In a few weeks,

I will be getting my 270 back from getting rebarreld. In case you don't know, its a pre64 model 70 featherweight. and the new barrel is a 22 inch and should match the origional contour. I bought a leupold VX3 2.5X8 by33 for it and while I am waiting for the rifle to come back the VX3 sits on my .257-roberts. I really like the scope on the roberts, so I will have a hard time taking it off.

One way or another I will be needing a new scope. I don't know if I can afford another VX3. If I can do you think I should get another 2.5X8 for the 270, or mabye a 1.75X6 for the .257 R. The 1.75 might be better on low setting for shooting with both eyes open.    If the money is to tight and I pick a VX2 should I get a 2x7by33 for the .257 (the 2.5X8 goes to the 270). or mabye get a 1X4 for my model 7 308 and put the 2X7 its wearing on the .257.  what do you think ?

I would consider a Burris signiture select if I could get a look at one.

I have a Vari X III in 1.75x6.  It is a great scope.  Get that one for the Roberts.  Plenty of scope for that gun.
Y'all shoot straight!!!

Those are all good choices.  My Roberts wears a 3-9x; I think the Roberst is a long range gun and at 250 plus yards the 9x is needed....at least with my old eyes.

Another thought, you really like the VX3 2.5X8 by33.  It you can push the $$ why not get another.  There are a lot of advantages in gun handling to have two identical scopes.

I'd say leave it on the Roberts and get a 3-12 VXII or 4.5-14 FFII for the .270, but that's just me.

Decisions decisions huh TJ?

Well, you know what I like on my roberts already - a Vari-X III 1.5-5X

I love that little scope for my uses.  However, BEAR is right.  This caliber can be a long ranger in the right package.

I suppose if I were leaning to a longer ranges a 2-7 or a 3-9 would be the pick.

If you can't go Leupold, I'd consider Burris (Tikka will smile at that idea) or perhaps a Sightron.  Both of these scopes have worked well for me.

Keep us posted.

The scope i pick will almost defintly be a leupold. And Burris is the only other posibility unless some one came up with a hell of a deal !  Bk , I have a 4.5X14 on my 7mmSTW, great scope for that gun but  the where I hunt you never know how close or far a deer might be to you when you see him. I want a scope that on low power I can use with both eyes open for quick shots. A 3X9 would be ok mabye but the 2.5 X 8 is quite abit smaller and suits my need lots better. I may end up with a mill dot type retcle mabye the boone a crocket version from leupold.

The 1.75 X6 sounds great for my Roberts, but like bear said having the same scope on several rifles has a good point. My .338 win mag has a VX3 3.5X10 and at some point I would love to put that on my 25,06 and get another 2.5X8 for the .338 but that is not a priority now.   I did,nt get any votes for the 1X4 for my .308 that frees up the 2X7 for lil, Robbie. Il keep thinin on it I have some time before i have to choose !

TJ, good points. I can use my 4.5-14 FFII with both eyes open very easily on 4.5, even on 14 but not quite as easy, not to bad though. Largely depends on your eyes I guess, mine are stil young and dumb. The chance for extended ranges was exactly why I opted for the higher power. Depending on where I go I have a pretty good idea of what the range might be, if I suspect anything will be up close I leave it low, if something steps out far you can still go, or it takes but a second to spin the power up.

As far as reticles, and this is just my opinion, I really like Burris's B-plex, very simple. Leupolds varmint reticle is nice but only available on 6.5-20's, I don't really like the look if the B&C, just personnal choice again. The problem here is there are so many good choices it will be hard to go wrong, but then again it is hard to narrow down what is right too!

TJ - I was going to say something cheeky about a Bushnell Elite 4200 3.5-10x40mm for your .270 or .257...

But you've stated Leupold is the way for you, so I think you've already answered it... get another VX-III 2.5-8...

Marcus.

Thanks NL,

I really love this little gun.  For where I hunt eastern whitetails, it fills the bill the vast majority of the time.

I was first introduced to this package by Outdoor Writer Edward Matanus in his book "Deer Hunter's Guide to Guns Ammo and Equipment" back in the mid 80's.  He really praised it up and after a long 8 years, I finally got one.  It's been my primary deer rifle for some time and I've probably taken near a dozen whitetails with it without any problems.  I've got other calibers for sure but this one sure is accurate regardless of what I feed it and it's light to carry and handles well.  I'm happy with it to say the least.
