I won a barretta 391 semi auto at the Friends of the NRA banquet last spring. I havnt even put it together yet. I am having a hard time deciding if I should shoot it or not. This is a really nice shot gun. I have seen it at stores anywhere from 800 to 1000 dollars. Also rumor has it that this model has been discontinued.

What do you guys think? Shoot it and enjoy it. Or put it up and dont think about it for 20 or 30 years.

Wing,

   391's a good gun, they can take 2 to 4 boxes to break them in.  I don't like the forearm, and I think that matters most - How does it fit you.  I pick a spot on the way, close my eyes and shoulder the gun.  If it's on nearly all the time, It's passed the first test. 

How does it shoulder, balance, and fit ya?

If it's a gun that you wouldn't buy even if $$$ wasn't a concern I'd trade it off or put it in storage.  If it is go ahead and use it.  If unsure, I'd see how it fit like spot shooter suggested and then go from there.

I dont know how it fits because I have not even put the barrel on it yet. Ill try that and see.

I have only got rid of 2 guns in my life. I have been kicking myself ever since. I dont think I should trade this one because I know I will regret it some day.

I have always thought I would like to have something new that was 30 or more years old. When they came out with the 30'th anniversary Camaro I thought If I only had that much money to burn I would put one in the garage for a minimum of thirty years.

Tough  decision.

Trade it on something your want and will use.  You could even trade it on a 30 year old or older classic.  You should be able to get a Winchester model 12 in 16 guage perfect for less than the $1000 you mentioned.  Maybe a Browning reproduction of the classic Model 12 in 20 guage!

When guns are unloved and unused they rust out of spite.

Up here in the G.F. Mt. area, a model 12 can be found for around $400.00.  These are working guns, not safe queens in NIB condition.

As you probably know CB, I dont live in a shot gun friendly part of the country. When you find them they are usually reasonably priced. But their are not very many on the used racks. Casper is the same way. I bought 2 Wing masters in really good shape from Dean's in Casper for $120 each.

Have you seen any A-5 Sweet 16's lately? How much were they?

Haven't seen any A-5's, but then I haven't been looking either.  I know that they have a loyal following, but I'm not one of the followers.  However, I'll start keeping an eye out for one.

I'd still go for the Model 12 'cause I'm a pump guy.  but checkout the condition in the pictures of this A-5 lightweight 12.  Seems like $600 well spent.

It is in excellent condition retaining 99% of its blue finish with one or two handling / usage marks. The barrel, which is stamped “** SPECIAL STEEL – 12 GUAGE -- SHELLS – 2 ¾”, is 27 ½” in length, modified ( MOD ) choke and the bore is in excellent condition. The wood is in excellent condition, very highly figured, with very light handling marks. This Browning Auto-5 “Light Twelve” came to us used but it is in “Excellent Overall” condition and in excellent working order.

That looks like a really nice one. I see alot of light twelve's but very few Sweet sixteen's. I wonder how the prices compare?
