i guess my hangup w/ the 17 hmr's is/was the cost of non-reloadable ammo... so, i'd like to know if those that play w/ the 17 hmr find the price of ammo to be a steep burden? i haven't priced ammo for this in awhile, so i would imagine that it has gotten more affordable, but, don't know... have passed by the 17's many times at the gun shops and had an impure thought or two cross my mind... but there's usually a centerfire something nearby to cleanse it!
Hunting is not a matter of life or death; it is much more important than that.

Max & Dakotasin;

Just last week or so ( jeez, maybe a little longer ago than that ) I bought my shiney new Remington model 591 in 5mm magnum.  Long 'bout Friday they quit making the ammo!

What it actually was, was a .2045 rimfire bottleneck cartridge pushing a 38 gr bullet at a muzzle velocity of 2100 fps.  That's Gun Digest published data, I didn't have a chronometer at the time I owned the gun.

As you might imagine, it was a pretty hot little item that I really liked.  I'd like to see what it'd do with the poly-tip type of bullets the .17 has, as they'd be significantly lighter than the 38 grain originals.

So, once bitten, twice shy for me.  I'll stick with the .22lr & save my money for the .338 Winmag of the future.

900F,

Does that mean NO AMMO available at all????  Is your gun a wall hanger only????  Or is this one of those, Rem will make it every 5 years or so so folks can stock up then Rem stops for another 5 years???

If so it sucks big time.....shame on Remington.

Just out of curiousity, I did a quick check over on GunBroker for those 5mm rimfires.  Some rifles available and two auctions for ammo.  10 boxes on one (500 rnds) and 1 box on another (50 rnds).  Starting bid?  $700 for the first (=ing $1.40 per rnd) and $79.76 for the second (=ing $1.59 per rnd).  Ouch!!!

By the way, DAKOTASIN, $8.99 ($.18 per rnd) is the cheapest I've walked into a store over here in MT and walked out with a box of HMR ammo for.  I've heard of internet deals where it's cheaper per box, but after shipping and all, not much.  It has been a while since I've looked at local prices.  I might be pleasantly suprised.

From what I understand, the HMR rifles that were sold in the first 6 months of existence would make it a money making venture for current ammo producers to continue producing, even if rifle manufacturing were to have stop immediately back then.  Wonder how many have been sold since that first 6 months?  With more and more firearm makers investing in the HMR's staying power, I venture it'll be here for a good long time.  The 5mm never had any backing from the firearm producers, let alone the buying public.  The HMR has both.  In the end, if I'm wrong, what the heck.  I've got a stockpile of ammo (continually growing, I might add) that I'll be able to retire on by selling on GunBroker    .  Later.  >>  klallen

Still fun
