What weight do you guys prefer your trigger pull for a hunting rifle?

I have been working on loads so I can hopefully use my new Winchester for elk this year. I almost needed a pry bar to pull the trigger. I checked it and it was way beond the limits of my guage. I would guess around 8 to 9 pounds. So, I set it to just over 4 pounds. It seems as crisp as any factory trigger I have. Much better.

I was just wondering if you guys thought 4 pounds was too light.

Thanks

3.5 lbs for my field rifles (35 whelen and 7-08), 2.5 lbs for varmint guns (.223 and .308).  All bolt guns.  I've got 4.25 on the Marlin lever gun, though there isn't a whole lot that can be done, but I'm not complaining.  You should be fine at 4.  788

If you like it, and you don't pull off target, four pounds is fine.

i set my hunting rifles somewhere around 2 - 3.5 pounds, depending on if the rifle can safely go that low.

Hunting is not a matter of life or death; it is much more important than that.

Hiya wingmaster, long time no see!

2-3 lbs is usually what I have my rifles set on.  Honestly though it's very different for different people.  Some like zero travel moderate (3-5 lbs) trigger weight.  Others like some travel just so they know when to expect the boom.  I think for me, it depends on the application.  For general sporter weight guns for hunting I like my triggers at the prescribed 2-3.5 lbs with just a little creep or travel.  For my Rem 700 Sendero long range gun, I like a 2 lb trigger with zero travel.

I think the ideal thing is to go to a place where you can try different triggers.  Nearly impossible to do I know but after shooting a few rifles with varying triggers, you'll be able to pick the one that "fits" you best.  Rifle triggers are a lot like shotgun fit - one size doesn't fit all.  JMO

I set mine at 2#. It's light for the average guy to get used to, but I have years of experience with 2 oz triggers on my target rifles. For the average guy, I would recommend 2.5-3 pounds. Not that I feel that I am exceptional, I just have a lot of experience with very light and double set triggers.............Kingpin

Thanks guys.

I think I will leave it at 4 pounds for now and see how it goes.

I have been checking in pretty regular but have'nt had much to add. You guys seem to cover everything pretty well without my smart assed comments. But I have been thinking a few smart assed comments might just be in order.

Thanks again guys.

Wing, In the smartassed mode of things my reply would be..Depends on how thick your gloves are. Cold weather and heavy gloves or very cold fingers can make too light a pull a real adventure. I'd agree that 3.5 - 4 pounds is about right for cold weather hunting. RD

Personally I like 3# for BG hunting.  I strongly believe that lighter triggers shoot tighter groups.

But what ever you pick, I think knowing when to expect a gun to fire is important.  A trigger too light with out the shooter knowing it's trip point has caused the miss of many a good trophy.

Nice hearing from you Wing.

I havn't thought of the gloves thing. We have hunted in 75 degree days and other times it has been 10 to 20 degrees. I have seen those wool mittens that the finger end folds back exposing your fingers. This might be a good reason to try some out.

Thanks again guys
