that could be a nice Field gun for hunting, might work good for Skeet, possibly for some sporting clays, Gun should feel tight when locked up (closed) and if you can feel tightness when you open the gun, or it doesn't just fall open and feels sloppy it should be OK, check the for-end iron where it joins the receiver, look for ragged up metal where they meet, not good, someone has not taken good care of it, while you have the for end off look at all the moving parts in the for-end, a very overlooked area that speaks of care, everything should be clean and functional, take the barrels off and look at the breech, make sure the firing pin holes are round and not looking like they have been peened or damaged,(steel base hulls can cause this) its fixable but about a 250.00 fix for a double gun. take some empty hulls to use as snap caps and check the trigger and if it has selectable triggers make sure they are working right, this will also check the extractors and ejectors depending on how it was built, good luck and show us some pictures if you end up with it.

Savage/steven doesn't make shotguns. They merely contract with a foreign company to make them and Savage sells them under their name. It is interesting that this is marketed under the Stevens name, not Savage. Stevens has been the cheaper line for the Savage Arms Company. The 512 is made in Turkey. Turkey is the cheapest place to get guns manufactured to day. I think Wetherby, Mossberg and others buying guns from their. The only negative I'ce heard on the turish 512 is that it is a safety selectable barrel model. This is a very complex mechanism for anyone to build. There have been problems in moving the safety on-off and on selecting the proper barrel.. The factory does repair these things but doesn't always get them right. Most American guns are designed to be put together without individual hand fitting. The Turkish designs use more hand fitting, so if it is wrong the Amreican company guy that is fixing it needs to really be skilled (file/polish/fit). I guess I'd say you get what you pay for The 512 sells for about $550....The browning sells for about $1500. There is a reason why only Ruger makes a double shotgun in America. |

The Steven's 512 is realtively new to the Savage/Stevens offerings. I have one I bought last fall in 28ga. Not 'nuff rds through it to make any real conclusions BUT so far it appears to be well made to fit the price range. Wood is nice and metal work looks good and the frame is scaled to the 28ga & the whole gun feels good to me. The forearm and grip are in porportion to the frame size too. NOT clunky feeling like some overseas guns. I think the reason the 512 is in the Steven's stable is because Savage markets a line of shotguns from Italy that are priced about twice that of the 512 and maybe of better quality..twice the quality???...and Savage has always had 2 lines since they bought the Steven's label many years ago, kinda like Chevy and GMC trks. It should make a fine field gun for the amount of hunting rds an average upland hunting guy would use in a season but I don't know how it would stand up to intense trap or skeet shooting ie many hundreds of rds per year. I don't know about the bbl selector part, it seems to work OK for now. I am really a SxS fan & to further refine that statement...a 20ga SxS fan and only have one other O/U and it is a Red Label in 20ga (my favorite gauge for upland bird hunting) and the quality is far superior to that of the 512 but then again it costs more by at least twice. My .02 worth. IBD |

WELL!! Hi Irish. I too prefer sidebys to any others. I only have one, it's a WW Greener live pigeon gun. A spectacular dove gun, except it doesn't have a safety. I sit with it loaded and broke on my lap. It's kind of like carrying a stick if you have to carry it a ways. What all are you packing sideby wise?..............Kingpin
