Topic: Scopin’ a Compact Rifle. Posted: 15 September 2003 at 10:30 |
Here's a question for all you more experienced shooters out there with compact type rifles.... What kind of scope do you favour for them?
My current thinking is a big, honking scope doesn't belong on a compact rifle.... I have two Rem Model 7's. One in .308 Win and one in .223 Rem. The .308 has a Leupold VariX-II compact 2-7 on it. The .223 currently has a Bushnell Trophy 1.75-5x32mm on it.
Here's the .308.....

I'm thinking of upgrading the scope on the .223 to a new Leupold VariX-1 2-7x33mm.
I'd appreciate any thoughts......
Regards, Marcus.

Howdy Marcus >> Don't have a lot of experience with compact rifles. Most of the things that I shoot I'm kinda happy to have a little weight to them. I suppose the only thing I've got that would resemble a compact rifle at this time is the 94AE .307 Win. and that thing's wearing a Leupold Vari-XII 4-12x40mm. Probably not what most would consider ideal for this type of rifle and cartridge. I may be prone to agree with them as I dare say the .307 will never need the magnification of the high end of this scope. Unfortunately, it's all I had to throw on the lever action at the time and she's somehow stuck where she is . 'Spose I'll just have to make the darn thing work. Chat with ya later. >> klallen

have the scope as big as you can without it looking awkward or being over-powered for the cartridge. Dont put a 4-12 compact on a Ruger Compact!

Howdy Klallen - Normally, I wouldn't consider scoping a 1894 Winchester lever. I have a 40's vintage one in .30WCF just as it came outta the factory. However, if I had one of the newer Winchester '94's that comes from the factory all set-up for scope mounts then I suppose I would consider it. Especially, if it was in one of the "high performance" catridges for that rifle. I think all of us have been in a position at one time or another when we scoped a newly acquired rifle with what was on hand. That Leupold 4-12x40mm would be perfect for my Win .270 - LOL.

Winchester 1894 .30WCF [1940's vintage].

Winchester '94 AE "Trapper" in .357 Magnum. [factory dripped & tapped].
NH-Hunter - Yup, that's exactly what I was getting at... sometimes a huge scope just doesn't look right on a compact rifle. I may be stretching it, but I have just put a Tasco WC+ [Japan mfg] 3-9x44mm back on a Rem 788 carbine in 7mm-08[18 1/2" barrel]. The saving grace is that that rifle shoots in that combination!

Regards, Marcus.

NL - This is a M70 Compact in 7-08 Rem. It is meant to be my future Mich deer rifle - weighs only 6 lbs w/o scope and has a 20 bbl. It has an old 1.5 to 4.5 steel tube Weaver on it now, which I was going to change to a 2.5 to 8 Leupold tonite. But it got too late - will do later. So far 139 and 140 grn bullets performed poorly. So I loaded some Horn 162's and Nosler 160's to test for accuracy. I prefer a low power variable for the compact and my 308 Win's for Mich thick cover type hunting. I carry on the lowest power setting.

Hey There
This is what the 788 will be wearing shortly.

I wanted the 1.5x6 but they no longer make it,so unless I find a used one it will be the 2x7.

when i scoped my model 7, i found 2 scopes that looked nice on it... first was a leupold 3-9x33 compact...second was a fixed-6.
the 3-9 is a better choice if the rifle's mission is undefined (meaning, you'll be hunting at unknown ranges in places unknown). the mission of my model 7: get new shooters/hunters to kill game. in order to keep everything under control during the intense adrenalin rush a new shooter will get, my m7 is scoped w/ the fixed-6. a variable power, and heaven forbid an adjustable objective, is just too much for a first-timer.
but... i would definitely stay w/ a compact-type scope...

Logan,
Depending on the range, I wouldn't overlook something on the low-power end. On my compact rifle, my Ruger 77 257 Roberts, I use a Leupold VX III 1.5-5X. However, I wouldn't mind putting a 4 X fixed on it either. Just my preference.

On my .308 model 7, I have a Leupold 3x9 compact. It is a great little scope. On my 7-08 Winchester Lightweight, I have a Leupold Vari X III, 1.75x6. It is the short scope that Leupold discontinued. Both are great compact scopes. My father has 2 of the Leupold Vari X III, 1x5 on a 7-08 and a .243. Great little scopes. He also has a Leupold (y'all see a pattern here?) 3x9 compact on a Model 7 he had rebarreled to a 22-250. It is a great little package.
So.... based on my fathers experience with his 22-250, I'd go with a Leupold 3x9 compact for your .223. Any of the scopes I've mentioned though will work great on a compact rifle.

Thanks for the info guys.... it's gonna either be a matte Bushnell Elite 3200 2-7x32mm or Leupold VariX-I 2-7x33mm for my Rem 7 in .223......too bad the VariX-I's don't come in matte, which is my current preference in scopes.
Regards, Marcus.
