hey, folks -
i've got a few good freinds here, and i have some bad news to share.
my mother found out today that she has skin cancer. i don't know much about it, but my understanding is that skin cancer can be one of the milder cancers, or it can be one of the worst kinds, depending on factors. it seems that this one is somewhere in between, but i don't know much at the moment.
in any case, i am not normally a person who gets all public about these things, but it is my mother, and i must say that C word is really something terrible to hear.
as the title says, thoughts or prayers would be appreciated.

hey, guys - many, many thanks for the prayers and good wishes. it looks like they are doing some good! latest word is that it's a type that is definitely treatable. i can't pronounce it but it is not the super easy one and it is not the one that is devastating - it's in-between. it also starts on the surface and works down, so if it is caught in time, it is totally treatable. thanks to all, i mean that sincerely ~ ron |

My mom had it on her nose. It was deep and they took a deep cut off. But she came through fine and lived another 20 years, until Alzheimer's disease took her.

Having a number of family and friends that have had cancer, I have more than average exposure to it. Most cancer if caught early is treatable. Chemo and radiation work, the biggest issue is keeping the person's moral upbeat. Your job is to encourage your mother, she is going to have bad days during treatment, everyone does. The trick is to get her thru the bad days knowing better days are coming. Plan ahead for the bad days, what you can do to help her, things she likes to do, meals that she likes etc. Don't get upset if she lashes out at you on a bad day, again that a normal part of the treatment. Most of all keep faith that everything will be fine because most likely it will be. Good Luck MT |

Being diagnosed with cancer is a shock regardless of the flavor. I'll never forget the day the doctor told me about mine. It is a distinct challenge for the individual and will require strength, patience and prayers of the entire family.
May He keep her in one hand and the family and medical personnel in the other. |

Taz; I've had two skin cancers removed this year. The most recent one today. Both of mine were easily treatable by excision. But, all those years at high altitude with high U.V. on the slopes are being paid for now. 900F |

Sorry to hijack this thread.
My Father passed away from cancer a week ago today on the 13th. In the beginning the Doctors gave him about seven years. He lasted thirteen. The grandkids never knew him without it. Too many people suffering with this crap. It's an epidemic. DD |

DD - I'm sorry to hear about the loss of your dad and agree - cancer is one of the most vile things imaginable. One of these days they will eradicate it, but until then, all we can do is hate what it does to our loved ones. cb - glad you came through ok; my mom's turned out to be the less-severe kind also. thanks to everyone for the well wishes - ron |
