Question time again. Some of you might remember my restocking a 721 in 06',it shoots good enough and is a fair enough hunting rifle BUT,it's an 06'. I'm just not a fan of the 06',don't know why,I have tried to like it,I've been back and forth to the range with it and even though it shoots good I just don't care for the cartrige Here's where my question comes in,there's alot of Rem. 700 take off barrels out there and I'm a thinkin' about doing something. Are the threads the same on a 700 as a 721 ? This was a good deal for my wifes 25-06 ,for 1/2 the price of a new barrel from someone else I got a brand new take off. What do ya think ?

I didn't respond to the "take-off" barrel as I had posted a negative on that 2 days ago. Not my cup of tea. the 257 Wea is a nice rifle. I don't have one but have looked seriously at the Mark V light weight in that cartridge. I like the 25 cal as there are a lot of good 120 grain bullets. Got a 257 Rob now, so the 257 Wea is not in my future. The 257 and the 25-06 are pretty good 'lope rifles, and should work for most big deer especially at 300 yds plus. Those '06s are just too much plain vanilla, they do it all but no sizzle!!!! Go for it BEAR Edited by BEAR |

The thread pitch is the same. 1.050 (plus or minus a little) X16. What caliber are you looking for? I have a few. The only trouble you will run into is timing it so that the writing on the barrel lines up straight, and possibly the head space may be out just a little...........Kingpin

Tazz, if your looking for a big game rifle, something other than just hunting deer or speed goats, I'll sing my praises of the .338/06 and brother it just don't get any better for putting down big critters under 300 yards. Not to mention the fact that Elmer Keith himself, would surely be smiling down upon you too! I have such a rifle in a model 70 Winchester (used to be a 30-06 caliber) featherweight, that we took the barrel off of several years back and it is a honey's delight to shoot. It was my backup rifle to my .338 mag, until my wife shot it at the range one day. Now it is her elk rifle instead! It has a 23 inch barrel and a joy to pack around the high country. Hey, you can still hunt deer with the rifle and use those 180 grn. bullets! Now if you want to go after those big bears in the woods, just slip a 250 grain pill into the magazine and get ready to present your wife with a bear rug to snuggle on LOL. Edited by 2Bits |

Tazz, I know a fellow here in Colorado Springs ( Actually Monument) Thta is always asking me if I know anyone who wants take off barrels. He does a lot of big magnums custonm stuff and to hear him tell it, he has barrels laying all over the place. He is an eye doctor and does it as a hobby. I could put you in touch with him if you want to see what caliber she has.PM me. |

2 Bits; Ah, the .335 OKH, if I remember correctly. Rename it the .338/06 & forget the it should be T'other way 'round. But that'd be the .300 Winchester magnum. And, yes I know that there are differences between the two cases, on the far side of the decimal point, for legal reasons, and that's a don't-make-no-never-mind kinda thing to practical people for discussion purposes. Tikka, I gotta admit that a man who likes small block Chevy's, & don't like the shooting equivalent, just puzzles me. But differences make the world go 'round. 900F |
