I got a call at work on sunday from the little lady saying Iris (My older dog) wouldn't eat and didn't look good. When I got home, about all she would do is stand and shake with her head hanging down. I called the vet and after telling him everything I knew he said bring her in first thing in the morning. Monday morning she didn't look much better and I noticed her not able to eat because their was something wrong in her mouth. We went to see the doc. He found a hard mass in one side of her tounge. He took a sample of the mass to send in for testing and started her on antibiotics and an antinflamitory. The next morning she seemed a little better, but we wouldn't get the results back on the mass until wednesday. Well, after alot of worring and not much sleep the phone rang.

As best as they could tell, the mass is an infection and the antibiotics allready seem to be working. She is back to her old self and I think I will get a good nights sleep tonight.

Its funny how these guys get to be a part of the family. Iris will be 14 years old this may so, according to the vet. is in her sunset years. I don't know how I will handle it when her time comes. Hell, she is at least 90% deaf and I think she is getting dimentia, but she is still my best girl.

Thank god she is going to be ok.

hey, randy - glad to see that she's going to be ok. we recently lost a cat to the same type of malady. he might have pulled through, but was so old that he didn't have the strength.

glad this one has a happy ending. enjoy her while you can.....

Oral abscess are common in older dogs.  The antibiotics works for most cases.  Some times they need lanced and drained and more antibiotics.  Sounds like he is on his way to recover, be nice to see him chowing down a little soon.

Give Iris a pat on the head for us.

eleven .don't know for sure since he's a rescued critter. he's just started to
get to the "crazy old dog" stage of life. have noticed a little bit of stiffness
this winter.

that is good news, all in all, wing.

for us, hera - our old lab, was just diagnosed w/ cancer on monday. she's too old for surgery, but for now she's doing well.

Hunting is not a matter of life or death; it is much more important than that.

The good thing about Iris is when the vet sees her he always says she looks alot younger than she is. She is in really good shape. their is times when I come home from work she runs around and jumps like she's 5 years old. Sometimes I think she will make 20 years old.

Thanks for the kind words guys. It looks like she will be with us for a while longer.

What breed dog is she? Some of the small breed's live a very long time? Having had a lot of dog and having them pass on me I can tell you from morbid experience, nothing mends a broken heart like a puppy. I lost Otis Xmas befor last and don't know how I could have taken it were it not for Squirt and Bodie, both 5mos at the time.

She's a German Shorthair pointer. For a dog her size, I think she has had a pretty good run. Thats not to say I am giving up.

The doc wanted to do a blood test to see if she would be ok for anisthesia to remove a growth on her chest. the results came back today and her liver enzymes were elevated. enough that he is concerned. I guess we will go back and talk to him tomorrow and see whats next.

Wish her luck. I think she will need it.
