Hey
You mean this year.LOL Round here in Tenn. when I'm in the open woods a Remington 7600 in .308. If I'm hunting brush my .35 Rem. If I go out west any time my Savage in .300wsm or the Browning in .308. But this is just while I'm sitting here thinking about it,when it gets right down to it.I always grab a .308 without thinking.LOL |

Hey NH: Here's what you can spend your hard earned money on at Cabela's. Looks like a perfect rig for a lefty and you would never have to buy another rifle again:

first of all, pass on the conquest. now, to the question... my backup rifle depends on where i'm hunting at. if i am in the black hills (brush hunting), then the marlin 336 in 30-30 is my back-up. if i am at the farm, the 25-06 (rem 700 bdl) is my back-up. if i am hunting on the missouri river or west of the mo, then it is a 300 wsm (win 70). if i am prairie dog hunting, then either the 223 (rem or savage) or 22-250 (rem 700 bdl), or 243 (rem model 7 or rem 700 adl) or 308 (rem 700 vls). whichever isn't being used is back-up. the rest of the guns are kinda like niche guns... it's really cold out and i want to hunt coyotes, so i take... etc etc etc |

Why say no to the Zeiss Conquest? Isnt it better than a Vari-X III which is 60 bucks less? NH_Hunter |

you'll have to look for yourself, don't just take my word for it. but: i noticed the conquest might be just a hair brighter than the leupolds (debatable), but the clarity and resolution were definitely second best. really frustrating to look thru, actually. the constant eye relief is nice, but it seems to be pretty critical, so can be a pain at times. also, the conquest is significantly heavier than a leupold. one thing i really like about the conquest is the reticle. by far the best hunting reticle - not so heavy that target shooting is hard, but heavy enough to get the job done. i think that if you were to spend $400 on a scope, the money is better spent on a leupold. |

I always have an old Milsurp in the truck, or in camp for spare firepower. They ALWAYS work.

If I get one, I'd be a 35 cal, either the 358, or the 350 mag. Always figured with as much of a accuracy nut as I am if I built a surplus gun, by the time I was finished I'd have just as much in it as I would if I bought a new one. Spot |

NH, Oopps, I screwed up!!! I used some of thet extry cash from sellin the Browning Citori to order a BLR '81 in 358. Had to stick to my dream cartridge, and action stead of going with the 350 Rem Mag. It ain't a Model 71, but the ballistics are the same and it's got a removable Magazine. See I listen to you guy's, hope my wife ain't readin my stuff, she don't know yet!

Gee, I know this will be kind of a boring answer, but my back up rifle is a 30-06 Howa. What better back up rifle right? When things go wrong I just go back to my old favorite. Fits like a glove. You know, maybe I should sell the rest of my rifles and just keep old favorite.................... Nah.

When I last hunted [moose] my primary was my Browning A-bolt composite stalker .300 Win Mag with B&L Elite 3000 3-9x40mm. Back-up was my Winchester Model 70 XTR in .30-06, synthetic stock, with the same model scope.
Regards, Marcus.
