hey boyz,,been gone awhile due to crashed PC and no $$$ til now,,good to be back "AMONGST 'EM ".Got a puzzle. My Red Setter/Lab mix died yesterday,,not quite 2,,was fine a week ago, when it stormed real big,,lots of rain, even for Louisiana. He never would ever get in his barrel,,sat on top all thru the day and all night and thru the afternoon the next day,,S.O.P. for him anytime it rained if the temp isnt too low.He stopped eating right away, drank a little, and seemed stiff in one leg.Yesterday morning he couldn't/wouldn't com to me.When I went to feed him in the afternoon,he was dead. He was the energizer bunny til the rain,,then downhill at speed,,dead in 4 days,,can a dog who has lived outside all it's life,in all kinds of weather kick off that fast? |

I didn't notice any swelling or discharge,,but I did notice that he would not set the favored leg/foot on anything but the ground,,also,,,from the time he seemed sick 'til the end(4days ) he didn't pass anything but a little water, but he looked like he hadn't eaten in two weeks,,I'm thinkin' maybe upper G.I. blockage,,'cause the day the rain ended,he had gotten loose and shredded a pool filter cartridge,,but it was paper and he's ingested tons of that in the past tho not filter paper ,but that doesn't explain the foot/leg thing?

Irish setters have lots of disease problems, most likely from the over (in breeding) of the dog in the '50-60 when they were popular. It could have been a blood clot in the leg and more clots in the lungs that with the weather turned into pneumonia. Just thinking out loud. A physical exam or autopsy would be revealing. Some pool filters have anti-fungus--fungicide treatment, non-water soluble? |

No ideas here, but I would like to say. I'm sorry for your lose. I hate it when a good dog dies. They always take a little bit of you with them. MM |

Good dog memories live a long time. And they should. Been 15 years since my lab. Still remember how she would lay on the floor and wiggle up so she was just touching your feet. Or would walk into a room and put her head under your hand, peacefully requesting a pat. The question of 'replacement' is difficult to answer.
