Ok guys, now that i ahve the ok to go ahead with the .300 win mag, i have to figure out what i want to put on it as far as optics go. I am leanings towards a Leupold VX1 4-12x40 or a Bushnell 3200 4-12x40AO. I would consider in price range up to 300 dollars, but want around that power range. I would also consider the Weaver Grand Slam 4.5-14x40AO. Any other good scopes in that price range?

Stick with a good all around scope... Leupold VX2 3x9x40.  Plenty of scope for your .300.  Heck, I only have a Vari X II 2x7 on mine.
Y'all shoot straight!!!

vx-2 3-9x, or 4-12x... if you aren't afraid of used, the vx-3's and varix-3's can be had for about $300... the 4.5-14 i picked up last fall cost me $275...

I have to agree with the choices listed so far, all will work just fine.

Scopes, in my opinion, should be based more off of what the rifle is going to be used for rather than the caliber it's chambered for.  Lighting, weight, expected shot distance, etc. are all big factors as you're well aware of.  With the magnums I also require them to be something of good mechanical quality.  I've seen the economy Trashco's and Bushnells get the guts rattled out of them and break on a 300 Win Mag.

One brand you didn't mention was Sightron.  I'd give them a look too if they're in the price range you can work within.

For me, I'd pick the following:

#1 Choice:  Leupold VX II 4.5-14? X 40

#2 Choice:  Weaver Grand Slam 4.5-14X

#3 Choice:  Sightron SII Series

#4 Choice:  Leupold VX I OR Bushnell 3200 or 4200

That would be my ranking.
