Anyone here a primo Jeep man? I have done a by the book adjustment on this 2.8 V6 and it runs great but I have two rocker arms that are too loose on the intake valves and are making a racket after their adjustment on using the number one cylinder at top dead center and the number four cylinder at top dead center method.If I try to tighten them the engine runs like shit or won`t run at all.. signed ,pissed off shadetree mechanic in Texas.... Timber, Did you fill the hydraulic lifters with oil prior to inserting the push rods? If not you may have collapsed them. Are you adjusting with the engine running or stopped? RD

Hey Rocky.No sir I didn`t fill them with oil.I am adjusting them with the engine cold and not running.You may be right about a lifter problem,I hadn`t thought about that..

Timber, It's been years since I've done this but I think I recall that with Hydraulic lifters you should fill them with clean oil from a squeeze bottle or squirt can before putting the push rods in. Then adjust by hand, just tight enough to get the engine running. After she's fired and warmed adjust each lifter with the engine at idle until it just barely stops ticking. Over tightening can collapse the lifters and you'll need to replace them. On some engines you can pull them up through the push rod hole with a large magnet. On others you may have to remove a valley cover or on a straight six cylinder a side plate. There's probably a better resource out there than me. I used to do this stuff all the time, even to earn a living for a while, but I think I rebuilt my last engine in 1983. RD

Hey Rocky..I had to take care of maintenance today on my Dodge and my Jeep.This engine is in my boys 86 Jeep Comanche.I will prolly pull the intake off tomorrow night or Tuesday and take a look at the lifters.I am certain you are right the more I ponder the question... Gene |

Oh Timber, I am so sorry for you man. My son had an 85 Comanche all the time he was in High school. We went the whole nine yards. 2" lift kit, bigger tires, roll bar, brakes all around, junkyard tranny, new exhaust, new gas tank, CD player, new headliner, Rear axle bearings,....... Just, Empty, Every, Pocket
We did have some challenges with it but in the long run it made us closer working on it together. When he came home on leave it puked the computer and he sold it to a guy as is. Now he misses it every day. RD

If you have an air bubble in the lifter, the air compresses as you mechanically adjust the rocker arm. But it is extra room when the lifter is actuated. If you run it, it will self purge in a few moments and then you can make a good final adjustment. I just had a similiar problem on my 4.3 L chevy vortex in my boat. Good luck BEAR |

Hey Bear..thanks for the tip.This motor is a GM engine Jeep used and I really don`t like it a bit.It would be a much better machine wi6th an inline 6 in i. I hear ya Rocky.He drug this thing home proud as could be of it.Its a big peice of shit if you ask me.Big ole tires and a lift kit and aint got enough balls to pull a bologna string out of a cats ass.I am ashamed that Jeep built a monstrosity of shitty engineering as this ,then used a damned chevy engine it...... I have owned 5 Jeeps in my life but a Comanche is one I never owned...thank God. |

TG, Sounds like you may have two bad lifters. Solids are adjusted the way your describing but hydrolics have seals and springs that wear out and do what your describing. If your cranking them down too much your floating the valves which explains the "running like shit" problem. That being said normally you'd replace the lifter, and the push rod when that happens. I have seen a few wierd things with the uderside of the rocker arm wearing odd, or the push rod wearing odd. You should be able to tell that if the thing isn't spinning when it's running. Try turning the push rod and see if it spins or returns to where it is. Good luck. Spot |
