   HOOKED ON FISHING PROGRAM

The Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks Hooked On Fishing Program has 

provided ice-fishing opportunities for youngsters since it began in 1996.

In the early years, a couple of classrooms of students could catch 

200-300 perch in two hours ice fishing on reservoirs such as Beaver 

Creek near Havre. In 2005, the ice fishing trip for the Big Sandy and Havre 

classrooms was cancelled for the first time ever due to poor ice 

conditions. In 2006, there is no ice on Beaver Creek Reservoir and student 

ice fishing was moved to Fresno Reservoir. The ice fishing trip was 

recently postponed due to poor ice and is now scheduled at Fresno 

Reservoir in mid-February, if conditions improve.

 FWP has also had to cancel the ice fishing trips planned this year for 

about 30 classrooms in the Great Falls area.

Ice fishing is expected to occur at Nelson Reservoir for area kids on Feb. 

21, and a session is also scheduled for youngsters in Zurich at Dry Fork 

Reservoir on Feb. 21.
