Just thinking about it.
I have Mechanical advance distributor on order for my VW 1600 motor. The vacuum advance just won't advance to the 28* OTDC at 3000 rpm to get the Full hp. I'm looking at maybe a 2 barrel to add a few more ponies. Can I just get an adapter and put it on and go? Something like a 5200 Holley or a slimier small car carb. I have a ( I think ) p34 one now. What increase could I expect ? ![]() ![]() ![]() Edited by d4570 - 19 December 2018 at 15:07 |

Did you go with single point setup or duel point with manual advance? Does it have adjustable weights and springs?
I never have messed with bug motors, back in the day, I had Rupp trike, with Corvair spyder turbo, power plant. It had stretched springer and would lift the front with each gear change and when turbo would kick in. |

On the carb, unless you change the exhaust, to breath better, you won't gain a lot. Headers are cheaper and easier fix, to gain horsepower. With stock exhaust, you're choking it down. Next step would be intake, aftermarket ones decrease the restriction and turbulence, giving you much better flow.

My guys at Thesamba site https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/Say that a single point with manual advance Is all you need with out changing the motor with Higher performance parts.
But the simple changing from a 1 to a 2 barrel could increase The HP as much as 10% and with the timing advanced to the max of 28* could bring up the HP to maybe near 70 over the rated 60 hp. CHEAP HP. But they did not tell me if it's just a simple adapter and bolt on fix. I made Headers to the proper length and size, I guess a VW 1600cc is better served with the right amount of back presser.

A duel point, with manual advance, allows you to start motor, with "retarded" timing, hit switch and advance it 15-20 degrees, @ top rpms. I don't have experience with bugs, other than what I've seen on others. Normally you have to match intake and exhaust, to get max power.
