Well?

I have been using the daughters savage 243 all this year.She got it when she was Quite young, it's a great little shooting gun BUT..

 I just haven't been happy with the scope. It was a 3X9 Simmons. Up close it was OK clear and bright,but I seemed to struggle to get it to look right looking through ( to close or far ??) I just never could get it right. Way out on 8 and 9 power it was dark and fuzzy and I had two cross hears. I just could not handle it any more I took it off. I had my Bushnell elite 3X9 that I had on My 45/70 before the leaver action . I put it on and MAN It looks WAY better, clear all the way out, and snap in to focus upon shouldering. No more moving my head back and forth,Cool.Now all I have to do is go to the range and get her back to "0"

D, the optical problems are only half of the Simmons mistake.

They bounce around, I'm sure a lot of guys have sold rifles because they thought the rifle couldn't shoot when it was the $hit scope.  Same for Tasco.

We had two "freebies" on the youth model 243 for the boys hunting.  One wouldn't hold a 1 inch group after 5 boxes, when we knew it had shot better.  the next year the other 243 developed dthe 2-3 inch group disease.  Both have been put in the trash can.

I took the "freebie" simmons off right away, it went to the air rifle.  Even the air rifle killed it, I put second one on 22rf, after a few bricks, it died too.

i'[ve got a simmons 44mag 2-7x44mm on my marlin .30/30.

it works very well, but then again, it's a .30/30 (no recoil).

Fella's;

I've got a Simmons Whitetail Classic 4-12X that's been knockin' around on a .22 for over a decade.  It's been a good scope, and much better than the Burris POS that it replaced.  But, it's on a rimfire, and a non-critical gun at that.  If it goes T.U. tomorrow, it'll still have been a good scope & well worth the money.

Robert, an air gun will kill a scope faster than a .375 H&H.  Due to the nature of the beasts, they have a recoil impulse in both fore and aft directions.  That will do in a lesser scope real soon now.  All Leupolds are rated as airgun capable, most others are not.  If it doesn't state that it's airgun rated, don't expect it to live long on one.

I think it's all about the dollars you spend regardless of brand. I've bought two "package" guns that came with Simmons scopes. Both scopes were pure, unadulterated, junk. I also have 5 higher dollar Simmons scopes. A Simmons 2x handgun scope that has stood up for over 2 decades on a TC Contender with HEAVY .45 colt loads and 7-30 Waters loads. A Simmons 2-5X that has been on a .58 Cal ML for the same period. A Simmons 6-24X50 Prairie Master that has been on my .223 for a couple of thousand rounds. A 3-9X40 Master Pro Hunter that has been on my 8mm Mauser shooting heavy handloads for 5 years. And a Master Pro Hunter in 3-9x44 on my .270 for 2 years. These are not Leupolds or even Nikons but they are clearer than many other scopes on the market and the internals on the master pro hunter look pretty impressive to me. I'll keep buying them until I get a reason not to. To each his own I guess. RD

I guess it is, burned once or twice, and they are off my purchase list.

Savage burned me once, but it is still on my list.

I've been using an inexpensive 3x9x40 Simmons (think it's the prohunter model) on a 7MM Mag for 15+ years.  It's held up well and has held it's zero.  Maybe I just got lucky.  Also have been using the 1.5x5x20 whitetail classics (I have three) on a 9.3x57, 35 Whelen and 375 Winch.  All work very well - at least as well as a Weaver 1x3x20 or better, and I like them.

I got burned with a cheap Bushnell scope (the 1x4x20 or something close).  Used it on the 8MM-06 Improved and it went south on the 4th or 5th shot.  Bushnell said send it in but by the time I added my postage, thier postage and thier fee to look at it I was pretty close the orginal price.  As a result I've never had and won't have another Bushnell.   Others have had good luck with them and I won't knock them.
