did a little digging on the 480... from what i can find out (assuming reliable sources, of course), the 480 and 454 casull have that goofy gray finish because they have to... something about the kind of steel they had to use to get the gun strong enough to handle proof loads. forgot what it is called now, but it's different than 'regular' stainless/chrome steel.

klallen- thanks for the load data. i was wondering if 110 would be appropriate in the 480. i think i'll start w/ a pound of 110 and a pound of li'l gun and go from there.

even though i hear a lot of comment about how 'big' this gun is, it strikes me as funny... we're talking about a whopping 25 grains of powder... gonna have to spend a minute or two getting my thrower set up (it is set to throw over 70 grains of powder right now)... so, a pound of powder will probably last a day or two!

Typically, the .480 Ruger is loaded from the factory a little light.  From the bench, you'll really be able to bring out it's potential.  For a long time, all I'd heard from the more experienced handgun users was that the SRH was one of the most uncomfortable platforms to have a high intensity cartridge in.  I don't know how many times I've seen this in the gun mags.  That's one of the primary reasons I went out and got a SRH in the .454 Casull.  I figure if I could teach myself to accurately handle whatever it would be dishing, I'd be able to work with just about anything.  As it turns out, I've been pleasantly surprised with it.  There have been days when I've walked away from the range with a bruised palm or sore web between the thumb and trigger finger, but never a bruised ego.  Accurately shooting these things gives a real sense of accomplishment.  A shooting glove works wonders, too.  I use mine when shooting any handgun anymore as it's become a comfortable part of my shooting practice.  It really does wonders with the heavy stuff.

I really think you're gonna like everything about your new revolver.  I'm excited for ya to get it and start working with it.  All this revolver talk is making me think it's time for my next purchase, too.    Wish I could find a .500 for under $800.?.?.?.?  Later.   >>  klallen

wish i could just see a 500 in person!

went to cabela's and asked if they had an x-frame... said no, get 'em in from time-to-time, but they sell as soon as they get to the shelves. said they are running over $900 ($953 is the amount that jumps into mind, but not positive that is what i was told).

went to the local shop and asked him to get one in... said he can't even get one. evidently, his distributor (might have even been s&w - not sure) told him that if he ordered 20 smiths, they would guarantee one of those 20 would be a 500. essentially, that would leave him stuck w/ 19 guns that either wouldn't sell, or would sell very slowly... not good for his business...

i can't believe that s&w can't keep up w/ demand... it might be a part of their business plan, though, to keep supply reigned in a little to keep prices high... don't know. i do know that taurus is pretty good at copying s&w, and smith might be regretting this decision later when taurus and ruger come out w/ 500's... we'll see. or, maybe, smith is turning them out at maximum capacity and truly just can't keep up?

i did look at a factory loaded 500 and compared it to the factory 480 ruger... that 500 is a behemoth. 'bout like comparing a 22 hornet to a 308, sizewise.

On scopes.  I've tried nikon, Bushnel, Tasco (it was free and I over paid!), and Leupold scopes for HANDGUNS,

Wjile I'm a Leupold fan, the Bushnels were the most forgiving on eye relief.  I'm 5'10" with relatively short arms.  But the Bushnel extended eyerelief was much, much better than the others.  I now have 5 of them on my pistols and couldn't be happier.

I shoot a lot at the range and I find most of the other people's scope sighted pistols have scopes with inadequate eyerelief.  I hunt with my pistols so I can't be looking trying to find a floating egg-like picture in a scope when I bring it up to shoot.
