evening, all.

on another site, i've spent the last couple days watching as a member there is having a ball getting aquainted with his newly purchased .40s&w.  i've really enjoyed watching this.  and of course, always on the look-out for my next "must have" purchase, watching him has got me thinking i'm due.

so the thought process began.

back in 2008, i purchased a nib glock 21 simply for the frame that would be the donor foundation for my .50gi.  that project worked out very well but what it left me was a complete .45acp slide that's been stored away in the factory box ever since.

soooo, it was time to do something with that.

i'd watch my brother kinda flail away with a .400 corbon on a ria1911 frame with less then pleasing results.  i had actually purchased an ria1911 identical to his to do the same upgrade but opted out of it seeing what he was experiencing.  i always wanted the corbon performance but not the 1911 headache he seemed to be having.  enter the g21 as the answer i was looking for.

friday night, i called my bro to pick his brain a bid on where he'd go for the components i would need.

a complete frame off gunbroker would be the easy part.  as cheap as any offered through other distributors so an auction was won and it's on the way.

somewhere in the course of our conversation, my brother asked if i'd ever heard of the .40super.  i had heard of the round but didn't know of the specifics.  he enlightened me.  basically a .400corbon on steroids.  based off a shortened .45winmag case.  where the corbon and 10mm auto could get a 135 moving along at 1400 fps, the super with the same bullet reached 1800 fps.  huh.  needless to say, i was more then intrigued.  i was hooked at 1800 fps.  lol.

so, what i'm envisioning is a threaded lone wolf 6.02" .40super drop-in barrel and one of their 4-port 10mm compenstors.  warnings abound of feeding issues with the factory 13-round double stack magazines so to remedy, a couple single stack 10-round numbers.

quick look showed that .40super dies of any flavor weren't all that cheap.  so, i'm thinking of going a little different route.  buy a .400corbon set.  when i need to fl size, use my .45winmag die.  then size the neck and bump the shoulder, if needed, with the corbon die.  it's how i'm doing cases for the .357/.10mm wildcat i've got (10mm fls die and .357sig combo) and that's working perfectly.

i have a charter arms double action revolver in the oop 9mm federal that's been tempting me for some time now, that's kind of making me think twice about which direction i want to go with the handgun craving but i really think this super's where i'm headed.

we'll get some pics up as it comes together.

minor change of plans with this little project ... after some time on the lone wolf site, i couldn't find a 6" barrel in .40super offered that's factory threaded and ready for the compensator. makes zero sense with their 10mm's and .40s&w's set up as such, but what can ya do.

sooo ... easy solution. and kind of a blessing, really. i wasn't all keen on the idea of having the barrel hang out the end of the g21 slide as far as it would. my minds eye say a gap of barrel between where the compensator ended and then the barrel went into the slide. and it just never looked that good. what we have to do should address this. i have a standard, non-threaded .40super barrel on it's way. once we get it up to the shop, we'll take some measurements and just cut the thing down do that the attached compensator's as flush to the muzzle of the slide as we want. it'll be threaded here and presto.

i gotta get some components on the way real quick, too. need to put something together so i have something to test the handgun with once she's together.

i'm pretty excited about this one. should be a neat round on a neat platform if it all comes together as planned.

got the lone wolf delivery yesterday around 7pm.  didn't even know ups delivered that late.  very speedy delivery from the lone wolf fellers.  i am impressed.

obviously, the clean look, as mentioned in the previous post, would be to have the barrel shortened by an inch or so and the compensator fitted to snug up to the muzzle of the slide.

but if i choose to keep the barrel at it's delivered length, this is basically what i'd be dealing with :

i want to get it on the frame, once that delivers, before i make any final decisions, but i really don't mind the look of the extended barrel like i thought i would. i've always thought stainless steel was a classy look. maybe that's what's doing it. the exposed portion's stainless. plus, this is a cartridge purchased for it's performance potential. another reason i'm leaning towards not messing with the 6"'s of barrel.

hmmmm .............................

evening, all.  i got all the work finished today.  I really like the decision to keep the barrel full length :

all of my handloading components showed up late yesterday so i was up till 1 last night and back up at 4:30 this morning preping 100 and getting my initial strings loaded.  after getting the work done and the hours of conversation that usually take up shooting time when me and my brother hook up, i didn't feel like setting up the range so that i could get velocity and accuracy results.  but i wanted to shoot the thing so bad, i just couldn't help myself.

so i grabbed my first string, 4 rounds with 15.0 grs of aa#9 under the 180 gr hornady xtp.  i hated wasting the string without getting any data but i had to scratch the itch.  loaded them up in the 13-round mag and stepped out behind the shop.  a much needed test run, as reports ran rampent about poor feeding performance of this round out of the double stack.  i'd boughten a single 10 just in case i experienced the issues also.  but     ...     i didn't.  4 rounds fed, fired and extracted as nice as ya please.  the rest of my testing will be done out of the 13 to see if any issues present themselves down the line.

i've no clue where the velocities were for this 1st string.  referencing numbers i got through the e-mail from the fella who ran initial testing of this cartridge back in the 90's, i should have been around 1350 fps, but who knows.  the spent cases were dropping at my feet so this load wasn't working the slide overly aggressively and launching the cases.  17 grs is supposedly the max load yielding 1500 fps.  i have five more strings that take my up to 16.6 grs so we'll see what that gets me at the next range session.

starting to get myself a nice little collection of bottleneck handgun cartridges :

( l / r  :  7.62 tok / .357 sig / .357.10mm auto / .40 super )

always thought my .400 cal bottleneck would be the cor-bon     ...     but this one will do just fine.

i've heard lots of conversation about how difficult bottleneck handgun cartridge can be to handload for.  it's always puzzled me as i've experienced none of that.  each has proven to be quite easy to work with.  hope this super falls in line as the first three did.

evening, all.

the wife was good enough sunday morning to let me go out and get some shooting in before the "mothers day" festivities began.

i started early and had a good morning of shooting.  started with the final session of development, confirming velocities and function of the handloads, for the 9mmwinmag, .375supermag, .41ae and .45gap.  all went very well and i'm happy with the finalized versions of each load.

i then kicked off 3 development projects for an amt automag v .50ae, bersa thunder45 .45acp and the glock 21 .41super highlighted in this string.

i get a kick out of every project i do, but i was very excited for this .40super development.  it was a handgun and cartridge combo a long time coming.  as i mentioned earlier, i shot my initial string testing the function of the gun when it was all put together last weekend, so my second string (4-shots), which was 15.5 grs. of aa#9, would be my first shot over the chrony.  here's how things panned out using hornady's 180 gr xtp :

  • 15.5 grs = 1359 fps
  • 16.0 grs = 1418 fps
  • 16.2 grs = 1441 fps
  • 16.4 grs = 1462 fps
  • 16.6 grs = 1507 fps

even with the compensator / brake, this light g21 is lively.  far from uncontrollable, but you certainly know when you've pulled the trigger.  everything fed flawlessly.  and that performance     ...     mercy.  a 180 at 1500+ fps is a pretty serious handload for a .40 cal cartridge.  i love it.  gotta look at the spent cases now.  i'll pop primers here in the next few day to see how the pockets responded to the high level of pressure this cartridges functions at.

i'm still learning the handgun / cartridge combo, but to this point, it's flat out awesome.  there's no other way to describe it.

only thing i'm disappointed in at this point is myself, waiting so long to get this thing put together.
