.460 S&W Magnum ???

Evening BSB'ers  >>  Seems like we've weathered the .500 S&W Magnum storm alright.  I'm sure there are some that have tried it.  Maybe some own one.  Others might just be plain scared of it.  The biggest, baddest revolver round out there.  Now there's this little offering     ...     the fastest, flattest shooting big bore revolver cartridge.  200 gr. spitzer type bullet at 2300+ fps?  That's faster then what a .30-30's doing with it's 150 gr. bullet, isn't it?  And from a 7 1/2" barrel?  Hmmmmm.  Seems like this one would be more practical in a handgun then the .500, but still.  Being interested in all things ballistic, there is appeal here, but ...........     I guess if ya felt ya needed more then a .454 Casull and still wanted to stay in the caliber class, this would be the one to get.  Honestly, I was happy with 1400+ fps from the Casull and a 395 gr. LBT.  Advertising an added 150 fps or so over that.  Yowsers !!!  I am kinda curious what that new Hornady 200 gr. SST would do in the Casull.  Hornady claims 1850 fps with their 240 gr. XTP.  Might be able to sneak 2000 fps.  Not a fan of Hornady bullets but could be an interesting little load development project that would put the ballistics of the Casull into a whole new realm, as well.

I still think a better platform for either of these massive offerings is in a lever action rifle, but I guess that's why I'm not the one making the decisions.

 I didn't get excited about the 500, and after reading the article in Shooting Times, can't say the 460 does much to get me wound up. I would like to see what that 200 gr bullet would do from the 45 colt. But I'm thinking that bullet is going to come up just a bit short in the sectional density to do a reliable job of penetrating at longer ranges.

 Like you Klallen I think a rifle would be a better platform for either of those 2 cartridges.

the 460... hmm, the idea is starting to grow on me. gotta admit, there is something nifty about using full-power 454 casull loads for your plinking ammo!

the 500... wow! lots of fun, but i have no desire for one. many rifles are lighter and faster to get on target than that massive x-frame, though i think the 'holy buckets!' factor is extremely high when displaying an x-frame.

and here i thought my 480 was really somethin'!

I think the .500 S&W in a 4" is counter productive. These are high performance cartridges that need some decient barrel length to muster up some steam. 4" don't cut it, not in a .500. It'll work ok, but your sacrificing too much. That 2.5" Ruger Super Redhawk Alaskan in .454 Casull is a joke. Like putting Go-Kart wheels on a Ferrari. For what??? Keep the barrels long, and the sight radius decient, and you've got something. Chop everything off and all you've got is an uncontrollable monster with all bark and zero bite.  billt

I've never worn mine on the hip, but this holster is a nice shoulder rig for the price.  billt

Just got through reading about this in the latest Guns & Ammo that a buddy of mine brought into work yesterday.

This 460 S&W is a hoss!  Like the ability to chamber various cartridges through it - 454 Cassull and 45 Colt.  The thing is a hand howitzer though at 73? ounces!  Made for "long range handgunning" this might be a new standard in wheelgun performance. 

In conclusion, one MIGHT find it's way back home with me one day since I've kinda given up on the 480 Ruger pursuit.
