So, what is your first choice for a Turkey gun?

Everyone use shotguns?

Any centerfires?  Some states may have restrictions I dunno?

I have two favorites:

My bonafide turkey gun:
Winchester Super X2 Semi-Auto 12 ga. 3.5 inch w/ Turkey Super Full Choke and Leupold VX II 1-4X scope (no stupid reticles like the turkey reticle for me)shooting a swarm of #5 shot Winchester Supreme ammo.

Since rifles are legal, it's gonna have to be the Rem. 700 VLS in 22-250 topped with Leupold Vari-X III 6.5-20X and caldwell sitting bi-pod.  Shooting the 55 grain Sierra Game King Spitzers at a little over 3000 fps - great accuracy.

Handi rifle 223. That way if they decide to hang up a 100 yds out and tell everybody how tough they are ,you can still get er done.
The most expensive bullet there is isn't worth a plug nickel if it don't go where its supposed to.

shotgun only in spring season(#4 or smaller shot), so I use:

16 ga single hamreless or,

12 guage mosberg 500 (I camo'ed it with a brush) 3" but I use 2 3/4" or

20 guage 870 super-light weight spl (3" chambers) with 2 2/3 inch shells

I call them in close so any shotgun will work, never used a second shot!

My favorite, and actually about the only thing I use, is my 20 bore flintlock. The only other ones I've shot, was one on the east side with my English sporting rifle, and one that got away from the pen at home here. I centered it with an M1 Garand, and there wasn't much left of it.

By the way, the system isn't letting me upload pictures here.

Waksupi - "wasn't much left of it"

Brings up a good point.  What is the largest centerfire that should be considered for turkey?  Of course there are many contributing factors but lets go with 'average' if there is such a thing.  Say less than 150 yds.

I use my "OLD" Marlin Goose gun. This is a 36" monster, full choke, bolt acting 3" mag, I use 2oz turkey loads of #6's. The way they kick I would think they would put down a bear if the range was right!!!And Yes I do carry some slugs for just that reason, we have called in an occasional bear .In the fall we can use any thing to shoot them ever the hens!!!!

Most any center fire will work for head shots. A full jacketed bullet should work in any caliber, along with round nose cast bullets. You'd still want to hit them in the upper body cavity, or they could get away from you. I have shot grouse with full patch .45 ACP, seen feathers fly everywhere, and have them fly away.

Trade gun kill.

I use a BPS 12 ga-tru glo sight- used an *&) Wingmaster for years till it died from old age-tried a scope- it was fine till i was stalking bird in SD- too hard to keep it in scope- went naked again and no problems--in SD where legal I've used a 22-250 kind of fun- different shooting them at 100+ YDS-

I use Winc turkey 3" (2oz) loads in #6 with a tight turkey tube.

I have two 12 gauge guns for turkey hunting and they are both the same pretty near, a minor difference or two perhaps. Anyway the guns are both Remington model 870's one with a 23 inch barrel and the other sports a 26 inch barrel. I use a scope on one (Leupold 2 x 7 shotgun) and the other has "Tru-Glo" sights on top the barrel.

One gun has a Widow Maker extra full turkey choke and the other has a custom choke from Ballistics Specialists. They both pattern very well on turkey targets at 30 yards. I get 26 shot on average shooting 3 inch Winchester shells in the 1&3/4 oz #5's. The other gun will put 20 shot in the kill zone on a target at 40 yards using #4's. Seldom do I have to shoot a Big Tom over 30 yards!
