There are just tooooo many crows around.  I'd say by a factor of 10!

These bast%$ds also carry west niles disease.  When is the federal government going to lift the limit on these and recognise the disease pest they are?????

yes, To Many crows. We use to shoot them but I don't know if it's legal in Montana any more? I think they are put in the same category as  vaulters

Federal law gives the US a maximum of 120 days shooting.  In Pennsylvania you can only shoot on fri-Sunday.  season started last fri.

bear:CROWS !!!!!!!!!!! our crow season opens aug.1.... me and the kids cant wait... you cant ask for more fun... with all the rules they have on ducks you cant beat a good crow hunt. i have found that the best place to set up is right next to the city limit signs. we got it down  .. we drive around inbetteew seasons scouting for flyways. when we find a good 1 we hit it fast. drop off the dec's and the caller and park the truck.. got a 12 ft. pole to hang the dec's in the trees. and turn on the caller. cant wait..... i have a kick ass crow load i use.. drops them out to 50 yds with a full choke...  cant wait .. you dnt know what you are missing.. the only other way to hunt crows is to find a feild and sit and pop them with a rifle. one spot you can get 15-20 crows in.. then move to the next spot.. they lern fast though.

Mr. Mom,

i hunt deer and geese inside the metro area (legally, but tough).  There are so many crows I avoid the 'hassle factor' of urban folks.   I just drive to the farms and look for a hundred or so in a field.  if i have the 222 I shoot about 3-4 before they get wise.  On shotgun days, i merely drive to the next ridge, setup the owl and 5 crow decoys....unpack the double 10 guage magnum, load it with 3 1/2 lead 4#.  Turn the electronic call on max and wait for 6 minutes.

The 'scout' always comes first.  there is two schools of thought:

1st-- let him fly dack to bring the rest in.

2nd school--- says kill him and the others will come to investigate.

I definitely belong to the 2nd school.  Dead crows tell no tails (tales??).  It is amazing how good their eye sight is.  I bury myself against a big tree and wear only cloths that match the bark color.  They can spot BDUs for 3 miles in a hardwood forest.

They are considered a game bird here, no rifles and need a small game license. I think our season is coming up soon, don't remember when for sure. I have fun going up in the pines and calling them in, I can get a dozen or so circling over me, it can be a blast. I should find out when the season opens and take the shotgun with next time.

bear: we have lerned to go to rule # 2 also.. first 1 in get it. i like to hunt in the early spring.. we get 2 hunts. NO BUGS. but the season ends the last of march be for the nest.  here in michigan the have been having crow hunting contest.. me and the kids have tryed but never won. but what the hell , it was fun. it cost 2 bucks for a 2 man team.. they would hold it on the last saterday befor closeing. most birds won 350.00 and the lagest crow was worth 100.00.. then each team member got a raffle ticket good for  eather a rifle or shotgun they were giveing away. last hunt they had there were 80 teams. the # 1 team had 75 crows.. but there was cheating going on, so they stopped the contests.  we have found a new spot at the state park.. it is open to hunting by state rule, but the local bird watching group think they own it...

Crows,

The way I hunt them has been pretty much as some of you described when we go with the electronic call.

Personally, I prefer shooting them with rifles but BEAR is right that it doesn't take long for them to wise up!

In West Virginia they're protected, just like every other state, and there's a season unless they are "a nuisance crow" and they can be shot at any time.  What the heck determines a nuisance crow?  They're all a nuisance in my opinion but try telling that to USFWS!  Anywhoo, I think it's a silly regulation.  We have fun shooting them though!

my father-in law told me how when he was a kid they would shoot them for bounty and take the money and get shells for the up comming duck seasom. on a real foggy day we go to the beach hills and the are flying low , you can get them with a .410... they say they use to roost in those hills , the they came along and blasted all the trees that they roosted in.most we ever got in half a day hunt was 18.. lot of road work.. best in 1 spot was 17 , but it was a 3 hour wait over a sweetcorn feild. we get 2 mths. in the fall and 2 mths in the early spring befor they nest.  the mexicans love it when we have a bunch of dead crows in the back of the truck..  you got to give it a try t.t.u.

