While Nebraska isn't exactly a foreign country us flatlanders sometimes think of it that way.....LOL
Several folks here are hell bent on a (mostly) white goose hunt this fall. We have 130 or so decoys and calls. I've hunted Manitoba and had fantastic shooting for both mallards and geese but folks keep telling me to hunt at home (USA) first.....Montana or North Dakota for example....and it seems to be a smnart thing to do! My question.....are there good places there in northern Montana to set out goose decoys in the grain stubble....are the bag limits similar to Canada?....(20/day) We don't need an outfitter....just a place to set decoys and a motel and maybe a fine restraunt . ..... please send email if one has some help and I'll check back here as well vapodog at hotmail dot com Edited by vapodog |

I saw the first flock of snow geese I have evr seen in Montana just two weeks ago. Canadian geese we have in over abundance of. But this far west we don't get that many snows, and I have never seen a blue here like ND. I would think that eastern MT. would be good for snows, and maybe blues/greys. Now if you want to hunt canadian geese. I bet I can get you on some good stubble right around here. MM |

Where are you at now? there is two different fly ways in MT. If your on east side of the rocks one of the best places is freeze ( near Great Falls )out lake, it's a huge duck thing. In the fall some times there is 500,000 to a 1,000,000 snows on it and lots of Block management areas around it. Way east there is one too but I can't remember its name its up north. On the other side (Missoula) there is Nine pipes it's like Freeze out. Now the bad news; A lot of time our winter arrives before the geese, the lakes freeze over and the geese fly over. PS The first flights touch down at Alkali lakes on the Blackfoot Reservation by Browning, it can be VERY good hunting up there too. |

Thanks for the replys folks.....always good to hear what the world is like in the North country.
After a lot of researching this hunt the focus seems to center around Swift Current Saskatchewan. There's even a few sandhill cranes to be had there in mid to late September. I'd sure like to try the canadians in Montana however...always a good place to hunt. Montana has my respect in a lot of areas! |
