Today, I went to the trap range for some R&R. I took my Model 12 Win, with a 30 inch barrel, full choke, and simmons rib. When I got there I was told that the traps were broken. Rather than go home, I took an invitation to shoot a little skeet. When we were walking to the range, a guy asked me if my trap gun had interchangeable chokes. Well it didn't and I shot it anyway. I didn't take it very serious, and shot 3, scores of 19, which to my way of thinking wasn't too bad, as I normally shoot a skeet1 choke in my Rem 1100 for about a 23/24 average. Has anyone here ever shot skeet with a full choke shotgun? I found it to be very interesting and pretty good practice. What do you think?...........Kingpin

KP, I've never shot skeet with one but I can attest to the fact that an incoming "mini" on a sporting clays course simply evaporates at a range of about 10 feet when hit dead square with a full choke load of 8s. Actually it was good protection as the guys with open chokes were getting pelted with pieces. Then again if you missed totally there wasn't much time to duck and cover. RD

I shoot a lot of sporting clays, and practice some on trap and skeet fields beacuse they are close to me. I am very inconsistent at skeet, usually shooting 21-23 and it doesn't matter whether I use a full choke or a skeet choke. With the full, most of the breaks inkball, which is cool. I now shoot mod at all sporting targets. I gain more birds by turning off my brain than I lose due to having the wrong choke.
Chokes give you inches, you miss by feet.

Hey Kingpin. A question for you a little of the topic but along the same lines. Who was that guy that used to throw 12 skeets in the the air at the same time and shoot them all before they hit the ground? Another guy beat his record but some people didnt think the record should of been given to him as he used a semi automatic shotgun instead of a pump like the first guy? Ive never skeet nor trap shot before but just reading your post got me thinking about those guys. It was quite a few years ago when i saw it on t.v. so it wasnt a recent thing.

Gary, I believe you are thinking of Tom Knapp, who shoots for Benelli. And yes he uses a pump with an extended tube.

The next question is: Who was the guy that shot someting like 1600 hand tossed 4x4 pine blocks in a row without a miss or malfuntion through a Remington Nylon 66 .22 auto? I can see a picture in my mind of him sitting on something like a large pick up load sized pile of blocks. RD

The answer is Tom Fry, but it wasn't 1600, he actually shot at 100,000 of them hand thrown. It took him 6 days of shooting in Las Vegas, he had 6 rifles lined up on the table, guys keeping them loaded, and 6 other guys throwing until they got tired. During his breaks, he shot black birds on the wing. He shot all the skin off his trigger finger and kept it working by applying spray skin. I have the original article, from 1956 I believe. If I knew how to scan it and post it I would. His best run without a miss was 32,000 I think, and he drilled the 100,000th one dead center. There is even a picture of him sitting on the pile of 2" pine cubes. His cheek was raw after that. It was sponsored by Remington to promote their new model 66 and Tom Fry was one of their hired shooters of the time. I will dig out more specifics about it if anyone is interested. I know EXACTLY where the article is.

As far as the shotgunner is concerned, I saw him once, do that trick when I was a kid. I am racking my brain to remember his name. I even got his autograph, but God knows where it is now. I was 8 at the time.........................Kingpin
