Little Sadie (Traditional)

I was out one night for to make my rounds,

Met my little Sadie and I blowed her down,

I went home, went to bed

.44 smokeless under my head.

Woke up the next mornin' at half past nine,

Hacks and buggies all standin' in a line,

Gents and Gamblers gatherin' 'round,

takin little Sadie to her buryin' ground.

I began to think what a deed I done,

Grabbed my hat and away I run,

sherriff and posse where ever I go,

overtook me in Jericho.

I was standin' on a corner jus' readin' my bill,

up jumped the sherriff from Thomasville,

he said young man your name is Brown,

remember the night you shot Sadie down?

I said yes sir my name is Lee,

I murdered little Sadie in the first degree,

first degree, second degree,

if you got any papers boy read 'em to me.

Well, they took me downtown and dressed me in black,

put me on a train and sent me back,

sent me back along the rail,

sent back to the Thomasville jail.

Judge and jury they took their stand,

judge had the papers in his right hand,

forty one days, forty one nights,

I got forty one years with the ball and stripes.

I was out one night for to make my rounds,

Met my little Sadie and I blowed her down,

I went home, went to bed

.44 smokeless under my head.