I set out decoys to give them something to home in on when I'm calling. "Death Cry of a Crow" has always been my favorite. Started out using a Johnny Stewart that played a .45rpm record and ran off D batteries. My set-up these days is a little more advanced. Like MM says, ya gotta try them. I like the breast simmered in mushroom soup all day in a slow-cooker.

here is the way we work it..... first thing in the morning  .. i like to sleep in... but we set up just befor the sun comes up. we set up about 12 crow dec's and the last thing we set is the owl. we get the crow dec's up as high as we can , then set the owl in the middle on a post. i plug in a crow and owl fight tape. it get them going and they come in fast.. we also us mouth calls. we can get alot of volume out with those. after we get a few on the ground i switch to a wounded crow or the death cry tape. i have i think 6 crow tapes. everytime i see a new 1 out i have to get it.. latter in the day we use a single excited crow tape and no decoys. they will come in for a look.. we change chokes from mod. in the morning to full in the afternoon.. if anybody wants to check out a site , try www.crowbuster.com. they have what all the types of crow hunting stuff and diffrent set ups. my son took 1 of those weasel balls they had for the cat toy. he painted it black and got some rubber craft foam and made a rubber crow, then he glued it to the ball. when you turn it on and it flops on the ground it looks real.. cb told me 1 time to take a boonie hat and fill it with grass and put some golf balls in it to make it look like a nest.. sounds good but havent tryed it yet. crow hunting is a blast and the kids love it. also if you want to be a smart ass, take a dead crow or 2 and put it in a neighbor hood of a guy you cant stand. they will think there is a west nile out break.  ive dont it at our beach.. it keeps some of the out of staters out..  hope i dont sound like cj on this 1....

I have never hunted crow but have considered shoot'n at them many times, as they are common sight where we do our rockchuck hunting.  We hesitated as, for some reason, we seemed to recall hearing something about scavanger birds being protected by some law.  We had no proof of this nor really looked into it; we just never shot at them.

Out of curiousity, cause of this string, I wrote the state to see what the legalities of crow hunting were.

Kinda strange.  I guess here in MT, crow are covered by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act.  As such, to be legally hunted, an authorized season must be established. The MT FWP Commission has asked the Wildlife Division of the US Fish & Wildlife Service to do an environmental assessment (EA), looking into the options of establishing a MT crow season.  I got a phone # reaching the biologist doing the EA and was told he'd know more about the likelihood of such a season becoming reality.  May give a call.  Either way, as of the e-mail this afternoon, MT has no season established, so, hunting crow here is prohibited by law.

A crow season ???  Just sounds silly.  Later.  >>  klallen

klallen: long time ago when i started to hunt , there was no closed season on crows. when my kids got old enough to hunt that was 1 of the first things they checked into.  cane to fined out there is a season now. something like 180 days. ours is made up of 2 seasons. 1 in the fall and 1 in the early spring befor nesting.  i have herd that there was a treaty signed with mexico because the were protected there and not here, and the same for the duck the fly to mexico and the had a loose limit on the ducks. so they came up with this. 1 thing we have to watch out here is we get a few ravins.. big ass crows.

Bear,

West nile kills crows dead just like jay's and hawks 'n such.

Spot...

P.S.  I don't kill'em too much, frankly 'cause I'm tired of eat'n 'em.  They taste like hell warm, so I usually let it get cold, and then it ain't much better.  Guess I've 'et too much when I was under 40, and it's spoilt my taste fer them now.

BEAR,

I met up with your son, BEAR CUB, on Sat.  We went to a gun show in the area.  It's kind of funny... he mentioned your crow hunting experiences to me and next thing I know you're posting about it.  A friend of mine went with us to the gun show and he has hunted crows before.  He agrees with you - when the first crow comes in, unload on him until he is dead.  Hit him with everything you have, otherwise you won't be hunting any crows in that area.

Y'all shoot straight!!!

Moose,

The kid said you guys went to the gun show.  No purchases.....he is saving for a condo down payment.  I guess he intends to stay in the Knowville area...I can't blame him.

Once those black birds 'make' you...they tell all their buddies.

Here is another way,

Take one accurate rifle and bipod and set up (pick a yardage) away from a prominent tree. Have the driver place the electronic caller at the base of the tree. He also covers the shooter with a piece of sheet (snow on the ground) or burlap depending upon the cover, and hurries away to watch. The incomers will circle the sound but won't be able to see anything going on. After a short time they will land in the tree wondering what in blazes is making all that racket. POW! This works perfectly in our prairie country where an elevated shot is not a problem. The shooter is completely hidden and far enough away to get in a few shots. Dead crows on the ground sweeten the pot.

I have always wanted to stake out a cat, a white one maybe, with a crow decoy, out in a pasture and see what happens with the J Stewart caller going off.

In spite of the Federal law, out state allows a crow who is 'depredating, or about to depredate' crops or livestock to be shot, regardless of season. And we are blessed with some sensible law enforcement people on the ground.

i have herd from some of the old guys that putting a cat in the nest of a crow will bring them in fast. but 1 of the things my father-in law said they did along time ago was to get a wounded crow and tie twine around its foot and hang it in a tree.  that is a good 1 , but when you tell the kids to ring its neck and put it in the bag with the others and you get to the check in for the contest. then dump them out for a count and the 1 comes back to life and i am flying it like a kits and trying to get away. all those pepole buying pizza and wine for the night are looking like what the hell.
