The most reliable shotgun is the one you still own, and for me it's a Benelli SBE, have shot 1 heavely for 13 years, in some of the nastiest weather and conditions. Now there was other brands there with me, and their owners think they are the best. I recently bought a Beretta 686 3 1/2, new, at a VERY dicounted price. I have put some biggens thru it, and it kicks, but not bad.

I've owned a few shotguns.....semi autos, O/Us, and sideXsides.

The only gun that I had real trouble with was a Browning Gold.....

the rest were quite reliable and that includes Smith&Wesson 1500, Remington 1100, and Win 101, Browning Citori, and SKBs sideXside and 505 O/U

I might pick up a Winchester SX3 for a goose hunt, but love the SKB O/Us......great and reliable guns!

Buy an after mkt stock and have a GS fit it to you it makes the Rem 870 a heck of a great shooter.I have one with a high grade walnut stock that originally was fitted to a man about my size 6'2" & 250 lbs. I've fired thousands of  rounds via trap, money shoots & hunting bandtailed pigeons, mtn quail, gray squirrels & grouse.I bought it used from the widow of shooter it came with trap & skeet barrels along with a 20g with trap & skeet barrels plus some ammo for both for $220 in the 1970's.

well here we go.......I use a Mossberg M500 w/choke tubes for duck and turkey hunting, with WWII type camo "plastic" stock and it works great and I like the tang safety too as that makes it ambi as I shoot off left shoulder.  then my M97 is a great gun too but I don't use it with steel shot and none of my SXS or O/U's ever jammed or failed me either.  I have a LH M870 that I shot trap with for many years but I don't care for the safety location, also have a M37 Win that was my first shotgun, a 12ga FC, 36"bbl that I bought for $10 when I was 14.  The shotguns I use the most are  the M500 for spring turkey and fall ducks/geese then switch to 20ga SXS or O/U for grouse, pheasant and sometimes a O/U 28ga for grouse.  Once in a while I use the 12ga M/L sxs (repro) cyl bore for pheasants...it works fine too!

This started when I was getting "pumps are unreliable" during a pheasant hunt.  I'm not down on o/u, SxS, or autos (except for the weight of autos).  I now own all, except for an auto; sold my 1100--too heavy and not needed since I learned to shoot.

I like the 500 and its thumb safety, although most guy hate it.  maybe because I started  with SxS I like the thumb safety.  I have   mod 12 in 16 that is the old "proofed steel barrel" model, and it is fine, even if it does only have a single action rod.  The model 12 also has a take-down system that leaves it short in two pieces; I think this is why the Mafia liked this shotgun.

The Browning BPS is a bottom ejector.  Seems to fit me better than the 870.  Kinda pricey, though.

Most third world country police forces pack 870, a last word in fighting reliability. I would guess that if it would drop a bad guy, it can sure as HELL knock birds down, not to mention the thousands of sporting clays that I have dusted, along with trap and skeet.  Wait, I didn't touch on Benellis. Those are some of the best autoloaders out there and I particularly like the M1 Super 90...........................................Kingpin

the 870 12 ga and two barrels made this trip.  28 modified for a 300 bird pheasant tower shoot.   took a short barrel with a poly-choke for anything else, with a red dot sight.  got 20 slug and 25 buckshot.

Brought 300 rounds of win #5 .  i think the 870 will do it all here.

added 50 rounds for the double barrel 8x57, and threw in a 38 snubby just for 2 legged predators
