practical knife for self defense

In my state, a knife carried as a weapon is illegal.  They're all "tools" if you know what's smart.  We don't have CCW licenses, we have CHL licenses (Concealed Handgun License).  Even in self defense, using a blade can get you in trouble if it is determined that you were carrying it as a weapon to begin with.   Of course, getting killed because you don't have a weapon can even be more troublesome.

UPDATE!!! I just found out that many wasp sprays are very effective. They spray a stream about 20' and can be very effective on idiots, up to and including paraylization temporarily until the cops arrive. It's not premeditated, because anyone can have trouble with wasps. Keep a can handy by each door and maybe even one in the car. The cans are big, and I would think too large to carry in the average purse...............Kingpin+
