I finally got to shoot my Ruger m77mk2 lefty bolt action in .30-06 today!!!!!!! It shoots really well. I can shoot it better than any other firearm i have ever fired! The recoil is fine. I used Winchester Super-X 150 grain Silvertips and Remington 150 grain Core-Lokts. I must say, those core-lokts are the deadliest mushroom in the woods. The 3rd best part of the rifle, other than accuracy and fit, is the speed that i can throw the bolt. I also dont even notice the trigger when firing, because i am concentrating on sooo much else. I am going to keep the Simmons Pro-Hunter 3-9x40 WA that is on it. I am probably going to do some more sighting in work and just use the 150 grain core-lokts. May do some reloading for it, but i dont have enough time to get all the equipment and work up a load in time for hunting season which is 6 weeks away!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

By the way, i give this ruger...  same with the ammo.

Aw gee . . . another Ruger story!

Hey . . . congratulations NH.  Great rifle!  If you care . . . I would recommend 165 grain ammo . . . a good all around choice.  However, 150 grain will work great for Eastern Whitetail.  180 grain for elk . . . when you come to God's country!  I am currently shooting 165 grain Speer SPBT for all-around use.  I am loading 190 grain Hornaday Interlock for heavier stuff.  Think you will learn to see this rifle as your favorite.

NH,

  Congrat's on finally squeezin off with your new gun.  Ruger's are great, I've owned 4 of them.  Watch those coreloks though, they have problem with jacket seperation.  You may want to go to winchester ammo.

I dont think i will go up against anything tough enough to have any problems with the core-lokt. Mr. Ruger, when he brings his guns to camp, brings all Federals with 130 grain .270's and 150 grain .30-06 and .308's. I may try out the Federal's Hi Shock (i think that is what it is called) or something made by Federal, because they come with those handy cartridge carriers . How about them Speer 150 grain Grand Slams? There is no need to use anything bigger than 150. A big elk where i hunt is about 400 lbs. According to my Lyman 47, the optimum game weight for the .30-06 with a 150 grain pill at 100 yards is 601, which can handle everything where i hunt.

seriously, now... congrats! i hope the rifle provides you w/ much accurate service.

i wouldn't mess around w/ the federal loadings... they are so anemic that they make a 7 mag look slow... just imagine what they'd do to an 06. 'sides, federal brass isn't worth much, either.

don't get locked in to the 150's either... you may be missing some real accuracy available to you w/ different bullets. heavier bullets typically have better bc's, and tougher jackets... just a thought.

NH;

Would I be correct to suppose that you may no longer be so anxious to get rid of the LHB .30-06?  If it still needs to leave your household, just send it to King so he can rebarrel it in .338 Winchester Magnum for me.

CB, I highly doubt you would want a 7 lb. .338 Win Mag. I bet that would make your shoulder nice and colorful . I do now doubt that it will be leaving my gun rack, except to be cleaned, shot, and brought to hunting camp that is . I also love the look of the WOOD stock. The lines are just sooo perfect. I have a picture of it, but it is with that Redfield scope. I dont know how much shooting i will be able to do with it before hunting season, but most likely i will be using the 150 core-lokts.

Dakota, does BC do anything at close range? There arent shots here past 100 yards, and most are more about 20 or 30. I know that Saddlesore likes those 220 grain round noses, but with a larger bullet, you get more recoil . I dont want to push my luck here. If i even stepped it up to 180's i would be walking on fairly thin ice. I will try out some 165's if i can get them, but most likely i will be using 150's.

w/ the low velocity of the 30-06 and the ranges you are shooting/hunting, it (bc) is of no concern.

in higher velocity cartridges, bullet selection becomes critical, but for the 30-06 and its sub-3000 f/s, it is not as critical. i have no experience w/ any factory ammo on game except for hornady (custom and light mag), and federal classics. so... i'll withhold opinion on the core-lokts, psp's, etc. federal classics, though, are loaded way down. at least the testing in a few 7 rem mags i did seemed to indicate it was.

Hey Rollingb, you cant really call it a whiz-banger, because the cartridge is 99 years old . I asked for one of them Shiloh Sharps Business rifles in .45-120 for high school graduation though . Those things are just sooo pretty. The cartridge can even take down buffs at long range . That should prove suitable for all western hunting, wouldnt you say? Partnered with my .30-06 of course
