I inherited a Ruger American 30/06 that I'm using for "Varmints and such" with a Vmax 110 bullet, 3500 fps, way fun.
But now after using it for a year I'm kinda liking it, It is short and very light and very accurate so far.
Now maybe I need to work up a "Game" load.
I got a few boxes of Hornady 180 SSTs.
I was looking for 190 Grains BTSP but just could not find any.
If I'm going to shoot an '06 it may as well not be a 308...Wink
More testing.

The '06 is an ancient cartridge.  In a Ruger 77 or #1 there is room to hotrod it a bit.

The best velocities and flattest range will be with 165 gr BT.  IMR 4064 and 4895 should work.  The 165 gr should be more than enough for even elk.  But you would probably use the 45-70 or big 8 for that.

My 30-06 shoots 150 grain Sierra Pro Hunters (flat base) really good. I haven't hunted with it very much but I have killed an elk with it at about 250 yards if I remember right.

A couple years ago I got some 180 grain Game Kings to try in it but just started working on a load and got sidetracked.

I'm pretty sure the 30-06 has been around long enough to have proven itself.
I have always considered myself to be quite the bullshitter, But ocasionally it is nice to sit back and listen to a true professional......So, Carry on.
