Guys, I went to the range today with my Savage NRA 19 target rifle. I bought it a couple of years ago at a gun show as a package deal. It had a BSA 6-24X40 on it. The trigger has been done and it's a nice shooting gun. My best 25 yard .22 BR round has been 243/250 with 11Xs. Today I shot a 232/250 3X. But I haven't been out with it for 6 months. The problem with this thing is obviously the scope. I also did some 50 yard shooting with it today and when she's locked right on in the bags, and I move my head around, the scope has a good 1.5" of parallax both side to side and up and down when set at 8X. I also shot a 100 yard group the was about 3" around. I'm positive that this is the result of the parallax. This scope has one feature I really like and that's the fact that it has a small dot in the center of the crosshairs. When it's set on 8X the dot is just the right size to see a small white ring around the outside of the dot when it's centered on the white BR bull. Do any of you have a similar set up and what brand of scope do you use? I've also shot some sillouhettes (sp) with it so I like the magnification. I'd want external knobs and the center dot reticle but I don't want to spend a fortune on it either. I know Leupolds are the best but I'd have 3 times more in the scope than I do in the gun. Any other recommendations? RD

Rockydog, I was having trouble with a couple of my scopes for a while with parallax. When shooting at 100 yards I'd set the objective lens on 100 yards, but I'd still get moving crosshairs. After moving the adjustment setting a little closer and then a little farther I'd find a spot where the crosshairs are locked on the target. Seems two of my scopes like to be set about 30 to 40 yards beyond the scopes marked setting. On the cheaper side of scopes that you're looking for I like the Weaver V series. They have a 4-16x40 PA with a dot recticle and low profile target knobs. http://www.riflescopes.com/products/849410/weaver_4-16x42_cl assic_v16_series_rifle_scope.htm There's also a 6-24 with a dot. http://www.riflescopes.com/products/849411/weaver_6-24x42_cl assic_v24_series_rifle_scope.htm |
