After 35 years my B&L binoculars died. Today that is Bushnell, and they don't honor any of their lifetime waranties, nor repair.

I want a pair of 8x40-42, in the $200-350 range.  I prefer porro prism models as they gather more light, brighter
Any pros or cons appreciated.

Dang, I looked all over.
Apparently not made anymore, I have theses Redfield Renegade 10X50.
VERY good a bit heavy to pack around a lot but for spotting bear and elk there good, better for truck glass.

Does Leopold offer them in there name?

Bear, I am not sure about the prism thing, but I bought a pair of Leupold Alpines last year. Took them out west this summer and really liked them. I have an older pair of Acadia that work well. I bought them 10yrs ago when we went hunting in ID, but the newer Alpines are a little better. They are in the $250 range. I also, around here somewhere, bought a smaller pair of Yosemite, they are pretty nice too for the price. I gave them to my youngest son and he has misplaced them...Angry Now none of these are the quality (or price) of some of the German brands, or the higher end Leupolds for that matter, but we don't use them a lot here, for the most part just when we head out west hunting.

the Yosemite were porro prism, no longer made, good glass.

The alpines are the newer roof prism, smaller and different 'feel'.  But my choises are limited....might not be able to find porro prism model in 8x42.

Missed a Ziess pair for 100 bucks at auction a month ago, like NIB. Just short on cash and wasn't really in the market for them. Picked up a NIB 1911 in 9mm instead

...oh yeah! thats gonna hurt!

Glass has improved in the last 35 years. You might be surprised by a set of roof prism binoculars.

I have Leupold in the price range you are looking at. I really like them. I've had them for 8-10 years.

Pulled the trigger.

Busnell said they don't repair and binoc, if factory fault, they may replace.  Mine are too old.

So I bought a pair of
Leupold BX-2 Alpine HD Binoculars - 8x42

Decided based  upon comments here, my past experience with Leupold scopes, and their Lifetime warranty.

Gave up on finding better porro prism optics.  sort of like learning to live without v-8 engines and make do with 4 cylinder and 10 speed transmission (or Honda's belt drive 'thing').

I'm looking forward to your review.

I'm thinking about getting a new pair of binoculars. After hunting with my grandaughter the last few days and watching her fight with her aunts old binos that I bought her when she was 12, I'm thinking about giving her some for an early Christmas gift.

A quick review on the Leupold BX-2 Alpine HD 8x42 binoculars.

All you comments were appreciated, thought a quick review might help Crocket and others. As roof prism glasses they are long and the balance is cantelevered out, so they feel heavier to hold than poro prism glasses weighing more. That unfortunately will be the same for all roof prism glasses.

They look robust and well made. During my shopping I looked thru 20+ pair ($120-4500). found most all glass was very good, and could not say the glass in any was significantly better than another. Today glass is pretty great, and only difference is color balance. And that diffenence is very, very slight; and might only be important to good eyed birdwatchers where slight color difference is important to id a bird.

For what they are, Roof prism binoculars, I rate these at a 8+. These came with a chest harness and a paded case.....the case is fine but harness is junk. It is just poor webbing, no elastic and too small for my 165# and 42 inch chest, might fit a child.

I rated the glass by looking across the valley to the next ridge (1/2 mile) and viewing the tree leaves. These were easily distinuished individially.

I'd buy these again. and while they are made in china, I do put trust in the Leupold name.

Got the Kowa.

good quality glass.  The mechanicals seem fine.  thesse are small binocs and are very comfortable to hold, for me.

They are 6x30 so I don't expect then to be great long distance glasses, but perrfect to wear all day hanging from my neck and holding/glassing for 5-10 minutes straight.

I would buy them again.  might even use them more than my new leupold because of their handinest.

Further review on the Leupold.  Harness was terrible.  I cut it off completely.  will make new.

Kowa comes with a neoprene soft strap and a black soft case.  Been testing the Kowa for 2 hours, wearing it on chest then pulling them up and looking 50-150 outdoors.  It takes a while for me to adjust binocs, possible eye prroblems/blindness is a cause.  But after hours, both the leupold and Kowas are working good.

I'll look at the Leupolds. That might be perfect for her and the distances we hunt.

Thanks again.
