR 2) |
